World music!

Yes...... You know what I refer to. The music closely tied with one particular ethnicity or culture, that often doesn't find its way onto mainstream radio.
Does anyone have a particular interest in world music? Listen to it frequently? and just to be mean, I have decided that common western musical types such as rock, pop, classical, etc are not to be permitted. Why? Because in the shops they have their own genre, and world music tends to be limited to a wee pile at the side. Whilst this barbaric practice remains in place I'm just kidding here, peeps. Or am I?
I will not include western music in with world. Such is my booming edict. No, on second thought, any western based music that gets dumped into the "world music" section is fine.
So anyway. I'm a big fan of Gamelan, since I love percussion. You get such a feeling of strength through it. I'm also a huge fan of Salsa music. Anything that's really lively, I like. It doesn't need to have a specific message, just an emotion, a raw feeling poured into it. I also really like tribal music from around the world, whether it's Indian, Mongolian throat singing (I believe this is called Tuvan but I may be incorrect), Tibetan (who practice Tuvan), African, or from anywhere. Like I said, I just love it if it's ALIVE.
Does anyone else appreciate music of this nature?

Wait! What if you live in Thailand? Then Western music would be World music... mmmh...
Anyway, I like salsa and mambo. Even took dance lessons. Some African rythms I also like, although I don't know much about them.

Being a drummer, I absolutely love Gamelan, but lately I've been listening to a lot of Bhangra and Indipop.
B21 was one of my favorites (they broke up last I've heard).
I love Spanish music, of many genres. Some of my favourite genres include:
Nueva Cancion/Nueva Trova (Victor Jara, Silvio Rodriguez etc)
Cumbias/Merengues (Carlos Vives, Los Hermanos Rosarios etc.)
Musica Andina (Illapu, Inti-illimani, Sisa Pacari etc)
Coplas/Bagualas/Zambas (Atahualpa Yupanqui, Quelentaro, Jorge Cafrune etc)
Rancheros/Boleros (Ana Gabriel, Amparo Ochoa, Lucho Barrios)
Old-style Flamenco...not so much the new style, though I love Paco de Lucia
I love hip-hop in other languages (I mean, not all...) like:
La Mala (Spain)
Los Orishas (Cuba)
Manau (France)
and so on...

I do, but I have yet to actually purchase world music CDs. I'm not exactly sure where to start with.
I've like what I've heard of Indian classical music (with the raga thing), and what I've heard of some African music, particularly the West African stuff wtih the complex, polyphonic beats.
I've also heard some good Westernized music produced by other countries, like Thai and Chinese pop. I also like J-rock and J-pop, when it's not annoying.

aha, conundrum. I'm selfish and they can deal with it somehow :D
yay for salsa fan! the only problem with me and world music is that I rarely know the name of a piece. makes it difficult to track down. Forces you to expand your tastes, however. I have the same problem with classical, however. But that's not the topic!
Moroccan music, ey? Hrm.... I'll have to check it out. Same as all the spanish music. Especially flamenco. Everyone loves flamenco.

I like Gamelan, and not just because it reminds me of the ewoks making a percussion instrument out of stormtrooper helmets.

Are you sure?

I'll have to look into what you suggested Umlilo, sounds interesting.
Eriadhin: I like quite a bit of that, I think I was jaded by PE in my school, where all the formal dances of that kind of music was a requirement. The embarassment is what I'm reminded of now!

Well, no.
Actually, I like the way Gamelan music treats rhythm so much more importantly than in most Western music, it gives motives to rhythm to create melodies without relying on voice-emulation or harmony. Plus, I want to make a xylophone out of Ewok bones.
There's a great Phillipino band called Medyo Modern although it is unlikely you will find them in any store.
Carlos Vives is Colombian. Very eclectic although his main influence is Vallenatos.
Mana is a Mexican rock band. They are huge in Latin America.
Juanes also Colombian. More pop rock than Carlos Vives. He did a duet called "Fotografia" with Canadian pop star Nelly Furtado.
Some years ago there was a movie that featured Cuban musicians called "Buena Vista Social Club" Eladio Ochoa is amazing in it. So is Ibrahim Ferrer.
Late greats. Celia Cruz and Compay Segundo
I like this song (http://www.duke.edu/~cpw/Las Canciones Cubanos.mp3), and this one too (http://www.duke.edu/~cpw/K'antu.mp3).

I love traditional Indian music. To me it somehow illustrates the human experience perfectly. Ravi and Anoushka Shankar have some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.

I had entertained the notion of becoming an ethno-musicologist and I was a buyer at a record store, so I got a lot of world music. Some of the gems where Taraf de Haiduks, a collection of Franco-Canadian folk music, Spanish Bagpipes, and some Australian Aboriginal music. There is a big Gamelon program here at the school I just graduated from (without a ethno-musicology degree....:(), so I get a lot of that live.
Calypso and Carribean is pretty cool. Another tangential intrest of mine turned up this (http://ragtimewest.com/Mpeg/ShakeSenora.mpg). How cool is that? I want one. I have a pretty broad selection. No doubt there are things missing, but I've covered a fair amount of the globe.
I listen to some J-pop, but not much else in terms of world music.

...has a world music program I'm a big fan of. The Nordic folk groups are great. Also Natacha Atlas, Leahy, Anjelique Kidjo...
