One of the worst things to happen to earth imo. What's yours. What is the place humans have?

If humans did not exist on earth, would anything else? Would there even be an earth? Is all this a figment of our imagination?

The place into which we would best fit is that of husbandmen and nurturers of the entire web of life, but we, as a species, have yet to accept that responsibility.

The only difference between us and other animals, is that we posess the knowledge we're going to die, and opposable thumbs.

With self awareness comes lots of crap like the ego, and materialism.

If we weren't here, the earth would stand half a chance.

Why is it that we are singled out, from all the natural disasters and events that have happened and will happen to this ball of molten rock as being the worst possible thing to have happened.

We are not.

There have been many events that have wiped out 90% plus of life on the planet. This appears to happen at intervals of approximately 30 million years. Now we are due one of these in the next few thousand years.

If such an event happens, then the impact of humans on the planet will pale into insignificance.

OK, having said that I do think that we should be more careful, and consider better the impact of our actions, but please get off this "OMG we are killing teh planet!!!" BS, and put our actions in some perspective.

Unless we get over our superiority complex issues, we will all die along with just about everything else.

Alien.

You would make a great politician. Nothing to worry about here go about your business.

We are killing this planet whether you want to ignore it or not.

No one can wreck havoc like mother nature. I'm not comparing mankind to the destructive power of the universe, but we are destroying non renewable resources at a rate we won't recover.

I give us 2 generations at this pace humankind is going.

Don't make silly comparisons to prove your point. That's like saying GW Bush isn't that bad because Hitler was worse.

Humans don't exist. I am a Zygorthian, from what you call the Andromeda galaxy, and you are simply figments of my imagination.

I think I will take that first comment as an insult as you are referring to the lying cheating idiots that get elected in RL, but I'll let you off anyway. ;)

Did you notice the part where I said we should be more careful and consider the effecxts of our actions, or did you just skip over it. Yes we do have ecological responsibilities as we are capable of realising them, but the title of this thread when combined with post #1 makes a claim that is false.

It claims that: "We have to be one of the worst things that has happened to earth", which is the claim I was disagreeing with. It was a comparative claim, so don't I have a right to make a comparative refutation.

In absolute terms we are not good for the planet, we are acting in a very irresponsible way. But that was not the question asked.

Possibly the man I respect most in this world, philosopher and professional foole, George Carlin had a theory about that; plastic.

The Earth wanted plastic. What for, only the Earth knows. So, she arranged for us to evolve. We eventually created plastic. WHen we have created enough, she will cease to tolerate our nuisance and send us away into oblivion again. Probably with a virus.

Leaving the Earth with it's plastic.

I whole heartedly agree with you, but I think we have surpassed the "we have to be careful stage".

I think we are closer to a critical level.

But maybe i should take Parfaire's example and just take 15 hits of acid and leave the milky way all together.

I'm realizing why i never post here as Jolt is acting up again. I would love to stay and debate but i don't have the 15 minutes it takes for bloody pages to load (not an exageration)

humans have a conscience (or must of us do) so when we do things that we know are wrong we feel guilt if a dog kills somthing or a cat, it means nothing to them.

Yet we kill more of are own kind than any other animal? Why?

The only reason why you think people are killing each other more then any other creature is because you never see Bear on Bear crime on the 6 o'clock news.

I think other creatures kill eachother at similar rates we do, with different motives.

Come on Jolt don't Fail me now.

Not cool little wolfies and foxies. People have overpopulated so much, we are slowly being programmed to kill one-another one person at a time.

I think he was referring to war and genocide more than the odd murder.

The only other animal that I know of that goes for out and out warfare are ants. They have probably killed more of themselves than we have. It would however be difficult for most species to get close to the self inflicted death toll as their total population would not allow it.

My Philosophy teacher says that the only difference between us Humans and them animals, is that we think about our mortality.

I didn't quite understand what he meant by that. Hence I failed his philosophy class. I got an A' for acting though :p

Ants are animals. I've witnessed a Red ant colony, take over and kill a whole nest of Black ants. i'm conservatively guessing about 100,000 blacks ants were destroyed.

This was just a week ago. I saw this with my own eyes. These were thousands of ants killing thousands of ants in a matter of hours.

The war in iraq has progressed for months with 1,716 dead americans so far, not to mention thousands of dead iraqis.

Ants killing ants costs nothing. The war in iraq cost $176,276,194,640 to date. We can't afford to kill eachother at the rates ants can.

Highest murder rate on earth is Columbia (0.63 per 1000 people)

The top 50 murderous countries in the year 2000 totalled about 180,000

Ants do that daily.

This just in! We have received reports that the koalas have now declared civil war! Two distinct sides have arisen: the Marsupialitives and the Rancheros. Militias are forming in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales, staunchley protecting their boarders from eucalyptus raiders of opposite sides.

Rumor has it that the wombats may be sending aid to the more democratically open Marsupialitives...

Stay tuned to Channel Twelve News of Romanore as the story develops!
