How many of you have seen a Nollywood film?

It's the third largest film industry in the world, with only Hollywood in America and Bollywood in India being lerger. So have you ever even heard of it? Probably not, unless you're from Nigeria. Cheap, homemade films that are filmed on a VHS camera and go straight to DVD. Nigerians don't want to go out to the movies because of the crime rate, why would you when you can watch your own country folk in the safety of your own home cheaper? Logos the capital of Nigeria is the centre for Nollywood, which produces films in about a month (pre production to release inc filming and editing) often with only one take, no costumes and few staff.

I myself have never seen a Nollywood film, but I can't wait!

Sounds... Interesting. And sad.

Sounds... Interesting. And sad.

Why sad? It creates jobs, gives hope and provides entertainment/escapeism all while being able to focus on important issues, like the 1998 smash hit I Hate My Village starring Emeka Ani as the cannibal.

I read about this in national geographic. Apparently they are not that good.

Hmm, I wonder why that could be...

A slight aside, but does anyone know why the Indian film industry is called 'Bollywood'?

It's centred in bombay, I think.

(Which would make it mollywood now I guess).

I think it's because it's centered in Bombay/Mumbai, thus the "B" at the beginning. I could be wrong.

Ah. That would make sense. Thank you.

Interesting! If there are some creative directors in Nollywood there could actually be some good stuff.

Although I'm not sure if Nollywood counts as a "film" industry, given that they don't make "films," only DVDs. I would say that the third biggest industry is probably in Hong Kong.

Yes, I saw Red Dragon. None of the movies you mention take place in an African Village I'll wager...

I've seen some post-colonial films from Africa, like one where a dude takes a second wife but can't consumate the marriage because he's trying to emulate the French that just left instead of looking out for his people. It's pretty interesting. Can't remember the name or the country, unfortunately. It's probably in my notes, but I'm not going through them for it.

With time and perhaps a bit of luck I'm sure that Nollywood movies will eventually be as good as those from Bollywood.

Bollywood is the biggest, but the second place is tight match between China, USA, Philippines and Japan. Thailand breathing on their necks. They do make a lot of films in Nigeria but it's still far behind.
(this list is of course about how many films are made in these countries)

ok, I found this link
http://www.international.ucla.edu/showevent.asp?eventid=326
"In recent years the Nigerian Film industry has grown rapidly to become the third largest film producing industry in the world after the renowned Hollywood of the United States and the prolific Bollywood of India.

With the production of over 50 movie titles per week, Nollywood..."
52*50=2600 That's insane number. I don't think you can count every single film to be part of country's film industry. Bollywood produces about 1000 movies/year and even this site says that it's bigger than Nollywood. Something in their information is not correct.

second edit: I got my list from Kristian Feigelson (sosiologist department of film studies University of Sorbonne). I'll add an URL if I can find one.

I've not heard of Nollywood till today.

Yup, and seen some movies from it..Didn't like them at all. Oops..thought you asked if anyone had seen movies from it.

What's with the "Bollywood" and "Nollywood" names? Why not create there own, if they want to show their independence from Hollywood's realm? (Not an insult, mind, but simple curiousity)
