Churches cancel Sunday services so members can search for missing boy.

Churches in and around the Sounting camp where an eleven year old boy is missing cancelled Sunday services yesterday so their members could aid in the search for the boy.
Now that is putting your action where your religion says it should be. Kudos!

Frankly, as much as some might want to praise the churches for this, I'm sitting here thinking "What? You mean that there are people would have woke up and said: 'Sure, I'd love to help find the missing boy.... but it's church day I'm afraid.....and God would damn me to hell if I didn't sit on my ass through one more boring sermon. Good luck with the kid thing though... we'll be there AFTER we're done praying for divine help rather than giving actual help.'"?!
Fortunately though, I would imagine that this might have been partly a way to suck up some PR brownie points while bowing to the inevitable as the pastor received call after call of "Sorry, won't be making it tomorrow morning...".
At least I HOPE that's what they were getting!

Which reminds me, while on the road hoem from florida there was a sign that read "go to church or the devil will get you" and the boy was lost in UTAH, I think mormonism is the official religion, these people would've been like "screw him, i gotta save my soul today"

Actually, knowing what the people are like in that part of the Country, it wouldn't surprise me if a number of the churches' members had suggested it first.

Yah. One of the few things about Mormonisim that I Grok is their pragmatisim. God helps those who Hep Themselves. Thus the emphasis on stockpiling food for lean times, etc.
I hope they find the kid.

I spent age 8 to 14 growing up in that area (before Park City was a trendy location).
At this time of year, the water is still icy cold, and the nights aren't too warm, either, at that altitude.
People get lost up there all the time. Most of the people in the area appear to have turned out to help. It's a heavily Mormon area, and they all look out for each other (something that some of the cynics on this forum are probably jealous of - no one appears to be looking out for them).
Say what you will about Mormons (and I have because I'm not one), they do stick together in times of crisis. That's something that a lost boy and his family need.

Which rather dovetails nicely with my point that the churches seem to be trying to suck up some credit for doing what every rational person would do anyway, which comes across as rather self-serving.....
I mean, I'm not trying to denigrate them for it, but frankly I think it should only have been newsworthy had a church and it's members decided that praying WAS more important than getting out there and helping thy neighbours.

so they can't do anything right, can they? If they had waited 'till church was over, you'd be calling for their blood and making all kinds of oh-so-witty comments (sarcasm) about why you are so superior to everybody that believes in a religion. They cancel church, and you still find a way to critisize. You don't know their motives.
And most people would just go "o, how terrible!" and go back to eating their dinner. They helped.
Get off their backs, you don't know them.
What a mistake. Now more children will go missing, just so people can get out of church. Way to screw things up, guys.
I wonder what really did happen to that poor kid, if he got lost, hurt, died, or kidnapped? It is really sad.

Yup. I'm no fan of the Mormons. Frankly, they're one of the few religious groups who frighten me. In this case, however, they deserve nothing but praise. They're truly following the implications of "to the least of these." For that they deserve commendation, not condemnation.
