But I'm Curious, how do you control somehting like that? It had no roll or yaw control. I am doubting that this toy is really all it seems.

There's a lawnmower RC toy that can do the same. There's also a Snoopy one (it's a model of Snoopy lying on top of his doghouse).

I've seen this sort of thing before; it's nothing new. It being a boat *and* a plane, however, is fucking cool.

Wouldn't that great big wing/rudder assembly be the obvious location for both? It certainly isn't very stable in the air. Probably light as feather, any big wind could cause it to lift of the ground or water when you don't intend it to. Its pretty spectacular though. I want one real bad.

Quite an interesting toy. I wonder what power system it uses? Batteries or actual fuel?

16-06-2005, 05:13
It must cost a lot, as they obviously must use some sort of Lithium battery to save weight. (or be satisfied with run time of 30 seconds) As for control surfaces, there are two independent ones in the tail.

I MUST have one of these.

Also, imagine if they could copy this design for some multi-purpose fighter boat/aircraft.

Not likely Texpundistan. Even expanding it on a scale to where you have an actual person sitting in the pilots seat would be difficult to achieve if you want to have that level of agility and low stall speeds.

Technically, you COULD build a scaled up fighter like that. However, you would probably not have equal amounts of agility and mobility.

But yes, it does seem quite an interesting toy. Unfortunately, it seems the producer, according to the site, will not be selling it anytime soon.

True...but imagine a upscaled unmanned/remotely-controlled drone. Of course it wouldn't have the exact ammount of agility and mobility, but the agility and mobility would be to scale.

Of course you would also have to find material that would provide the scaled up lightness and durability of the craft as well. I am not certain if titanium or aluminum would fit the roles though.

True, but I wonder if there is a composite material out there that could fit the bill. *shrugs* Who knows?

It's an interesting line of thought, though. :)

That's along the lines I was thinking of, but I don't know the specs of CF, so I didn't want to try to make any guess. :)

There is a brief clip (about 3 sec) in the full WMV that shows the rear stabilizer bar is actually 2 articulating aereolons (sp). IIRC my fluid dynamics, when the prop-wash passes over those in opposite articulation it creates the spin. In synchronous articulation, lift or counter-lift to work with the "flying-wing" lift effect of the body shape .

The whole thing is made out of light-weight foam and uses a brushless electric motor (prob one of the new 35g ones with 20oz thrust).

The kits are in pre-production. No pre-orders taken (yet).

Right, and when you get to the end of the reflecting pool, you go Vertical, loop, land, and race back to the other end of the pool. Imagine the Stares. :D

I wonder how long the battery lasts. I got a R/C hovercraft a while ago (impulse birthday present) - 10/15 mins of hover for 4 hours charge. It was made by Taiyo R/C and had one engine. Avoid.

Mine is gas, not electric. It's very, very fast, and I need a lot of room to make a turn.

It also does a number on other models that it impacts. In order to hold the nose down, it has a steel bar screwed onto the front like a bumper.

I've already destroyed several plastic RC boats that got in the way.

I think the flying-boat thingy is using a 20oz-thrust 35g brushless electric motor.

I've see gas powered boats being raced on the Spokane River (just above the dam) by an RC boat club in downtown Spokane WA. They are bugger-all fast... and LOUD.

MVVS 4.2 GFS/R ABC RC combat (cat.# 3048)
0,73 kW @ 17,000 rpm
301 grams

otherwise known as the .26 Combat, and I have a 9x4 prop on it.

The airboat has a wire shield around the prop, and there are two vertical fins that move together for steering.

When it's sitting still in the water, the deck is even with the surface of the water. The bottom is carved with a step for stabilization, and it will plane quite well. The weight in front was to prevent it from rising too much and catching air.

I haven't yet seen an RC boat with a water prop that can get away from it.
