I was wondering if anybody could give me a hand for my history coursework and reccomend any books about McCarthyism which expresses an opinion either for or against it?

"The Crucible" by Author Miller can be read as anti-McCarthyism. I don't know too many people in favour of witch hunts and faking evidence to create a fear of communist infiltraters...

Basically, just read up on McCarthy and decide for yourself whether he was a bastard or not. Form your own opinion, don't let a book dictate it.

Arthur Miller also has some great works about the subject, as well as some great works written in that period that express leftist views in an implied manner - the Crucible and Death of a Salesman come to mind.

I KNEW I was forgetting an important one!

Well we basically need to make a debate using different sources which is why i need ones which are highly biased either one way or the other

Take the information - empirical evidence - and twist it one way or another. Make up your own. I'm a State-Level Debater (whoopty-fucking-doo), and its taught me one thing, how to manipulate evidence. Its easy; do it.

The problem with this is that almost everybody who knows anything about him pretty much think he was a complete moron(and asshole), who only tried to further his political career by yelling "COMMIE!".

There are a FEW(very few) who think otherwise, but it's almost impossible to find anything of the sort.

I've actually managed to find a few books which use the recently released soviet venona documents which say they were trying to infiltrate the USA government.

Well of course, but the fact is that he went after everybody remotely linked to the American Communist Party. He did very little, however, in rooting out actual spies and Soviet agents, and rather just destroyed far-leftist sentiments in the US Democratic system to the point that they are still recovering.

McCarthy was from Wisconsin (as was I) and he was a complete freak (though I dare not draw that same correlation to myself; I'm only a partial freak).
Basically, if you're up on your standardized testing analogies, Russia and "communism" are to the 1950's what "terrorism" and anything else the government sees fit to associate with it are to the 20 oughts.
It's the common enemy that we need to be united to fight. We fought communism in the 50's by blacklisting people and buying televisions. Today we fight terrorism by keeping up with Paris Hilton's antics and paying $2.50 for a gallon of gas.
It is now as it was then. Just buy a bunch of crap and everything will be all right.

Come to Ireland, you'll meet a MC Carthy every second turn!
Google Him, there have been a few poems about him too.

Did Syliva Plath include him in a poem???? I studied for LC but can't remembe now!

Well, let's see.

Charlie McCarthy was a puppet of legendary ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, and...what? Senator Joseph McCarthy? Oh.

Nevermind!

Apologies to Gilda Radner and Emily Litella

I'm all for knowing Jenny McCarthy. Biblically, that is.

Neo-godwins law. When the left mentions McCarthy they automatically lose the argument.

I know I'm going to regret asking this, but here goes anyway, in the spirit of purest optimism:

Huh?

It's satire Int. It's taking a ludicrous concept that's a favorite of the left "Godwin's Law" and illustrating it's absurdity by reversing it. The other satire was using another favorite of the left putting "neo" in front of it.

Let me try this again, but louder:

HUH?!?

I consider myself at least SOMEwhat to the Left, and I know of neither Godwin nor his law. Instead of assuming everyone here knows what you're satirizing, how's about an explanation?

Instead of doing that, google Godwin's Law, and in the meantime, look at the pic of Jenny McCarthy.
