People ask me why do I always turn on CC when I watch T.V.
Well, because I don't want to admit that without it I have trouble understanding and catching everything that's going on, I came up with the excuse that keeping the CC on keeps my mind stimulated, especially during those long movies and dumb T.V. shows.
Well, is this right at all? I've been thinking about it and it seems logical that keeping CC on and reading while watching T.V. works out your brain. Multitasking, your reading, comprehending, and watching the T.V. all at the same time. And it's not like you can read slow with the CC on...

Try watching foreign language films with subtitles, maybe you'll learn another language.
Surely.
Except the subtitles never match the dialogue properly. Try putting the movie in French, and with French subtitles, and even if you don't know a word of it, you'll start to notice the subtitles aren't saying the same things as the actors. It's annoying.
But it's still somewhat useful to watch movies with subtitles. I do it because my kids are always too loud...and I don't know if it's age, but I can never quite hear all the dialogue. It seems that movies tend to have much more dramatic volume changes than they used to...way too loud, down to a barely audible conversation...I'm always fighting with the volume control. Captioning helps stop that.

I do it all the time.
It makes sense of dialouge that is indecipherable.
It also reveals new dialouge you may have missed before.

I think you are just an idiot. How dumb do you have to be to not understand TV? It requires no thinking whatsoever.

To SMN: That is the dumbest and most useless comment I've seen in a while. Unless you have something useful or at least nice to say, don't say anything. You're just wasting bandwith.
As for the CC, I do too. That's how I first learned English and it really helps. It's true that it often doesn't match what the characters are saying but when you sometimes get confused or just stop paying attention for a little bit, CChelps you catch up. Only thing I dislike is watching a dramatic movie and seeing the CC say [Dramatic music in background] That ruins it for me. Other than that, I was shocked to see how many people, of all ages use CC.

I watch Hong Kong movies with subtitles and chinese language because the english dubbing is almost always terrible.

Oh yay, I get the first post from the random jerk who comes in and fucks around on NS.

I have absolutly no ****ing clue how to put on CC, so I just record the show I can't understand using IO and watch it several times in a row until I know 100% what they are saying... :)

I keep CC on all the time. It's especially useful when watching a subject you aren't familiar with and haven't heard the jargon before. You can see what they're saying.

Don't worry, I turn on the CC too, and I'm pretty young :P Especially at nighttime, when I can't turn it up too loud and wake other people up.

I use it because I like to leave my TV on mute. Yes it seems silly, but, how can you judge why someone does something so harmless as stupid? Plus it's also funny when the sounds are captioned.

What I always tell people is that without it people have a tendency to always try to get your attention with a pointless and loud question during the part of the dialogue that everything else was leading up to.
"This can only mean that the killer was..."
"...So who's this guy with the mustache? Is he like a detective or something?"
'...Of course, it was him all along."
or:
"And the final score in tonight's Lakers-Jazz game was..."
"... Hey! did you catch the score on the game today? I missed it."
"...And that was the sports report."
