Dogperson - Catperson?

A number of times, people told me that there are dogpersons a d catpersons, that the animal you choose to have as a pet say a lot about your own character. Do you think that's true?
Me, I have a cat, I always had one or more cats. I like their independence, their elegance, their moody ways and their sometimes confused personality.
I never liked dogs too much as I have a bit of a problem with the smell and find them a bit too enthusiatic for my liking most of the time.
About my charcater : I'm a rather quiet person, with a close circle of friends. Intellectual rather than physically active, books rather than TV, tea rather than coffee.
So, does that make me a catperson? Or is that all just silly talk?

DAMN YOU! STOP READING MY MIND! I was just about to post a poll/thread about this.
BTW, I'm a dog person. Cats are like moody, high-maintenance girlfriends/trophy wives. I can tolerate them...barely.
I can't say I'd *never*, but I'd most likely not marry a woman who keeps cats. Their personalities tend to clash with mine...in a bad way.

Mindreading is one of the things we catpersons are known for ;)
I love dogs. I don't mind cats but I love dogs.
I'm a total cat person.
Dogs? Meh, they're okay. I definitely wouldn't have one around the house, though.

The irony is, of course, that cats actually require almost no attention. There only "training" requires dropping them in a litter box, from then on they'll always use it. They sleep for 20 hours a day, so most of the time they're out of the way. Feed 'em twice a day and let them outside and that's all required.
A dog on the other hand requires extensive training so it won't piss on the carpet, needs to be walked multiple times a day, and constantly wants to play.
Don't get me wrong, although I have a cat I would like a dog just as much (my parents don't like them). A couple years ago my dad's friend left his dog with us for 2 weeks and I loved it. I didn't mind the extra responsibility, but I can attest that dogs are a lot more high-maintenance than cats.

Don't forget, with proper training and conditioning, dogs can be trained to eat cats. ;) :)
needless to say I'm a dog person. Trapped in a house with 3 black cats. It isn't my fault I'm bitter.

I think it is true, to a certain degree. I love casts myself. I don't mind dogs in other people's houses, but I would never keep one, and I find them annoying often.
Anyway, what i actually wanted to say is that through an un-scientific survey of my aquiantances, I have found that people who dislike cats - the kind who say stuff like "cats are useless, they don't do anything" - consistantly rub me the wrong way in other ways. They're not the type of people I'd be friends with, somehow. Now I just find out how people feel about cats: it saves time!

absolutley true - i never get it when dog-people say cats are high maintenance, i mean, you don't even need to feed cats to be honest... they're quite happy going hunting after their own grub ;)
not that i do that of course. i have a cat and he's pretty damn spoilt :D
plus he's 16 years old now!
dogs seem too much like hard work - having to take them for walks, playing with them, ceaning up after they get loads of fur & other 'mess' everywhere (even after they're trained  )
definatley a cat person, me. i'm also quite quiet, shy, reserved, not energetic, etc

Please don't let your cats out, keep them in. There are to many diseases out there an "outside" cat can get in addition to accidents. Get them neutered or spayed and keep them in.

My sister has three cats... Two are outside cats and are normal. One's an inside cat, and is extremely weird (he goes outside *sometimes*... when you accidentally leave a door open).

You can't keep cats inside, they need to be free to roam outside in the great outdoors. Plus they'd stink up the joint if they were kept in constantly.

Im definatly a Dog person although cats would seem to have a more enjoyable life getting to laze about disapearing for 3/4 of the day only turning up for food Dogs have this strong workman like attitude and a Loyalty which i value.
I like both. I like the loyalty and frinedliness of dogs. My cats also like to be near me. It's funny how the youngest cats I have are the only ones who absolutely adore my dogs. While the rest would rather claw out dog eyes, the younger ones would start purring near a dog. Maybe it's because the only male pets I have are 2 parakeets. I wanted more and i didn't figure out that the one I named Krystal was really a boy until months later. My dogs wanted puppies and kittens were the next best thing.

We have managed for years to keep cats inside. In fact, the two we have now won't even go out if the door is left open. They won't "stink up the joint" if you clean the litter box every day.
We used to let ours go out, but some of them got lost or injured. Also, the vet told us about diseases that cats that go outside could get from other cats. We prefer to keep ours inside.
Cats are much preferable to dogs.
Dogs. . .slobbery, needy, high maintenance machines that can chase a ball.
Cats. . .quick, wonderfully independant, low maintenance machines that can do backflips when properly motivated with catnip and a string.
Cats. My family has nine cats, one dog and one rabbit. I love books more than movies and white wine over red. I like to let my mind wander but my feet need a direction and purpose.

I never knew a cat that wouldn't climb down a tree it climbed up.
But I do know a cat who used to pretend that when it was bored. My mom always fell for that an was trying her best to get that cat out of the tree, while it kept moving further up.
The moment my mom gave up and went back into the house, the cat would climb down and follow her, waiting for its dinner. :D
You don't know what a mocking black sense of humour is until you have seen the grin on the face of a cat....
Dog people want an animal that needs them, that is dependant.
Cat people want an animal that needs to be left alone sometimes so when love is given it is special.
Yes, a cat is largely useless but I don't want a worker, I want a pet. Dogs are practical and cats a just for fun.

Our cat Scout pulls stuff like that. There is a dried treelimb on our wall, the cats loved to climb it but it breaks so my mother would keep them off. Scout would slowly approach it and look at my mother, approach and look again and again until finally my mother would just say, "Scout." then she would leap down from the mantle and begin the procedure again. Just an attention getter that Scout.

Actually, because cats will kill for the sake of killing (they've been trained to kill pests for how long, afterall) it's better for local bird populations if you keep them in. Plus it keeps them out of fights with other cats.
If I didn't have roommates, I woudl have a kitty.
Although I would like to get a small dog (a Yorkshire terrier probably) and a cat. As long as you get the dog before the cat they're ok with each other. One of my cats (at my parent's house) used to groom my old dog. They would sleep together in her (the dog's) kennel. It was adorable.

I had cats as long as I can remember, and they always went out. They never harmed the bird population, as a cat will almost never catch an adult fit bird. They catch the old ones and those who are already injured...
And they normally enjoy fighting other cats

The other night, cats were in our garden. They tore our very large, very expensive pond fish to pieces, leaving them all over the garden. The two which remain are so terrified they haven't eaten since. And this is in addition to the crap they leave in our garden EVERY night.
Let your cats out. But I'll quite happily kill any I see going near my property. And I won't even make it quick and painless; after all, cats toy with their victims, so it's only fair they die the same way.

I love dogs-have had them since i've been a baby. Cats don't bother me, but I love the social interaction of a dog. Yes, they require more work and attention, but my dogs are three of my closest friends...they are what I like to call fuzz therapy...when i'm sad, i can just hug em and pet em and i feel a bit better. Though cats are fuzzy too and can function in much the same way...that is, if they don't hate to be held and petted.;)

So do birds, mice, rats, squirrels, moles, martens, ferrets, ...
Birds, mice, rats squirrels, moles, martens (martens? what're those?), and ferrets (ferrets? where the hell you live??) aren't fed a continuous diet of cat-food.
You own a cat, you know how awful their shit and piss smell. It's godawful. Even raccoon shit isn't as awful. Or as large. In fact. of all the animals you've listed (except maybe the marten, whatever that is), the cat drops the biggest, stinkiest dung I've ever had the misfortune to encounter. I've had people's cats use my container-box garden as a shitbox and there's absolutely nothing cute, engaging, amusing or funny about it. Cats are vermin.
And even though most domestic felines are routinely fed, in many cases to the point of being overfed, cats continue to needlessly hunt and kill other creatures. They are unwelcome in my home.
Besides which, and more to the point, I own birds. 3 examples of Agapornis Personata Personata, the black-masked Lovebird of Tanzania. They are very small parrots, who fill the same niche in their part of the world that sparrows do here. They have bright red beaks, black heads with white eye-rings, black eyes, green-blue iridescent wings, with bright yellow bibs on their chests. As with most parrots, they are quite intelligent, though these birds tend not to mimic.
As intelligent, as beautiful, as companionable as they may be, I cannot underscore the horror I feel with the thought of some interloping cat finding its' way into my home and harming my birds. I can't guarantee I wouldn't kill it, or injure it gravely if I had the chance.
Dogs - dogs are less of a threat. Dogs can usually be directed away from birdcages, or after a time, learn to ignore them as instructed. But canines and humanity have a much older, much more established relationship. Canines and simians have a great deal in common, most importantly the importance of the extended family unit as a social structure. Adopting the offspring of pack wolves into human tribal groups was a natural.
All I know about cats is for some reason people like them.

I suppose I'm a cat person. I love how they act all aloof and cool, and then totally surpise you with some stupid antic, like accidentally rolling off the chair. I can watch my cat doing stupid things for hours - it cracks me up!
I love dogs, though. When I was little, I had a cat who was quite happy to share a kennel with the dog. Some cats who are around dogs all the time as kittens, and who have outgoing personalities, can become very dog-like, demanding attention and games, and wanting to run around the yard with you. My current cat has dog-like moments, but is nothing like the pseudo-dog I had when I was wee.
I don't understand people who like one animal and hate another. I think if you love dogs or cats, then surely you can appreciate the characteristics of other animals that make them unique. I'm a sucker for animals. If I wasn't renting, I'd probably have a whole lot more babies. I really would love a dog, but I'm already committed to my cat and my lizard, and I haven't a big enough yard. I get my dog fix from the dogs in my street. There's a jack russell who gets really excited when I come home, and scuttles out of his yard next door to greet me. He's a cutey. I can tolerate dog crap on my lawn.
We have lots of kitties in our street, so my cat is constantly bullied by gangsta-cats, but she has been known to make friends and bring them home to visit. I once woke up with a strange orange cat sleeping with her on my bed, which was bizarre.

Love dogs AND love cats, albeit both for different reasons. Maybe because I'm European :p
No seriously. In the 80's some Harvard study tried to tie cat/dog owning to certain kinds of personality. It failed utterly in all countries, except in the US. Cat-owners there were found to be more liberal, more free-thinking, and higher educated. Dog-owners were found to be more conservative, authoritarian, and lower educated. But, if you ask me, there's no such thing as "the typical personality of a dog/cat owner", although there might be an inclination. My own research seems to reveal that dog/cat owning personality fluctuates immensely, and that it is more tied with external happenings (housing, wealth, political and social context at the time of questioning) that influences personality, not cat/dog ownership. The only thing that seems to appear consistently is that the general attitude towards dogs is not all that extreme (you like them, or you don't), whereas the attitude towards cats differs more to extremities (either you love them, or you hate them). Don't know why exactly, however.

I dont like dogs, cats, or pretty much any type of animal at all. If I were to keep a pet it would have to be something that could be kept out of the way, like fish or turtles. So, what does that say about me?
I'm also a catlover. I used to have like 15 or more stray cats around my house who reguarly stops by and I just love to take care of them. My girlfriend loves cats and we constantly jokes about having 101 cats like in 101 dalmations. :-)

I'm a cat person mostly, but I think it depends on what experiences you've had with each animal. Like when I was young I was almost bitten by this bitch of a German shepard my Uncle had, which naturally scared the hell out of me :(
But I've had my cat Tazzy for about ten years now and ever since she was a kitten she would lie on my chest at night, being all purry and adorable although we would then get pissed off with eachother and wrestle :p
Some dogs are georgeous though, like old English Sheepdogs and St. Bernards <sp?>. They're all so big and slobbery and warm! But cats are so independant and look so wise the way they stare out of windows for hours on end and then just curl up and sleep and you wonder what it was they were thinking about for so long....
But hell, I'm British and I s'pose that means I'm meant to love pets more than people, which is pretty true sometimes

In all my life, I have never seen a dog jumping from fence to fence, occasionally stopping in someone's garden to do the naughty. If you have seen a dog doing this, especially a larger dog, I'd love for you to film it and put it on the web so that I can see it -- I imagine it's rather funny to watch :D.
