Sharing the housework?

A new law in Spain ...

Housework looms for Spanish men

A marriage vow could include agreeing to take turns with chores
Spanish men who refuse to lift a finger around the house are facing new legal sanctions.

MPs in Spain have drawn up a marriage contract for use in civil ceremonies which obliges men to share household chores and the care of children and elderly family members.

The new law, which will be introduced this summer in Spain, promises a revolution in a country where nearly half of all men admit to doing no housework at all. ...

I doubt if a law is sufficient to change social behaviour, but the idea is original at least...

Morons. Bloody authoritarian governments trying to make laws for everything. Why can't they just leave people alone? (Answer: because the people are too stupid/lazy to protect themselves from government)

That's brilliant. I hope it works.

What a piss poor law. Here is why I think that....

For the record, I will do chores and share the housework that has never been a issue. Now, for my job I can be away from home for 1 week in a streach. Therefore I could not fill in my half of the work for that week, hence me commiting a illegal act. Second, if for some reason one of the partners has the luxury of not having to work and raise children, the other has to arrive from work and share half the housework. It just dosen't add up. Third, a government has no business telling its citizens how they should and should not run thier households. In short, I think this sucks.

My parents share the chores.
My dad washes the car, my mom picks up after the dog, and I do everything else :P

Stupidest law I've ever seen. If a family doesn't want to split the chores, what right does the government have to tell them they have to? That's just stupid!

Stupid law. If women really feel like men need to do more household chores, then here's a thought: STOP MARRYING GUYS WHO WON'T DO CHORES. If you find yourself with a husband who won't pull his weight, and if you were dumb enough to marry a guy who's not willing to talk it out like a grownup, then divorce his ass. If women stopped putting out for the jerks of the world, there wouldn't be (heterosexual male) jerks. If women stopped marrying men who refuse to do domestic chores, then men would do domestic chores. Women need to quit expecting somebody else to take responsibility for their personal problems.

Probably the most fucked up law I've ever heard.

good intentions, but the law is impossible to enforce. it's a recurring trend today, it seems, governments believing that you can legislate the way society should work.

4 out of 11 aint bad.

Though this is a red herring. Where you are has not relation to if your views are valid or not.

I'm lucky. My hubby has always done his share. He does his own laundry, plus he takes care of the yard, does repairs in the home (LOTS OF!) Takes out the garbage. Collects the garbage. Probably cooks more than me, and works a full time job an hour away from home, and is sometimes away for a week as well. Not to mention he's the most amazing guy in the world. He's a Saint! Everyone else says so too. He treats me like a goddess. :fluffle:

So, now, is Spain going to take tax money and develope a "housework squad" to enforce this law?

The article says that not doing the share would negatively affect a possible divorce settlement, that's all.

Well, then if that's the only difference than a normal one, then it's not bad.

Hell, if I get married and the guy doesn't do anything around the house, he's out on his ass... or just never getting laid.

And in that sense, it is perhaps tolerable, if a little odd. Its a law that could be very invasive otherwise. Simply making it a consideration in divorce settlements is minor enough that I'm not outraged. ;)
