Since back when the country had barely begun, late 1700's, early 1800's...political parties weren't emphasized as much as they are today.
So it would seem to me that voters would vote for Senators and Representatives that would properly vote in favour of their state, and not any political party's agenda.
Today it's quite the opposite. Voters just see Democrat and Republican and follow suit.
Am I correct? Was representation of one's state more important in the past as compared to today?
