How good is it to criticize the Iranian elections and "push" for elections in Egypt... if at the same time, the US official stance towards friendly regimes in Saudi Arabia it's "let's talk about it later" and towards buddy Karimov in Uzbekistan it's "let's close our eyes".

The US has been saying things about Egyptian elections for years, and nothing even happens there. This is a farce. These speaches are pretty empty, and as usual, the only relevant content is criticism and thinly veiled threats to other countries in the Middle East.

You guys are being so NOT fair! :(

What’s a poor secretary of State to do? I’m quite impressed. I can’t find a complete speech printout, but I found these snippets on Yahoo News… :D

"Democracy does not guarantee that people will not do bad things," she said at a press conference before her speech.

"We believe any reform will expose the fact that there are universal values and freedoms that people aspire to," Rice said, with the foreign minister of dynastic Saudi Arabia at her side. "We believe the people of the Middle East, we believe the people of Saudi Arabia, are no different in that regard."

"Throughout the Middle East, the fear of free choices can no longer justify the denial of liberty," Rice said at Cairo's American University. "It is time to abandon the excuses that are made to avoid the hard work of democracy."

"For 60 years, my country, the United States, pursued stability at the expense of democracy in this region, here in the Middle East, and we achieved neither," she said. "Now, we are taking a different course. We are supporting the democratic aspiration of all people." (this is the one that we should notice, if it's true, it's a move we will see :D )

She called Syria a "police state" that has acted as a foreign master in neighboring Lebanon. On Iran, she said, "The appearance of elections does not mask the organized cruelty of Iran's theocratic state."

"President Mubarak has unlocked the door for change. Now, the Egyptian government must put its faith in its own people," she said. "The Egyptian government must fulfill the promise it has made to its people and to the entire world by giving its citizens the freedom to choose."

"The day must come when the rule of law replaces emergency decrees," she said.

Rice drew no applause during the university address. :(

One protester who demonstrated during Rice's appearance said the United States is not serious about democracy.

But overall I was surprised to have been surprised :D

WHAT?! Well its true!

not neccessarily talking about the current US govt- look at Teddy Roosevelt and South America for instance (that era at least).
As for the Iran thing, it was seen as an attack on them- a knee jerk reaction results in a hardliner gaining a massive and unprecedented jump in support.

Nothing personal.

I watched Chappelle's show just then, and it looks like Condi and Colin have been picked by the White Team in the Racial Draft (actually Condi was given away).

Condi is a remarkable public speaker. At some function or other she was giving a peech about Iraq and some protesters came into the room in black hoods to represent the victims at that prison in Iraq (I temporarily seem to have forgotten the name). Anyway, as they are being quietly escorted out of the room Rice says something like (paraphrasing) “Isn’t it great that we have freedom of speech and those people can express their views like that, and now the people of Iraq have the same freedom.”

But...... if they were being allowed to express free speech, then they wouldn't have been removed....

Not wierd in the least. Go to Syria or Cuba or even (sadly) Russia and try that.

Removing them as a disruption is different than putting them up against the wall.

“Isn’t it great that we have freedom of speech and those people can express their views like that, and now the people of Iraq have the same freedom.”
That's not great public speaking. That's what politicians always use when people with conscience try to point out mistakes. Like that somehow cancels out the concerns these protesters have, and it makes it unnecessary to engage them.

Idea: Condi should pledge full support to the hard-liners, praise the conservatives' familial values and make a vibrant call to Iranians so they vote massively against the reformers.

Possible result: Iranians will vote massivly for the reformers, for spite.

:D

They got it all wrong! All wrong! Reverse psychology is the answer!!!! Gaaaah...
