Polls close in Iran with no clear winner
Fri Jun 17, 7:34 PM ET
Iran - Millions of Iranian voters cast ballots Friday in the most contested presidential election in the Islamic Republic's 26-year-history, but were left with few clues as to whom their new leader would be.

Preliminary results for the No. 2 spot in Iran's government were expected Saturday, Interior Ministry officials said. But none of the seven candidates was expected to get the simple majority needed to win outright, meaning the two top vote-getters will likely square off in an unprecedented runoff to be held in the coming weeks.I say we delegate Jeb Bush, Katherine Harris, the whole Florida Elections Commission and the Republican Supreme mullahs(Judges) ...to "help" them get it rigth.

lets export US democracy :D :D  :D

Ocean, you think Jew-Watch.com is a credible source. I will NEVER take anything you say seriously again, be the particular topic legitimate or not. Your credibility on this forum is shot, and your "news" threads accompanied by dumbass comments are getting lame. Lay off on the number signs, will you?
Really, your ignorance is showing.

I am hoping the reformer doesn't win, every time I hear "reformer" I think back to Gorbachev and picture a country collapsing due to the stupidity of a leader and his ability to bypass the constitution in his decisions.

A pity for the more reform minded cleric who missed out by 600,000 votes. Perhaps when there were seven candidates some sort of STV would have been a better idea than this run-off. Nevertheless, it's encouraging to see that there were several candidates with different positions and that people didn't all just endorse the Ayatollah's favourite. This is progress.

I'll take one.

But how is it too close to call? It was always going to be a run-off election. There were like 7 or somthing canidates, and you need 50% to win outright. That was never going to happen.

The Palestinians are to blame for all the middle east's problems.
Why are the [U.S.] still associated with this malignant cancer known
as the United Nations? They [UN] are anti-American; anti-Semitic; they
cheat, steal and lie (oil-for-food fiasco); they (Kofi) preach being
anti-gun with a stash of high-powered weapons hidden in the basement of
one of their buildings; they have a Human Rights Commission that
includes human rights violators, such as Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Zimbabwe,
Congo, Libya, China, and Cuba, etc., etc....and now a credible book that
reveals that they are drug-abusing perverts, as well.

lately Bush discourse is that their elections dont count...because they are rigged...and that the conservative candidate was going to win easy.

But as far as I know the two moderate reformists are slugging it out, the third place going well behind to the conservative mayor of Tehran.
I personally don't think the people in Iran want conservative Islamic fundamentalism. So they are voting for reform. In a few years, the old guard of Ayatollahs is going to be dead too, and then you'll see even less involvement in the process on their behalf.
But even less than oppression the Iranians would like to see foreign intervention in their country, of which they are understandably proud. Their police drives Mercedes Benz!

It's pretty obvious that the majority don't want the fundamentalist theocracy that's in place. I've seen tons of Iranian student sites and blogs calling for a more moderate government. Hopefully, it'll happen soon.

I support reform in Iran, but not if that means bowing to the US and to Capitalism. If that is the "reform" then I will take the lesser of two evils and go with the theocracy.

Cool! I'll tell all the fundamentalist Christians that we can have a theocracy here in the US as long as it ends Capitalism.

Rafsanjani to face Tehran mayor
Iran goes to presidential runoff

-- Rafsanjani 6,159,453

-- Ahmadinejad 5,710,354

-- Karroubi 5,066,316

-- Qalibaf 4,075,189

-- Moin 4,054,304

Two other candidates garnered less than 2 million votes each.

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani will face Tehran Mayor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a runoff election for the Iranian presidency, the Ministry of Interior said.

With all ballots counted, conservative Rafsanjani had more than 6.1 million votes, while the harder-line conservative Ahmadinejad had 5.7 million, Iranian state-run radio and television announced Saturday. The top two candidates face each other Friday.

Reformist cleric Mehdi Karroubi trailed in third place with nearly 5.1 million votes.

The conservative former police chief Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and reformist Mostafa Moin followed in fourth and fifth respectively with more than 4 million votes.

In a situation of two evils, you must choose the lesser. Thus, I would support Christian Fundamentalism in the US as long as it got rid of Capitalism. Better to be only oppressed one way than two.

Oops. Well my last update was the news yesterday. But don't worry, I don't think the majority will vote conservative.
And if they do then hey, the people have spoken. They now have a clear choice: Fundamentalism or Reform. I'll respect the outcome either way.

I support reform in Iran, but not if that means bowing to the US and to Capitalism. If that is the "reform" then I will take the lesser of two evils and go with the theocracy.
Can't there be a third way?
And besides, if the Iranians choose to adopt capitalism (which they probably will even moreso in the future), and if they manage to become friends with the US (which they probably won't anytime soon) then that's their decision, and whatever disagreements I have with American policy (and believe me, I've got heaps), it is their country, and there they can do whatever they want.

in most places there are simply two evils. There are a few exceptions like Colombia or nations that have no evil options at all.

You can say "god". Allah is not a name, it's just the Arab word for "god" (to my knowledge).
In Iran they are of course mainly speaking Farsi (some call it Parsi now), but "Allah" has been taken as a given. Same goes for many other non-Arabic muslims.
