Who thinks music televison companies such as MTV and and VH1 are ruining the music world as we know it?

MTV doesnt play music except for about 30 minutes every morning. Its all reality shows. And it was MTV and that ruined rock in the first place.

Yeah it controls music but what the hell, the industry will do that anyway. As for its non music stuff, its weird but some of it is good.

Some channels are useful for finding out what new music is out and whether its any good. MTV goes against its name though by having no music

mtv ruined the music world last century for god's sake

I think the music industry ruined itself when it decided that 'Profit > All', and began to churn out 'superstars' and 70's songs with the words changed in one or two places.

Oh, you mean kinda like Swing was corrupting all our young people? Or Jazz? Or the Twist? Or Elvis? Or ( going even further back ) the Waltz?

There's always something that's going to "destroy the moral fiber of our Nation!" So far, other than drugs and outright promiscuity, I don't see anything in either the various media, or in the music that's could ruin either the US or the world. :)

All MTV plays anymore is rap, poser-punk, and poser-metal.

Previous posters are right-I havent seen a music video in a long time.

Now its just bitching, pimply malcontents in "real world" bullshit shows.
And the commercials for teh products that keep them really sluggish and stupid.

And dont forget "BAM" Margera. Showing kids how they too can make a promising career by being dicks. I really want to smack that punk.

The problem with MTV and the music industry is that it has eliminated the creativity of the artist and instead molds musicians to a certain formula and throws it out to the public. I don't think the industry itself is to blame, but rather the consumers, because I think it is even more pathetic that people buy most of this modern crap, than the music industry that tries to sell it.

This is definitely a modern problem. As a rock fan, I look back to the musicians of the 60s and 70s and see a wide variety of styles and creativity. Case in point: One of my favorite bands, Rush, made 20 min epic, un-radio friendly, songs because they WANTED to, not because others told them to.

MTV and VH1 have never and will never do anything to "ruin" any genre of music. They're both businesses, and businesses stay in business one way: by doing what the largest majority of their customers/target demographics want.

MTV plays what's popular, not what's necessarily good. Since the majority of their audience likes a very specific kind of sound (e.g. pop punk, bling rap, club hip hop, and these days "indie" as well), they're going to continue to play that stuff, especially since the major labels will go out of their way to feed them more of it.

The people who think MTV has "ruined" music tend to be the music elitists, and the people who want to be different for different's sake. I fail to see how anything MTV or VH1 does influences what music you can listen to. Does it make it harder for you to find music you like? Not at all - it's amazingly easy to expose yourself to music that isn't "mainstream," through radio, various publications and word of mouth. The internet makes it stupidly easy to both discover and support the artists you like. It's even still easy to find great music videos: Gondry/Jonze DVDs, anyone?

Just ignore the music you don't like. And if that means ignoring MTV, well, that's a pretty easy task.

It's not ruining the world, but it's sure not increasing the value of it.

And MTV did not ruin rock, Kurt Cobain did.

I liked Johnny Knoxville too. But one can tire of the jackass stunts after a while.

Yes- Don Vito face-sitting on Bam and all his cling-ons one at a time (after a heavy meal with lots of Olestra) till they suffocated would be pretty entertaining.

True, but MTV2 does, and quite often at that. MTV actually does, too, but it's typically only in conjunction with some crappy show.

But like I said, when have either of these channels ever been about good music, even when they did play it?

Well I checked the TV schedule for MTV for today and found out that between 12am to 9am was the primary time that music videos were shown. Except for TRL *gag* everything was complete reality crap like "Date My Mom" "Real World/Road Rules Super Delux Inferno Challenge II!!!!"

I have a real problem with the newer 'top 10' lists. The Country Top 10 was a stretch. But now we have an 'Urban Top 10'. WHat the hell is that, besides a vehicle for rap, hiphop and 'r&b' nobodies to appear to be somebody by giving them their own top ten list?

Note how r&b is in quotation marks. that's because r&b isn't R&B anymore. R&B used to stand for 'Rhythm and Blues'. It doesn't anymore. There's no more B in R&B. Modern r&b is nothing more than cookie-cutter pop dance music. It's R. That's all. They should stop calling it r&b and just call it R. :p

And someone needs to destroy American Idol, and everyone and everything that has come into direct physical contact with it. Before it continues to infect modern music. I target most of my venom at the Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard(America's Idol is a big fat talentless fuck?!?) and Clay Aiken. I hate Clay Aiken. I want Clay Aiken to be the meat in a bus crash sandwich. We must destroy them all while we still can.

I miss those days in junior high 15ish years ago when i could sit down after a hard day at school, with a few pals, and watch videos on MTV... while drinking kool-aid and eating a (cooked) frozen pizza or two.

lol

now i find their programming ridiculous, and not even the content itself (necessarily)... rather, because their programming includes a total ABSENCE of MUSIC VIDEOS. lmao!

MTV should go back to its roots, imo.

The mainstream music industry is as ugly as the ripple on a slop bucket. Most of you will appreciate this article, especially if you make music or have friends that do: Major Labels: Some of Your Friends Are Already This Fucked - by Steve Albini (http://www.arancidamoeba.com/mrr/problemwithmusic.html) <---- indie music god, and a brilliant sound engineer/producer (less is more!)

My name is The Downmarching Void, and I'm a RealTV Addict. It started off innocently enough, I just peeped them now and again to make fun of them. But now I'm hooked....

I dunno, its a guilty pleasure. I hate all other RealityTV shows, but seeing some geezer wipe out on a boogy board at 50mph, or watching a stupid tourist get chased by bears is somehow very amusing to me...

MTV makes me want to go for a ride with a van full crack babies. It is slightly better than root canal however, and much less fun than a migraine headache. The ironic thing is that music videos themselves have the potential to add more depth and meaning (or just more fun) to a bands music, but most just use them to sell image. The best music videos get banned anyway. ie: Skinny Puppy's Testure video, Leftfield's Afrikashocks video. and dozens more.

MTV is now the voice of the Crackhead Nation.

Yeah, but those networks are crap to begin with *cough*UPN*cough* and even those channels that did try and dip their hand in the reality show jar (like Sci Fi and that rediculas "house of freaks" show) saw the light and let go. MTV was all about music videos, and now 2/3 of its programming is crap like "Made". Here's a hint, I don't give a f*ck if you want to be a prom queen or you're having your sweet sixteen birthday, give me f*cking music!!!!

What I find so weird is that it looks like you have real music on MTV.Where I live we have 3 music station on the TV (cable 40 channels, which about 27 are usable). We have MTV : 24 hour of room raiders and drugged up losers stappling each others private parts together(And about the same crap), TMF: Dutch MTV, was all music with some BS, but MTV bought and now it's more BS and little crappy music. The BOX : was a channel where you could text a desired clip you wanted to see and after 3 to 6 minutes it was on. Now MTV bought it and ruined that as well.

So be glad you get to see/hear music, because where I live it's all crap. When I was younger it was way more music and the Bullshit began at 8 till 11 (so you could avoid it). MTV fucked up and no I'm not starting to listen to radio, because that was fucked up ages ago.

Try Non-Commercial Radio. Most Universities in the western world have a radio staion. I find it hard to beleive the Netherlands wouldn't have a least a few. Failing that, try finding webcasts from non-commercial radio stations from around the world. WFNU, the University of New York Radio Staion is AWESOME. All kinds of stuff that will never see the light of day on Commercial Radio gets played...without commercials (gee, thats refreshing, isn't it?) There is amazing music all around you. Seek and ye shall find.

Just out of curiosity, how would you know about the shows if you don't watch it. I dont know about anyone else but I mean if I wanted to listen to music I would just turn on the radio. I mean yeah, it is nice to see a music video every once in a while but there is this thing called yahoo music that actually (can you believe it?) lets you watch the videos you want. Just sign up with an account. Its free. It really is. Ok, I absolutely hate reality TV so you know what I do, I find the remote and I CHANGE IT. Wow, is it really that hard. Why are you insulting something you don't even have to watch in the first place. If you don't like something change it. Don't just sit there and complain. I'm sure there are zillions of other ways you can find "untainted" music videos, you don't have to turn to MTV if you know it doesn't play them... I don't know, just a thought.
