Pre-Calculus

I just finished Geometry (yay, 93% with an A) for my freshman year in high school. Because I saw this girl I love sign up for the class, I signed up for an Algebra 2/Pre-Cal class for my sophomore year.

Basically, Algebra 2 crammed into one semester, Pre-Calculus crammed into one semester. That's two yearlong classes crammed into one year. Yay. Honours class, so I get extra GPA points. More yay.

But I'm a tad scared. I left 8th grade with a C in Algebra 1. That C was only there because I worked my ass off in the final month with extra credit. I didn't understand a bit of Algebra at all. I died by the time we worked on quadratic forumulas.

So I'm wondering, is Pre-Calculus anything like Algebra 1 at all? I do better at algebra now, but still.

Precalc is all about trigonometry. sine, cosine tangent and all that stuff.

Precalculus draws on Algebra andTrigonometry primarily, but a rather considerable amount of it involves topics covered in Algebra 2; if you take Algebra 2 first it will be much easier. Geometry helps especially if you covered trig in it.

Also: Never take a math course for a girl, it will likely end up in "difficulties" (unless you sat next to someone like me, whose favorite class was math)

Well....I kicked ass in the trig part of Geometry. So I shouldn't worry as much then?

You should do okay. I don't remember if you start derivatives in Precalc, but simple derivatives are easy crap.

I'll give you all the answers if you give me your claim to the Earth, and a 1/4 share in your soul.

Eh, I'm good.

No, unless you have a very poor knowledge of algebra, you should be alright. Most of the topics from Algebra 2 are reviewed in Pre Calc.

If you have trouble, feel free to post questions on the board; I'll help when I can.

I think it's may be better not to chose classes based on who's in them, but rather to go and ask this woman out. If she's not interested, that's unfortunate, but you can look for someone else. If she is interested, great! Then not being in the same class is probably an advantage. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all. Don't make the mistake of trying to be her friend first before you ask her out, because then it can seem like you were only trying to be her friend because you wanted romance. It can make your friendship look like a con job and is a big turn off.

I found Pre-Calculus to be somewhat daunting myself, because at the time I did not understand function based math or derivatives. But it is actually very easy. Since then I have taken Calculus 1-3 as well. If you should need any help, feel free to telegramme me or one of the other math guys on the board. I actually had to write solvers for algebraic expresssions in C, so I'm very familiar with many of them. But the quadratic expression is a great tool (c^2 = a^2 + b^2 ) as long as you remember that c is always the hypotenuse, i.e. long diagonal leg, and it only works on triangles with a right angle.

Algebra is a beautiful thing. When you remember how to do it!!

Hey Colodia I'm going into Pre-Calc too (Jr yr). Maybe we can bail each other's grades out, if necessary.

This thread does not make me feel good. Through no fault of anyone here, but I have my Mathematics exam next Monday morning... :(

Well, I've finished with Maths for good now. Which is a real pity, because I loved it to bits.

I know not the (I'm assuming American) system, so I can't help you one bit.

There, aren't you happy I shared that with you?

i just finished pre-calc this year, the math is easy, the concepts are a bit harder, i had the worst teacher at my school though so i learned nothing, goo luck with the chick (hot chix > math)

What if you asked the girl for help? Made a study group with her. That way you'd be with her and still learn the maths. I must also admit that my favorite class is maths.

Well, this is coming from a guy who failed geometry sophomore year, but I hear pre-calc is hell. Take statistics. It's just calculators and dicking around as far as I could tell.
