I'm curious what y'all think about Tim Burtons new Willy Wonka movie.

I just got in a huge argument with my friend over it and I'm curious how heated the opinions are elsewhere.

It just goes to show how sucky Hollywood is when they have to remake really classic films. Can we have some new ideas?

Why screw with a classic like Wonka, Wilder was awesome in it, Depp will only make it painful to watch.

I didnt like the original story-too freaking zooted for me.
Add Johnny Depp and there is no way I'll waste a dime on it.

I'm willing to give Depp a shot in this. I don't think he will match the performance of Wilder but the story itseld is going to be truer to the book from my understanding.

It's a whole lot better then the rumor that Marilyn Manson was going to take the role.

I like Tin Burton so I bet he can produce make a pretty awe inspiring magical movie. Although I haven't heard much about this movie and have heard no heated opinions whatsoever.

Oh a somewhat related note, I recently heard something about a Lion Witch and Wardrobe movie coming ou tthat I thought Tim Burton was going to work on but then I heard he was off of it and now I dont know what is going on. Anyone know anythign about this? I loved teh Chronicles of Narnia books.

You're new, so I won't complain about having to say this again, but-

Shouldn't we be waiting until a movie comes out and people have actually seen it before we start making qualitative statements about the film? Maybe I'm just a nut, but I tend to think you have to see a film to judge it, especially if we are going to be making comparisons to a previous film. (Yes, you can probably guess with films like Dude, Where's My Car, but even then you are just able to guess that it isn't something you'd like.)

I agree, but conceptually, I think that Burton might be better tapped into the proper level of creepyness that runs through Roald Dahl's works. Wilder's Wonka was all too funloving and not nearly meanacingly strange enough.

The Wilder version was geared towards freaking kids. Of course it's going to be campy! It was a perfect, fun movie.

That's why they had such a lovely undercurrent of creepyness. Kids like that stuff. The WB/Wilder version couldn't freak anyone out... (except maybe for the only truly decently creepy scene... where Wilder is chanting as the boat keeps speeding up...)

First, Planet of the Apes.

Second, and this is only the impression I get from the trailers, because as I said you have see a movie to compare it to something, the primary difference is that Wilder was childlike and Depp is childish. Wilder was menacing, especially when he would snap and then return to normal, or his rather dark "No. Don't. Stop."

I don't trust Burton, he has dropped the ball more than he has succeeded and defenitely rings of someone who is at thier best when there is someone to tell him, "no." (amending that on whatever the conditions where for Big Fish, a beautiful movie.)

Hmm, perhaps, but when I look at films like Edward Sissorhands, Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas I see Dahlesque influences everywhere. Don't forget he also produced Dahl's James and the Giant Peach

(Corpse Bride looks really good too.)

Of those, the only one I really respect is the one that he didn't direct. (I will admit to a possible unfair prejudice against Edward since I was tear gased by a prankster in that film, though I didn't like it that much before that either...)

You must admit though, that James was a hell of a lot more creepy than either Wonka or Matilda... though I would put all 3 books on par for creepyness.

Let's just say I'm hopeful.

First of all, the original movie scared me, but with Depp as Wonka...
