What is the greatest movie ever?
Ok, I've gotten a list of what my friends and I consider to be the greatest movies ever. I don't have any foreign films because I don't know too many. Give your thoughts please. Poll coming soon.
The Noble Men

The Shawshank Redemption.
EDIT: Also, Oldboy was a brilliant foriegn film. Except from the tongue scene.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Not because of the music! but its brilliant mixture of reality and its very own kind of 'fantasy'!
ooh. it's tough. i'm stuck between "monty python and the Holy grail" and "kung-pow"
Evilness and Chaos

Metropolis, 1927, Director: Fritz Lang.
The Noble Men

I don't think the poll was such a great idea, as there are too many films to pick out 9 of them (plus the "other" section).

My favourite film is Dancer in the Dark by Lars von Trier.

i picked return of the king
not because its the greatest movie ever but because the lord of the rings trilogy is an amazing cinematic feat. in terms of bringing an impossible book to the screen and also in terms of special effects and continuity through the 3 films.

Most assuredly, it's The Godfather. I have never been more emotionally affected by a movie than by that one. I think it's so powerful not just in the story that it tells, but in the way it tells it. The cast just seemed to mesh with each other so effectively to, it was an incredible piece of directing, and it was backed up with solid writing as well. Although you could probably find many movies better than the Godfather in a single area, ones with better writing, better lead actors, or better directing, I don't think you'll find a better all around movie.
On a side note, why do you have Star Wars up there? General nerd consensus is that The Empire Strikes Back is the best movie out of the six.

Your right Holy Grail has got to be one of the best if not the best movie ever. I have never seen kung-pow but my friend (who has a very similair sense of humor) says it is hilarious and is one of his favorite movies.
The Motor City Madmen
19-06-2005, 22:21
The original 'Dawn of the Dead'.
Die hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh and the 1979, 1983, 1987 and 1992 general election footage, but not the 1997 one, or any after the 1997 one.
The Motor City Madmen
19-06-2005, 22:42
Also, "Deep Throat"
"Pootie-Tang"
"Tron"
"The Sidehackers"
"MONSTER A-GO-GO"
"Mitchell"
"Red Zone Cuba"
The Capitalist Vikings

Star Wars isn't a movie.
You're right! It's fact.
IMO, best movie by far is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Pure genius.

No, it's a set of two trilogies. There is no movie called Star Wars.

Star Wars isn't a movie.
DAMN what was that movie i went to see in 1977. it was star SOMETHING and i know it wasnt star TREK.
WTF did they call that thing??? it was nominated for best picture oscar and everything.
all of the listed films are great movies, but the Greatest movies are the "First" movies.
the First Moving Pictures opened the doors to a whole new era of entertainment.
the First Talking Pictures added sound and expanded the use of Movies.
they may not meet todays standards, but without them, we wouldn't have "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings."
The Great Sixth Reich

The Spy Who Loved Me (Yes, the James Bond movie)
DAMN what was that movie i went to see in 1977. it was star SOMETHING and i know it wasnt star TREK.
WTF did they call that thing??? it was nominated for best picture oscar and everything.Be kind... For a whole Generation, Star Wars was first seen on Cable, thus they don't realize it was first shown on the Silver Screen.
Star Wars isn't a movie.Yes it is. the movie titles are. (in the order it was released)
Star Wars
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.
If you're thinking that it's "Star Wars: A New Hope", you're wrong. it was advertised and billed simply as Star Wars.

I don't know what is the greatest movie... I guess it's very personal.
If I had to name only one, it would be:
"MOUNTAINS ON THE MOON" (1990)
An epic movie about the long and painful expedition of Speke & Burton looking for the sources of the Nile river. There's a lot of battle scenes, strange encounters with savage tribes, lots of health problems (rotting feet, bugs in the ears, and a javelin through the mouth), and betrayal. Beautiful and violent at the same time.
Also... I can tell what is the most disturbing movie, EVER.
"JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN" (1971)
I still get nightmares about that wounded soldier rotting in a windowless hospital chamber.
Magnetic Island

All of those movies aren't that brilliant. Has anyone seen SAW? I love that movie. Although it isn't the best.

I took it to mean the 6 Star Wars movies in general, since it's all one huge story. Same with The Godfather (I haven't seen them, but I've heard it's a trilogy).
Hmm, toss up between: The Right Stuff
Empire of the Sun.

Since nobody else has mentioned it, I will:
There is no movie called "Star Wars". The one we saw in 1977 was called "Star Wars: A New Hope". Hence, it would be "A New Hope".
I'd have to say that my favorite movie is Life Is Beautiful, the only foreign film to win the Best Picture Acadamy Award.

Actually Episode 4: 'A New Hope' was originally billed sinmply as "Star Wars" as George Lucas hadn't a clue of where he'd get the money to make the others. Refering to 'A New Hope' as Star Wars isn't inaccurate.

Specifically I'm wondering why Star Wars, which I am taking as a reference to Ep 4, as opposed to Empire Strikes Back, which is widely considered the best movie out of either trilogy.
I took it to mean the 6 Star Wars movies in general, since it's all one huge story. Same with The Godfather (I haven't seen them, but I've heard it's a trilogy).
THANK YOU! I make just one generalization....

Schindler's List comes close, but I have to go with a few older films like Casablanca, War and Peace, The Longest Day, Dr. Zhivago, and a few new ones like We Were Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan, etc. ... but you see where this is going. :)

Blade Runner

Although it isn't my favorite movie, one glaring omission from that list is "Casablanca."
And "Plan Nine From Outer Space." :p
My bad. I really should have remembered Casablanca. That would probably replace "Psycho" up there.
Robot ninja pirates
20-06-2005, 03:40
I could never pick the best movie ever. Even from the ones on the poll, I can't decide between Shining, Return of the Kind, and Godfather.
That is, unless Duck Soup is what I think it is. I seem to remember that is a Marx Brothers Movie (nobody knows them anymore). If it is I'm voting that, not because that's the greatest movie of all time, but because those guys put out great movies with regularity.
Dragons Bay
20-06-2005, 03:55
All the natural disaster movies, like The Day After Tomorrow...
The Smiths wasn't that bad...
Schindler's List was a pretty good movie, but here are the 3 best movies I've seen:
Gladiator
Last Samurai
The Boondock Saints
Happy Gilmore is also a very entertaining film, heheh
Republic of Freedonia

Actually, its incorrect. It might have been marketted as "Star Wars" but the film itself was called Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Check the story roll at the start of the film, or, for that matter the side of the DVD/Video box :)

Probably Monty Python's the Holy Grail, or The Life of Brian, or any other Monty Python production.

2) Best Horror/Weird/Gore/B- Movie
3) Best Western/Cowboy/Drama Movie
4) Best War/Historical/Epic Movie
5) Best Comedy/Funny/Romantic/Musical Movie
6) Best Hero/Superhero/Combat/Kung-Fu/Ninja Movie

no just NO
if it was called star wars episode iv a new hope that is how it would have been referrred to in say.... the oscar nomination or...the original movie poster.
it was put out by the studio as STAR WARS and nothing else. what lucas may have decided to call it later is his business i guess.
after all one CANT look at the original dvd or video box as those were issued long after the movie came out.

Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy. Although in my opinion the books were better, it's still the best movie out there.
How can you even compare that to the movies that these other guys have said?

Well, all I watch are comedies and (occasionally) war movies, but here's a list of some great ones in no particular order:
Bad Santa (seen 7 times)
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (seen 11 or 12 times)
Not Another Teen Movie (seen 3 times)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (seen 4 times)
Monty Python: The Meaning of Life (seen 1 time)
Monty Python's And Now for Something Completely Different (seen 2 times)
Eurotrip (seen 6 times)
Duck Soup (seen 1 time)
Team America: World Police (seen 7 times)
Full Metal Jacket (seen 2 times)
Shawn of the Dead (seen 2 times)
The Longest Yard (the new one; may be removed, seen 1 time)
Mallrats (seen 1 time)
Dogma (lost count)
Office Space (lost count)
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (seen 1 time)
I'm having a mental block and can't think of any more at the moment, but there are many, many more. Will update.

Mr Smith Goes To Washington is pretty great. And damn you STar Wars nerds for hijacking every thread!! Get over it, the first film was just called Star Wars on release, as per the original posters, predating your precious DVD release. Once you're over the shock, get some films that actually might be considered among the best ever and watch those, too. Damn Star Wars nerds.
And The Exorcist? Seriously? Oh well....
Actually, its incorrect. It might have been marketted as "Star Wars" but the film itself was called Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Check the story roll at the start of the film, or, for that matter the side of the DVD/Video box :)On the original VHS tapes it's STAR WARS no New Hope, Also on the LASERDISKS it's "Star Wars", can you name anything that is advertised and promoted by a different name than the product? Sure the Film Scroll it says New hope. but even film archives has it listed as Star Wars. later boxes may have "A New Hope" tacked on there, but that is because of Episodes I, II, III. Episodes IV, V, and VI were added to keep it symetrical.
Internet Movie DataBase. (http://imdb.com/find?q=Star%20wars;s=all)
All Movie Guide (http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll)
Movie Review Query Engine (http://www.mrqe.com/lookup?star+wars)
Note: most of them list STAR WARS: EPISODE IV - A NEW HOPE as aka
but the name it's most known for, billed as, Advertised as, is Star Wars. The others were also Billed as, Advertised as, and Archived as, "Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back / Return of the Jedi " and the first three Episodes includes "Episode I / Episode II / Episode III"
Umm, the poll sucks, as there's not a single non-American or Non-English film in it.
I nominate "Le Grand Bleu" as one of the best.
I did say I didn't know any foreign films...

Most of the movies on that list are garbage. I mean, The Shining?! come on. I have many movies I would consider my favorite. But Im not gonna list them here, so Ill just mention one of the more recent ones to make my favorites list.
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
Despite its graphic violence, it isnt the typical Hollywood glorified violence, it is a more realistic, darker kind of violence that serves to punctuate the realities of life in the world's worst ghetto and the horrors the main character struggles to rise above and escape from.
what about Boondock Saints... or Equilibrium...
and if anyone hasnt seen those two, you definitely should.

Hmm, no Dr. Strangelove has been mentioned too bad.
However just a quick list of some of the best i've seen(as, I can't pick one over the other)
Citizen Kane
Dr. Strangelove
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Requiem for a Dream
12 Angry Men
Once Upon a time in the West
The Matrix
American History X
The Manchurian Candidate(1962 version)
OK, the ones (non-foreign) that I really should have put in there were:
Dr. Strangelove
Casablanca
The Manchurian Candidate
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Mr. Smith goes to Washington
