Here's the situation:

I am doing a very important essay on the G8 summit, entitled "The G8 should do more to help Africa. Discuss."

To help us research this, our teacher divided us into 4 groups, and each group has to research a different area. My group is doing Trade. Once we collect together some detail, we will all spread about to share our information. Then we write the essay.

To help us even further, our teacher gave us a help sheet with questions we should answer.

However, I can't find anything for three of the questions. These are:

1.In what ways could trade with African countries be described as unfair?

2.What is being done to help this situation?

3.What COULD be done to help the situation?

Does anyone know the answers, or can point me towards them?

All help appreciated, thank you.

Doesn't anyone know about this subject?

If you just can't be bothered to type, remember, I'm giving this information to the rest of the group, who in turn are spreading it to the rest of the class of 20 or so people.

Please help.

1. The Africans don't benefit from the money made.
2. I don't know... but having leaders who represent the population is a step in the right direction. ie. Nelson Mandela
3. Encourage development of democratic governments in the region, then nationalise resources and use the revenue from those resources to improve standard of living, healthcare and education.

Talk about how africa's natural resources are exploited without poor africans getting any benefit from it. Then use Debeers as an example. You can also talk about Isreal dealing in conflict diamonds and the human rights abuses they cause.

That's bound to get your group an A.

Hey, that sounds like a good idea.

Better than mine, which was to learn the rhetoric of Geldof and write it down.

I know, bad idea.

1.In what ways could trade with African countries be described as unfair?

2.What is being done to help this situation?

3.What COULD be done to help the situation?

1) No access to Western markets for African goods (except for precious minerals.

2) Interesting way you put that. It could be interpreted in two ways:

a) What is being done with the ostensible purpose of helping Africa

b) What is being done that actually has good effects in Africa.

To a), lots is being done with the ostensible purpose of helping Africa, debt relief without strings attached for example. Aid too fits into this category. It has the ostensible purpose of helping Africa, yet has little or no effect. Africa has been given, over the years, $600 Billion in aid, to a continent with abundant natural resources, and lots of fertile land. What has been obtained with this money? The poorest continent, and getting poorer.

To b), the answer is short: bugger all

3) What could be done?

a) Allow them to access markets in the West
b) Aid should only be given where there have been reforms in governance.

Questions of Governance should address 3 criteria:

1) Liberty, and constitutional, meaning democratic government, respect for all basic human rights, and the rule of law

2) Transparency, meaning accountability, and a lack of corruption.

3) Public goods. One of the duties of government is to maintain key public goods. This means infrastructure, and education. Outside South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa's infrastructure would be hard pressed to keep up with the needs of New South Wales.
