first off, i want to ask everywould-be poster here to please respect each other. i hold the highest respect for anyone who honestly believes what they believe. i have friends of all belifes (christian, jewish, wiccan, buddist, atheist, agnostic, etc.). i'm not trying to attack anyone or thier belifes and i want to ask you to do the same if you wish to post.

this question came to me while reading all of the religious threads here and i just wanted to ask in all seriousness:

Why do you believe what you believe?

this gose for any belife system. i'm asking this question of everyone (even atheists)

i'm agnositc (derived from the root gnosis meaning knowledge). i'm just curious and would like to know peoples views, thats all.

and the "a" means without. what fun.

anyway, agnostic, but i certainly don't believe in the judaeo-christian/semitic concept of god. why? because i have just too many problems with christianty's teachings, the changing nature of god in the bible, etc... and i'm not entirely prepared to limit myself to the view that there is absolutely no possibility of a higher power.

I'm atheist because I think that religion is a force of traditionalist-conformism and that the beliefs are illogical more often that not. I also think that the indecisiveness of agnosticism is pointless, and that an agnostic is possibly someone who knows religion is wrong, but is afraid to give up hope of the existence of a God-like being.

no offence intended, it just seemed a bit weird to say the "gnosis means knowledge" part without the "a means without" bit.
and yes, i'm an agnostic too. don't get so angry, man.
yes, i agree, "Without knowledge [of whether there's a god or not]" is my interpretation.

first i would like to thank you for taking this seriously.

i like to think of agnosticism as kind of the acceptence that we are all human and don't know what the truth is. it is very close to atheism to me but i just find it hard to belive that the universe just sprung out of nothing. i don't really think of a god as like a father figure, but more a kind of essence that everything comes from

Well, it came in phases. Originally I just wanted to try it out, and it worked and it changed my life, so I believed. But then comes the growth stage during which you learn, at that point I believed because I understood. Then came the questioning stage. I sought out knowledge on alternatives, dabbled a little here and there, but came to realize where the truth was at. Now I believe because I know.
