Airbase hosts 1st military gay marriage

Yes boys and girls, you're not high, you're not drunk, you are reading the whole and proper title.

Airbase hosts 1st military gay marriage (http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/06/14/militarygaywedding0614.html)

Two men were married in the chapel at Nova Scotia's Greenwood airbase in May, in what's being called the Canadian military's first gay wedding.

Lt.-Cmdr. David Greenwood, the base's head chaplain, said a sergeant and a warrant officer were married May 3 in front of about 45 guests.

"This couple had been waiting a very long, long time," said Greenwood, declining to give their names because he hadn't asked for permission.

In September, the Nova Scotia Supreme Court ruled that banning same-sex marriages is unconstitutional, effectively changing the definition of marriage in the province to "the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others."

The military has said it's willing to host gay weddings in jurisdictions where it's legal.

Here is the first part of the article from CBC.

The small neo-conservativism movment here in Canada will be frothing at the mouth and waving their placards in no time declaring that this is an abomination and a sin etc...

But I say - go Canada! Sexual orientation means nothing in the face of love and justice. Who are we to deny someone the right to marry the person they love just because they are gay? It doesn't change our lives. It however, changes theirs for the better because they now have the same right as the heterosexual population.

Currently, same-sex marriages performed in seven provinces and one territory are legal and must be recognized. Same-sex marriages are not performed in Alberta, New Brunswick, P.E.I., Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, but the Nunavut government will recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.

For a moment, I was being all US-centric and thought you were talking about the US military!
I was thinking "Well fuck me, did somebody spike my coffee?"

Anyway, that's great. A step forwards for civil rights and such.

I'd give it a B+ for civil rights. I still don't see why government should get to decide what makes a marriage valid in the first place.

wtf?

a couple of fudge-packers were given a piece of paper that forces us to aknowledge the existance of their relationship instead of allowing us to ignore and/or condemn them? How could this happen?

Shit - suddenly EVERYONE can get an equal crack at these pieces of paper. That makes no fucking sense at all! I mean, suddenly this means that my piece of paper is no better than theirs, which - in effect - means that I'm not any more special than them?

This cannot possibly be true can it?

This is an abomination. An indication in the decline in our moral fabric that we recognize these fruitcakes rather than simply spitting on them like the good old days.

And god will surely punish us for it.

There will be plagues of miniature locusts wiping out our pubic hairs - just you wait an see. Indeed, He will probably show us the depth of His anger with our actions by inflicting upon us the worst fucking punishment that He can concieve for us!

For fuck's sake, He'll probably go so far as to make the Leafs win the cup!

Frankly, that's more punishment that I could possibly bear!

youre new, i dont know your political views, so how am i meant to know how serious youre being?

the main problem is there are many people on here who do actually think like that...so when someone says it its more than possible to believe they are being serious if you dont know their views.

What's worrying in when people say that NationStates posters are more intelligent than people they're used to. More worrying is the fact that it's probably true.

I agree.

Many years ago, people considered interracial marriages in the same light as gay marriages, attaching a stigma to it, and now it is unconstitutional to prevent it. I think we may see some nations making a turn in this direction as more people push for equal rights in thsi area.

The idea of the Leafs winning the Cup truly is the most nauseating thought on the planet to me! Torontonians were fucking insufferable enough when the Jays won the Series. You'd almost think that there was a Canadian on the team the way they went on about how all of those Americans and Domincans made them better than the rest of Canada. The Leafs winning the cup? I shudder at the thought. Their fucking heads would swell until they caused massive traffic jams on the Don Valley Parkway due to their sudden inability to pass each other without banging into each other's foreheads.....

I'd rather the fucking Cup stayed in Florida in perpetuity than THAT!

Get out of my thread! How dare you say such things about Torontonians! You know nothing about us! You're making extremely broad generalisations and I for one do NOT feel in the mood to tolerate such bigotry!

And the DVP is already a bloody parking lot with traffic jams, so do your bloody research before you start in with such allegations! You do not know anything about the people from Toronto.

Sure we'd love for the Leafs to win, that's be great but that doesn't mean we'll have swelled heads! Maybe a sense of swelled civic pride (and an urge to tell the folk from Ottawa that the Sens truly do suck and we have proof).

Now stay out of my threads until you can contribute something productive!

Your objection is overruled on the grounds of unsufficient evidence. You have no idea where I do live or have lived.

And I'm sorry, but Toronto is a city of self-righteous whimps that drag down the rest of the country in terms of most things that matter. Can we all remember Mayor Mel whining for the military to come in and help clean up "the disaster" after a few inches of snow fell while the rest of Eastern Canada was harder hit by the weather and shrugged it off, shoveled it out, and got on with their lives with no problem?

Boy did we all find that pathetic....

The Bruins are undefeated this season! They're going all the way!

And I think Massachusetts as a state has very little control over whether the military performs gay marriages in the state. I think it's an entirely different entity.

I didn't live here at the time, and yes, it is stupid, however, that still doesn't give you the right to make broad-sweeping statements about Toronto. You don't know where I've lived besides here (since I have lived elsewhere in Canada).

The reason for the military intervention was due to the lack of sufficiant equipment and not because we're wimps. If you don't have the tools, you have to ask for help. We have the tools now, but at the time, they didn't.

I would hardly consider Toronto chalked full of self-righteous douches. Every city and town in Canada has their fair share of people like this; Toronto isn't the only one.

You accuse me of having insufficiant evidence, when you yourself have what you dare accuse me of.

You know, for people who run and whine to the Mods about people making a generalization about Torontonians, you sure don't mind generalizing about the rest of Eastern Canada.

There is a word for that in the dictionary.

I haven't complained to the Mods about your generalizations about Torontonians. Its your opinion, you can have it. If you want to share it, fine, doesn't mean I have to accept it. It goes both ways. No one ever asked you to agree with my generalization about Easterners. Doesn't change the fact that people back home are 95% of the time much friendlier and open than people east of Kenora. The funny thing is, your average Torontonian wasn't born in Toronto, or even Canada.

Its all good. I'm perhaps little too sensitive to being accused of things I didn't do. Makes me take things too personal from time time.

Complaining to the Mods about someones opinion about a city they have lived in seems to be stretching it a little bit really. Personaly, I enjoyed living in Toronto during my college years. I actually found Toronto to be little more friendly than the rest of Southern Onscario, and definitely more open minded. But I went to OCAD (art college) so my social cirlce was far from average to begin with.
