I was re-reading Bulfinch's mythology and since it has some of the myths men created, I wondered which do you prefer, could it be a great Zeus and Hades, or perhaps the Gotterdammerung (Ragnarok), or the great sun god Ra?

Feel free to comment, personally i think Norse mythology is the best

The Silmarillion was written to address the dearth of a truly British mythology, so I am voting for Tolkien's works. All we need now is for a huge global disaster to smite us, and then after the stories get passed down by word of mouth for a few thousand years we'll be in business.

Well, Christian mythology is pretty far out there...but I'd have to say Nordic is more creative and fun to read about.

Personally I like almost every mythology.

From Heracles and Cocomama, to Toyotama and Quetzalcoatl, to the Tuatha-De-Danann and Shiva, to Gao Yao and Odin, to Fontus and Asherah, to Ekchuah and Set, to the Wendigo and Pamba, to Sedna and nagas, to Uluru and Aotearaoa, to Hina and Mithra, to Adad and..well, I think you get the picture.

Apart from writing, mythology is my favorite subject.

Heracles-Greek
Cocmama-Incan
Toyotana-Japanese
Quetzalcoatl-Aztec
Tuatha-De-Danann-Irish
Shiva-Hindu
Gao Yao-Chinese
Odin-Norse
Fontus-Roman
Asherah-Hebrew
Ekchuah-Mayan
Set-Egyptian
the Wendigo-Native American
Pamba-Ovambo
Sedna-Inuit
nagas-Tibetan
Uluru-Australian Aborigine
Aotearoa-Maori
Hina-Hawaiian
Mithra-Persian
Adad-Sumerian

What's so special about the spirit of the rock?
Why didn't you name the Rainbow Snake? That's much cooler....

I'm a nordic person myself. I like them all, but the Ragnarok must be one of the coolest things around.
You would spell it Götterdämmerung though, or if you don't have an ö or ä: Goetterdaemmerung.

I was just going for examples...if I was going by the coolest ones, I would have gone with Hades, Osiris, the World-Snake/dragon who's name I forget(Jormangund?), Medusa, the Rainbow Snake, etcetera etcetera etcetera

I've got them on my keyboard, it's still from Germany and I never bothered to get a new one. So my Z is where your Y is and vice versa, and I've got all the Umlauts.
If you wanna make them, you might have to look up the ASCII Key for it. Then you press a certain key (i forget which one), press the numbers for the ASCII and the sign should appear. any sign.

It also gives me the ability to make great emoticons:

I guess it depends on your point of view. A lot of people people consider myth to be what isn't practiced anymore...

others dismiss anything that isn't their religion as myth...

Of course mythology is generally used to describe a body of religious works and ideas.
i.e. The Illiad and the Odyssy are part of Greek mythology, along with the Greek pantheon of gods, and various other stories written from that time

this can be applied to modern religions too.

God and the Bible and angels and The Trinity and Mary and such could be called the Christian mythology.

Of the greek gods the only two I ever really liked were Artemis and Hephaestus. The rest are entirely too childish for my taste. Of the Norse gods, my favorites are Balder and Loki, just a tad bit of irony there.

I never really liked Zeus.

Incestuous, horny, ol' lightninged bastard...

Hades wasn't really childish, jealous and greedy, I'll agree with.

Poseidon...what can you say about that "my wrath shall rain upon you"....now HE was childish...

Hera...jealous housewifey b*tch

Most of the female goddesses were full of themselves...if they weren't causing gods to drag mortals into divine affairs...coughERIScough

Well, while I've been meaning to learn more about Norse mythology for a while (what little I do know fascinates me), I don't know enough to really say it is my favorite.

I'll say Greek, even though all mythology is pretty damn cool. :)

Norse Mythology rocks the house. Thor going down and smacking thurs, Fenrir biting off Tyr's hand, Loki mating with Angrbotha to produce the ragnarok wolf crew... (how does that work? :p )

Anyway, it's awesome.

I have a tie between Celtic Mythology and Aztec Mythology :)

The Celts were awesome (and my ancestors) Stonehenge rocks. etc.

Aztecs had a huge complex mythology as well (not to mention mathmatics to go along with it)

I love the Greek mythologies, but I also love some of the old Irish/Celtic myths, like Oisin and Tir na nOg, I love going somewhere and the tour guide tells you all about the myths and legends associated with the place. There's a glacial lake in the moutains about 20 miles away from where I live, it's called the Devils Punchbowl, or Coomshingaun (as gaeilge). Legend has it that while St. Patrick was chasing the Devil out of Ireland, the Devil passed through the mountains and scooped up this huge chunk of land and dropped it in the sea just off the coast. The small island was sparsely populated with farmers up until the turn of the 20th century, when they were moved off the island when the church believed that the land was touched with evil and the farmers would turn to satanic ways if they were allowed stay there. There was a TV documentary on the island, the place if full of the woolie descendants of the sheep the farmers used to keep there....

Well, that was his original goal (Read the Book of Lost Tales and you'll see what I mean - dear old Tol Eressea was originally none other than Great Britain) but he got a bit, shall we say, sidetracked. It's still very British in flavour, though.

And I'd vote for it.

?? It's ironic because Loki sets up Balder to die. Has nothing to do with his being childish. And he was much less so than many of the greek gods.

I'm a big fan of Greek mythology in general, but I like the Nibelungenlied a lot too. It just has this heroic flair to it that cumulates in a massacre at what is assumed to be Attila the Hun's wedding... Plus some of the magical treasures featured in the legend are simply classical...

Hard question. I read quite many national epics + other old mythologies few years ago and all of them are interesting. I'll be nationalistic and say Finnish mythology and our national epic Kalevala.

A light version of Finnish gods, pretty funny actually

Huh, it's a difficult one for sure. I really approve of Set, and the Egyptian pantheon, which is a little bloated weighing in at about 3000 assorted deities, and it does feature my overall favourite god(ess in this case), Isis. But I just know more about the Greek and the Norse tales, Freyja and the dwarfs, the tales of the Titans, arachne, the labyrinth, all of that.

And Ragnarok. What is cooler than Ragnarok?
