Recently, it has occurred to me that a lot of the supposed Liberal vs Conservative strife is actually North vs South/MidWest and Urban vs Rural. If you look at the recent electorate it's pretty clear that Americans are politically divided state-wise by region and county-wise by population density.
Also a lot of issues that appear to be based on ideology, when you think about it, are really based on life style. Like for gun ownership, it's fine for people living out in the country to have guns, but it becomes a problem when people get scrunched together into big cities. Excuse the pun but you can't be as liberal with gun usage when there are other people packed around you.
A lot of people seem to form ideologies around these things though, which turns our differences into problems. If people just acknowledged that different places required different practices and lifestyles then it would do much to alleviate the hard feelings. ie if you're a floridian don't argue about house construction with a californian, because your house needs to be hurricane resistant while theirs needs to be earthquake resistant.
So... how much do you think the various factors play into the political divisions in the US?
(btw I think EU might be experiencing the same problems right now)
