Could Howard Dean have won in 2004?

I'm no Democrat, but plenty of people I know are, and most of them preferred Dean over Kerry. I'm just wondering: suppose Dean had received the presidential nomination? Could he have won?

Poll coming.

He did not win the primary, so he could not have won the general election. :headbang:

I don't think so, since his views were pretty hard left (by american standards) and so could not carry the center, which is necessary to being elected. Had he run a campaign like Clinton in 92, he or any other charismatic Dem would have one.

Simply put, Bush had nothing going for his reelection. However, Kerry was such a weak candidate that he couldn't win despite these weaknesses.

Suppose he had won the primary, though?

Well, he did have the idea that without him terrorists from Iraq where going to come over here and force you to marry someone of your own sex, abort all your babies (including already grown ones), and force you to pray to Allah so you better get the jump on them and make everyone pray to god. Or that he was the sole barrier that kept us from surrendering to France. He had that.

No, Dean was less electable than Kerry. He was an idiot trying to get votes from white men with Confederate flags. Remember that?

You're either with us (Republicans, Bush) or with the terrorists, there's no middle ground!

I'm surprised he didn't try to revive HUAC

I liked Dean:
Dean had a few problems:
a. the Media hated him. They replayed that scream over and over again to get rid of him. it wasn't just conservative/republican media, they all seemed too.
b. He got into a insult fest with another candidate. Only repoublicans can insult and still be electable...never understood that. But than again I didn't expect Bush to win again.
c. He was one of the only ones against the war from the start.
d. He spoke from the heart.

Had many things going for him:
a. He was one of the only ones starting out against the war.
b. He spoike from the heart
c. He had root support.

Speaking from the heart made everything he said be more feeling and trusting. However, somethings we say stuff before we stop ourselves.

As much as I support Howard Dean personally, he's too far left (by the standards of most Americans) to have got the undecideds, and even some of the Democrats might have gone over to Bush because Dean was just so extreme.

Dean is a fiscially Conservative Governor. How far left can he be?

Explain Deans left views?

They actually did once do a poll where they asked respondents whom they would vote for in a hypothetical Bush vs. Dean presidential election. According to the poll, Bush would win every state except for Vermont! Dean winning the dem primary would have been a Republican wet dream.

So the only people who actually know how good a person his policies are voted for him to win?

Man, is this why I fear for America sometimes lol

I wish he could have won. But so much of what is appealing about Dean (his straightforward, honest approach) is also what crucifies him as a politician (speaking before he thinks about the conseque.nces!). But, as a govenor, he had the experience with responsibility and leadership that Kerry, as a senator, lacked.

I think Edwards also would have had a good shot, though he had little experience in upper level government.

I would have liked Dean, as a democrat I would have preferred him over Kerry.

But, since the media harped about his "mental breakdown" (since when is being passionate considered breaking down?) he never could have won. Shame, since he won't get another chance.

here we see a meme utterly lacking in evidence, yet widely believed. the human animal is prone to adopt widely believed memes purely on the basis on hearing them a number of times. certain humans have discovered this fact and frequently use it to manipulate their way to higher positions in the dominance hierarchy. other humans, being less aware of this fact, make easy prey for these manipulations and actually wind up working to further them - even when doing so is clearly against their own interests.

If he didn't do that stupid scream thingy... But really, I'd much have rather had him run than Kerry!
