I just recently saw The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galxy and absolutley loved it, but i have not read any of the books yet (I plan to though). For those of you wonderful people who have read the books then saw the movie, do you think that seeing the movie version first will ruin the literary experiance for me?
Thank you! ^^

....you just got so into the negative points for NOT having read HHGTTG, that no matter how cool you are, even if you personally render unto me a personal starship capable of flitting across the galaxy in the week, as well as giving me a harem full of foxmen and catgirls, you will STILL be in the negative.
...but you'd be close to 0 ^^;
Read the books. The movie was about 80% correct, and remeber, if it comes down to a conflict between book and movie, book wins. No questions, ifs, ands, ors, or buts.

Now can I be cool? =P
Anyway, I was definatley planning to read the books in the near future (right now they're all checked out at my local library).

....library? BUY THE SUCKERS.
Its worth it. I read HHGTTG so much that the binding fell apart.
But only read up to So Long And Thanks For All The Fish, because Mostly Harmless sucks.
At the very least, take three hours, sit down int he bookstore, and read it there.
And no, still not cool.

Buy them all and read them all, they're all great, Douglas Adams was a genius. I'm not sure if I want to see the film, having read the books, heard the radio version and seen the TV series, but I guess I'll have to

The film broke the book in a few places, certainly the book has ownage on the film but the film will not ruin it as long as you don't expect the stories to correlate on all but the most basic facts (and sometimes not there).

Each incarnation of the Hitchhiker story has been demonstrably different from its predecessors. First, it was a BBC Radio series (which eventually became available on cassette in the early 90s -- good luck finding it now), then came the books. Following the books were the books on tape, then the BBC TV series (the weakest of the entire H2G2 oeuvre, IMHO). Further stories in book form were next (So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish and the short story "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe" and finally the capstone, Mostly Harmless).
Point is, Douglas Adams always meant for every re-telling of the story to be different from the last, regardless of medium. Having seen the movie, I'm just glad that it was finally finished and released. The question of how "faithful" it is to the books is largely irrelevant -- the film was made to stand on its own. True, there are some things in the film that look like they were concepts or dialogue agreed upon by committee after Adams' untimely death, but the new aspects of the film that are clearly Adams' ideas are just as brilliant and funny as anything he's ever done (the idea-nixing flyswatters on Vogsphere MUST have been an Adams original).
So read the books and decide for yourself. You can't go wrong with source material in this kind of debate.

Actually, reading the book first tends to ruin the Movie Version. Every Book that has been turned into a movie had to have stuff edited out. so many a book fan finds some disappointment in the movie.
so go ahead, read the book and find out what they changed in the movie.

from what I hear the movie crams all the books into it, I myself have read the books and not seen the movie, so just read the books and compare them to the movie.

ERrrr... They were different but both strange in teh same way...
Trillion is a billion times better in the book... and there's no real sappy love story aspect...
The book is great, I haven't seen the movie though...
but the book is definitely worth reading.

The movie deviated quite a bit, I think you'll be fine seeing the movie first and then reading the books.
But read them now.

It does include a decent portion of the book, but it won't ruin it. The movie was rather good, but I still prefer the book, and wished Adams had included everything from it, though I do understand why he didn't.
If you've not started, you need to begin with the book, immediately. Right now. No excuses! Go, man, go! What're you doing still reading this? I told you to read that book!

The Hitchhiker's books are far too good for anything to be capable of ruining them. Buy them. Read them. Love them. :D

what Poliwanacraca said
the joy of hitchhikers isnt in the PLOT. the plot is fairly stupid (as befits a comedy) the fun is in the writing and the jokes
i recommend reading it outloud. read it to your dad in the car or your mom while she is making dinner (or vice versa eh?) its even more funny when you share it with someone else.
