I'm moving to Alexandria on the 22nd (yes...that's next Wednesday) and was just wondering how many people around here live in the DC area.

Also, do NS members have meet-and-greets IRL like some other forums?

I love it here! Especially given that I used to live in Rockville.

Well, anything is better than the People's Republic of Maryland. Except Wards 7 and 8. Then again, PG County is starting to make even those locations look good.

I avoid going downtown now. After having my office window shot out in broad daylight (at 9th & E), I refuse to work there. And I'll only go to specific locations by specific routes at night.

It's hard to call Maryland communist when Robert Ehrlich is governor. And it wasn't Maryland's politics I disliked. DC is even better to my tastes (90% for Kerry, 9% for Bush, 1% for Nader. If only the whole country...)

I also lived in what used to be Connie Morella's district in Maryland, if that makes it better for you.

There are definately parts of the city I don't go to. I also don't like taking the Metro late at night. But I love Northwest.

I used to live in Montgomery County as well. The county itself is extremely liberal, even though they elected the most liberal Republican they could find.

Any state where I can't carry a gun to defend myself, which limits my purchases of firearms by saying a state board has to approve a handgun design (and disapproves of nearly all), which won't allow abused women to carry concealed to defend themselves, which allows me to be robbed with no recourse (I've been robbed in DC and Maryland), is a place where I will spend little time, regardless of how great any attraction may be.

I am armed 24/7 in Virginia - legally.

I never have those problems. Then again, I live in Fairfax. Screw Anacostia area, I never go there.

I have a good friend from the Old Guard that still lives there. Beautiful place and I love to visit there. Certainly a great place to live for one who wishes not to drink any longer. Their police department can be best described as Extreme PD! Always on the cutting edge of the best technology to invade your privacy and trend setters in pushing the limits of law and order. Those folks don't wait for them to drink and drive. They go right into the bars and round them up from there!

How safe are the "asian" and "caribbean" areas up there? I "have a hankerin'" for some good food. :D

That's good to know. Although I don't drink any longer, I still like to go out to bars with friends and have a fake beer every now and then. ;)

Well, there aren't that many clearly defined neighborhoods in the city in that sense. There's Chinatown, but that's the closest you'll get to that sort of regional ethic divisions. Divisions are more along the lines of predominatly white or predominately black, as the city is majority black right now. There are tons of good restaurants all over the city, so that won't be a problem :D. I'll be happy to give you some names.

I live in Prince George's County, Maryland. If you want the specific town, TG me.

I'm not aware of any NS meet-and-greets. I am aware of a couple of people who live near D.C. who play NS.

Drinking rules really aren't as strict as you think they are. Trust me.

Then you will like Old Alexandria if it is still the same. They had all the streets closed off at night and it's just bar after bar after bar and beautiful women everywhere. As far as food goes. I have never been there long enough to get past the Blue Crab. I love it!

In DC, if I do go downtown, I avoid Georgetown (it is overrated). The Adams Morgan area has an eclectic selection of restaurants, as does parts of New York Avenue.

Parts of Fairfax have become heavily asian, but there aren't too many "good" restaurants.

The area I live in, Herndon, has become heavily Salvadorean, and there are some really excellent places - but they look like "hole in the wall" places.

Small fact: The gangs in Herndon tend not to engage in activity within Herndon. They DO however, roam elsewhere (mostly Springfield) and wreak havoc there.

Still, the overall crime and violence is much, much lower in Northern Virginia than in suburban Maryland or in DC.

I certainly never saw evidence of it in Old Alexandria. Going into the bars was referring to an article I read a couple months ago. I think they were testing their limits but seemed well prepared to defend it. I certainly hope that tatic didn't fly for the business owners sake.

And that's what I like about Maryland...

What, the 65 percent higher violent crime and murder rate in Montgomery County (as compared to Fairfax County) on a per 10,000 person basis, or the nearly 100 percent higher violent crime and murder rate in Prince George's County?

I didn't enjoy it when I was stabbed in Germantown, Maryland. There's nothing like handing over your cash, and cooperating, and then there's nothing you can do to stop them from going as far as they like.

And the police are no help.

As for gays, there are plenty of them here. The state government may not like them, but Northern Virginia seems a fairly liberal place for local government.

I haven't seen it in the bars near my house. The DC police, in my mind, have a lot more to focus on than drinking.

Hmm... like the recent DC police focus on jaywalking.

The aggressive "in the bar" policing was a temporary Fairfax and Montgomery County thing.

Heh, the "People's Republic of Maryland", I like that. I'm from Bel Air, MD. It's a shame that only 3 counties (PG, Montgomery, Baltimore) and Baltimore city are the only Democratic regions in the state yet, because of their massed populations, get the say the majority of the time (the slots issue being foremost). It's like a Springer episode: "Baltimore crackheads and the rich liberal douchebags who love them". Ehrlich is mah nigga though, a pot smoking conservative who hates multiculturalism :P, even if he does have that Essex yokel accent. If Mikulski was on fire, I would piss on her to put out the fire.....but only after she was long dead. Hehehe. Whispering Legs is right, though, most of our state is fine but the urban and immediately surrounding areas are ridden with drugs and crime, I'm definitely one to know.
I do like living here, though, beats Bumfuck, Iowa. Got mountains, got Ocean City, got the Chesapeake. I'm not the biggest fan of living in a sea of Negrotia, but I'll still take it over living with pasty ass "Oh ya, woold yoo like some pop and brat?" Wisconsin Scandinavians and what not. Their innocence and niceness somehow annoys the hell out of my cynical, blackened, aloof, industrial ass East Coast perspective :P.

people's republic of maryland my ass. i lived in gaithersburg for a long time, and that was kinda crummy, but a few years back, moved down county (think bethesda). as far as i can tell, all the crimes here are jaywalking, and marijuana.

Not sure what you mean by contradicting the "People's Republic" joke with generalities of crime in Gaithersburg and Chevy Chase. "The People's Republic of Maryland" is a reference to Maryland's predominantly liberal policies by way of an allusion to "The People's Republic of China." As for crime, I have no idea why you're trying to contradict me, read my statement again: "most of our state is fine, but the urban and surrounding areas are ridden with drugs and crime, I'm definitely one to know". I was obviously talking about the giant negrotian crack and heroin den Baltimore and such, not Gaithersburg and Bethesda.
