I just watched Paranoia Agent on Adult Swim...that is one wierd show, I cant quite see the point, but it has entertaining moments.
The intro threw me off though, I mean, seriously.

Or is this some refrence to a later part of the series?
and whats with the pink dog doll at the end? Its almost as creepy as the intro O_o

You need to see it from the beginning.

The characters all the end are all victims of Little Slugger in the series, except the doll. The doll is a creation of a character in the show and is alive and talking throughout it, reflecting on that person's sanity. Every person in the show ends up insane in some way or another, and Little Slugger is a reflection of that insanity, as well as often being the cure.

Basically put, it's a show you must watch from the beginning, which you have missed if you are just catching it for the first time tonight.

If you love weirdness, watch FLCL.

If you think about it, it fits. It's supposed to make you go "...Wtf?" It probably has some inner meaning that we've yet to unravel, but I think it has something to do with the fact that the entire show is based on problems of the psyche and, you guessed it, paranoia. Also? Did you see the ending credits? It's about the same--everyone is peacefully sleeping around the giant puppy-beanie-thing.

However, the opening song is pretty sweet. I want the soundtrack. :p

Sadly, I only managed to tape episodes 3-6. So I have no clue what's going on.

I don't know that 1 and 2 would help you...

Best I was able to do was that it was clearly about puberty and budding sexuality-but that much is obvious.

The good thing about FLCL is that its so disjointed that it makes almost no differnce if you watch it all or not.
To switch topics at random...
That kid has some wierd personality problems. He gives birth to a robot from his skull, finds out that his dad is a sexbot from mars, finds out that his sort-of girlfriend is an alien, gets attacked by a giant iron, and is mauled by a bunch of aliens, and still considers everything to be normal and boring.
Wow.

I haven't really gotten into Paranoia Agent or s-CRY-ed yet, unfortunately. I think I am going to have to wait until they come back around so I can catch them from the beginning.

Sexbot from Mars?

That doesn't explain the rotting body in the closet...
DemonLordEnigma

s-CRY-ed isn't actually weird. It's just typically for anime.

As for the dad in FLCL: He isn't a sexbot. The sexbot is a replacement for him for some reason that I don't even want to pretend to remember.

Im not really sure about the Mars part, but the sexbot bit was fairly obvious.

Im not too sure about the body, I think the alien chick (whose name temporarily escapes me) killed him for some reason, by accident or otherwise. Or perhaps it wasnt explained.

Actually, the first 15 minutes of the first Pokemon Movie were REALLY strange. Its like some kind of mushroom or LSD trip, has SFA do do with the flick, and seemed to be there just to fill up space and pad the length of the movie. Not somethin you'd expect in a kiddy film, WTF?

We seem to be confused.
I meant that I think the chick killed his father, the dead guy in the cloest, and that he was somehow replaced with the sexbot.
Im %90 sure the guy in the closet was his dad, because he has the goatee and the glassess and the hair...

Yes, that's all accurate. But the important point is that the kid's father isn't dead. Something the alien did kept him alive in spite of the state of his body. Or am I just confused?

I dont remember any mention of it, I think the robot is just an impersonation.

I do think the sexbot was part of a lesson the alien was trying to teach. But I dare not guess further.

Actually, most anime isn't like this. Only the rarest of shows are this fucked up. If you want a typical example, try InuYasha or Ghost in the Shell. The second one is actually a pretty damned good piece of science fiction. The first doesn't require much mythology to understand, except to know that the only real difference between demons and angels is which side they're on.

Without explaining the rest (except to point out the puberity/sexuality thing)-

As you come into sexual being you begin a tacit understanding that your parents are also sexual beings-it is a transformation of the understanding of adults and your father specificly (for boys). Your base desires are pretty raw and dirty (to you) and if you father is looking at the same ass you are with the same thoughts, it displaces your image of him, in this case making him a martian sexbot.

I never liked InuYasha much, to sappy with the stupid 'Macho guy who is actually soft at heart' stuff.
I did like Outlaw Star though, and Ruroni Kenshin just pwns all, while actually being somewhat historically accurate (well...sort of. Moreso than most 'Feudal Japan' anime...)

If you want a serious show, try some of the pre-90's anime, some of that stuff is just plain scary, usualy it involves demons disembowling entire villages for little or no reason.
It also tends to be better animated than the new stuff :P
DemonLordEnigma
19-06-2005, 09:07
The problem is that InuYasha, while sappy, is pretty accurate in its portrayal of demons when compared with mythology. Not all Japanese demons were evil, in spite of the vast number who were.

Pretty much, InuYasha tries to balance several genres at once, which results in what we see. Quite a few anime shows do this.

While I like Kenshin, InuYasha, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL and the like, I have to say that my absolute favorite is Gundam. I can't get enough of it; 08th MS Team is greatness. Currently I'm looking for Gundam 0080 DVDs, and the last DVD to SEED (I missed the last ep).

Btw can anybody catch the allusion to Gundam in either my sig/avatar?

About Paranoia Agent, as I understand, each of the characters in the show have some sort of problem, the prostitute with the split personality, the perveted corrupt cop, that girl with the doll hallucinations, that psychotic people basher Little Slugger is apparently the "cure" to their problems, how? I don't know.

As for the opening, Everyone there is laughing at you to give you a sense of paranoia. When your laughed at and you don't know why must people feel paranoid and check every little detail of themselves. That's what I think at least....
