if i know the word, generally its easy (well duh). i'm dyslexic (had the tests done and all) but have had lots of "phonics" lessons in how to write & spell in the past, so if i know how a word is supposed to sound, no problems... most of the time (i mean, everyone has a few problem words!)

edit: i don't use capitals or proper punctuation just because i'm damn lazy :D

I was just going to say "Not if you're dyslexic!" :)

Dyslexia aside, spelling is easy.

spelling is easy if you have been taught systematic spelling. if you have been taught by the "take a guess" method, spelling correctly is a nightmare.

Or just remember words when you read them.

Spelling pretty much comes naturally to me. I generally rely on what looks right to me, and, being an avid reader, there are few words I've never seen.

I think spelling tends to be easy for anyone who's grown up reading. Unfortunately, an awful lot of people think reading is something you only do when someone forces you to...

Spelling has never really been a problem for me. It's just so basic.

I'll go with what alot of people are saying and say that spelling is easy if you read. It helps build up a bank of words that you know how to spell. However if someone gives you a word that isn't phonetically accurate that you haven't seen before, then it gets difficult. Like onomatopoeia. And unlike deoxyribonucleic acid!

Unless you don't know the proper spelling.

Well, I read quiet frequently and spelling is extremely difficult for me. I don’t have trouble sounding words I haven’t seen before, its just actually writing letters based on those sounds that is hard. Seriously, everything I post on this forum I type in word first and copy paste to this.

Not intending to be rude, but is it possible that you have some sort of dyslexia? Though if you read well, maybe not... I don't know much about those sort of things.

Spelling can be quite difficult, especially if you have words that sound nothing like how they are spelled. Examples include "bologna," "colonel" (I still mispronounce this one), etc.

Oh and if you're going to bring up "colonel" we may as well throw in "sergeant" too.

And one of the pronunciations of "lieutenant". Which I probably spelled wrong.

Actually, with that word, if they can remember how to say it and that is starts with pneu- it's pretty simplistic.

Edit: Sorry for making that serious. :(

I don't find spelling that easy, though for me it comes a lot easier than typing. I do tend to spell pretty well, but only if I see the word. I suck at spelling out loud. And I frequently make spelling errors, but since I read a lot I usually pick up that it doesn't look right. Plus I tend to keep a window with Mirriam-Websters site open when I'm on the forum.
People may notice when I post without looking at it first I make quite a few more errors.

its possible as it can manifest itself in many different ways (different varieties)

anyway, my most hated words:
available - thought it was "avaidable" for years :headbang:
beginning - always have to check the "n"s and "g"s in that...
sovereign - damn that word (and damn sovereignty)

there are many more... i'll probably end up making a big-ass list before the day is through :p

I find spelling "correctly" very easy, but that doesn't mean I give a shit when other people don't. As long as I know what they're saying it doesn't bother me if they find it easier to write their language in a less than accepted way; it's not my place to tell another human being how I think they should communicate.

Spelling is easy. The only reason I make spelling mistakes is that I'm too damn lazy to check the dictionary within arms reach of me. I used to find it very easy and not need a dictionary much, but then I started going on Internet Forums, and getting confused by all the mis-spellings of various wrods (and widespread spontaneous invention of hitherto non-existent ones). I also did WAY too much drugs for a 6 year period. That never helps.

Anyone with at least a 3rd grade education should be able to spell properly.
Provided it is - Their native tongue, and - said tongue actually has a written language.
Unless they have an obvious, glaring mental defect.

So true. I also mix languages every now and then. It's hard to remember e.g. the name of a country in particular language. Kirgisia/Kirgistan/Kyrgystan/Kyrgyzia

You forgot that said written language should
a. have rules
b. not be iconographic etc ;)

Or antidisestablishmentarianism or floccinaucinihilipilification...

But long, uncommon words aside, spelling's not that bad - some people act as if it's a rare skill that only a few are gifted with.

Word is bad for your health. It misses typos that end as other words - such as quiet instead of quite - and takes a few minutes to notice most grammatical misspellings - such as it's instead of its. The first step to learning to "write like you're white" is weaning yourself off of writing programs.

PS: That was just a joke... it was not meant to be offensive, it was meant to be funny - most white people can't write any better than anyone else. It's sarcasm. Please don't get mad at me.

My spelling is progressively getting worse, but I have a feeling that it's due to learning new languages and having to spell those words correctly. Although, my Latin-base words get spelled correctly now...

However, in the case of someone who English is a second language, I could easily see how they'd fail to spell much of the language incorrectly (especially with some of the strange vowel rules we have... freakin' French...).
