Seriously, why the hate? I've seen too many instances of the word "hippies" directly followed by :sniper:

I just don't like that they demean their arguments by the way they act.
It's like they are living strawman arguments.

Hippies commonly are grouped with pot-smoking, sloth(as in, too lazy for haircut), sexual promiscuity, reckless spreading of the AIDS virus, bad acoustic guitar music, dirty and torn clothes, overall dirtiness, ugly tye-dye shirts, clogging sidewalks and streets because they have no job, draft dodging, America hating, and communism.

Well I don't know much about Hippie Culture, but generally they are for peace, for press freedom and so on, right?
Well, if they turn up with long hair, beads all over themselves, wearing strange clothes and smelling like Pot, no one can possibly be compelled to take them seriously. And it enables detractors of their arguments to classify all people who want peace and so on as hippies, making it that much harder to argue for that.

Well I don't smoke pot and I don't wear beads/strange clothing, but that's because I have absolutely no motivation to think about clothing, so I end up wearing really boring stuff (different combinations of non-descript jeans and t-shirts).

I think those who despise hippies are jelous of their unrelenting pursuit of happiness.

I have to agree with this statement. Although I do know that the term "Hippie" was coined by the beatnicks, as a sign of contempt for intellectual posers who were really only interested in drugs and sex.

I think that may have been true in the early seventies, when the media took hold of the culture for profit with crap like laugh-in and bell-bottom pants, but most hippies now don't wear much blatant "hippie" attire besides sandals or a GD shirt or something.

Hey man, calm down. I think "punks" are a little full of themselves and their badassedness. Moreover, if you want to talk about hypocrisy and poserness, punks obviously need a bit cleaning up. Half of punks are practically apolitical, and just think "kickin' shit" is cool. And the less said of punk music the better...

Hippies are just people to me. I wouldn't treat them any different.

I just dislike their lifestyle. I'm also a fiercly patriotic American, so I generally don't like it when a bunch of long-haired people that smell like pot throw rocks at people who just want to live a peaceful life. I mean, hippies said that they are peacefull, but running around throwing rocks at random people wasn't the way to achieve it.

I'm all for the persuit of happiness and peace, but there are better ways to do it. Take Buddhism, for example. A nice, peaceful, friendly way to find your inner self, find happiness, and find peace. No pot and rock-throwing required.

Hippies deserve nothing less than death. They are parasites, leech off every working man and woman so they can complain about the world and do nothing.

They're not poor where I'm from. I can only speak from my own experiences with them. This thread isn't about punkers... But you're dead on. That's why the punkers are busy beating up eachother all the time. Besides, no punkers ever pretended to be hippie saviours.

I break hippies down into two subgroups: Dirty Hippies and Dirty Fuckin Hippies.

Dirty Hippies (they're all dirty) are great. They're creative, imaginative and know there is more to life than getting high and drum circles. They have the inclination and ability to get jobs, and generally make awesome neighbours and friends.

Dirty Fuckin Hippies are the space cadet variety who collect welfare, smoke vast amounts of weeds, have WAY too many drum circles and are generally not firing on all cylinders.

Fortunately, most Hippies are just Dirty, but its the Dirty Fuckin Hippies that get noticed the most, despite being only 20% or so of the local Hippy population whereever you go. Except for places like Goa, Ibiza,etc. There they are to rule rather than the exception.

Given a choice between having a Dirty Hippy or a Middle-Management Type for a neighbour/roomat/friend, I'll choose the Dirty Hippy.

Given a choice between a Commune of Dirty Fuckin Hippies and a Frat for neighbours, I'll take the Frat. There very few things worse than having a Frat for neighbours, and Dirty Fuckin Hippies are at the top of that list.
