Or it could be that the lives of Hollywood people are so empty of meaning, so unreal, that they turn to quack religions for comfort.

The annoying thing is I can't think of a bad movie he's been in. He might be a bit crazy with scientology but he gives of the impression of being a really nice person so I don't have a problem with him

Its not because of his religion that I dislike him, I've just never ever taken to him. No particular reason.

eyes wide shut.... a utterly horrible movie that only got press because it was kubricks last.

far and away, not the worst movie but it bombed big time at the box office.

plus about 25 others that were all good to excellent. (ok cocktail was formulaic but cruise still owned the screen)

If she loves him that much maybe she chose to make the change.

I don't know if I could change to someone else's religion for love but if someone did it for me then I couldn't really realise what they have done for me and the sacrifice that they have made and in a way I'd always be in awe of them the fact they could do that for someone.

It was started by someone who said, (paraphrasing here) "The real money is to be made in religion."

It's also full of pseudo-mystical bullshit, and to call it a religion is an insult to all the other religions, even the ones that practiced human sacrifice.

Well if you listen to Tom, Scientology has technology that cures dyslexia. I am one myself. Also, post pardom depression is cured by taking vitamins.

First off, read up on the Placebo effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placebo_effect) and Psychosomatic illness. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychosomatic_illness)

The general idea is that a large amount of our problems are purely psychological (think obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, drug dependence, etc, etc) and as such can be cured or resolved mentally. Scientology essentially goes to rich people with problems and promises them a "cure" to their problems. As they go through the "levels" of Scientology you are gradually broken into the "pseudo-mystical bullshit" until they genuinely, deeply, believe it. Through hypnosis and psychological manipulations, they advance until their mind is altered to such a degree as to overcome whatever the problem is. The effect is VERY similar to what the occult (think Aleister Crowley, who's work Hubbard was involved in), Voodoo, Shamanism, etc, etc in that it uses the power of suggestion to the degree that your mind makes the effect real.

From what I understand, few things are as effective as Scientology for getting people off drugs cold turkey. I would imagine that sort of success would certainly make a person grateful for it.

It is "pseudo-mystical bullshit" by all means, however it DOES work just so long as you believe it.

I certainly wouldn't expect you to, I haven't. The ability to entertain an idea or belief without blindly accepting or discarding it is a rather rare but extremely valuable ability.

Most formal religions also don't make it a habit (in modern times at least) to try and destroy the lives of their outspoken and prominent critics or the lives of their apostates.

Many people claim that and yet go to a non-denomination church. Doesn't that make it a denomination?

I don't go to any church, one of the reasons I'm not a Catholic is that I don't believe a priest should stand between you and God. I try to find my own way.

I don't see the problem with Scientology at all, it's just another religion. Religion completely sucks, people take it to ridiculous extremes (the name of which will remain nameless) to the extent of killing each other over a hokey myth that has never been substantiated and probably never will. it makes me laugh sometimes. what is interesting about scientology is that it seems to be the most modern and up-to-date one, consequently in touch with modernist views of freedom, respect and a desire for non existent crime.

just a thought... :headbang:

Everyone assumes that she's doing it for Tom... what if she's doing it simply because she has come to truly believe in the precepts of Scientology?

Hard to believe?

Or suing the pants off of random people on the internet who make comments about them.

Like I said, we should all be careful if we don't want a quick cease and desist order and an impending lawsuit against Max Barry and any poster whose information they can obtain.

"Leukaemia is evidently psychosomatic in origin", LOL. Weirdo cult.

EDIT:

“When somebody enrols, consider he or she has joined up for the duration of the universe - never permit an ‘open-minded’ approach... If they enrolled, they’re aboard, and if they’re aboard they’re here on the same terms as the rest of us - win or die in the attempt. Never let them be half minded about being Scientologists... When Mrs. Pattycake comes to us to be taught, turn that wandering doubt in her eye into a fixed, dedicated glare… The proper instruction attitude is, ‘We'd rather have you dead than incapable.’”

- L. Ron Hubbard, KEEPING SCIENTOLOGY WORKING, 7 February 1965, reissued 27 August 1980

Goodbye Katie Holmes. You were OK in Dawson's Creek. Until Series 3. :(
