If anything, a specific person can be classified as liberal or conservative - by the real, original meanings of wanting progress or wanting stability - on specific issues, and can /sometimes/ be classed as one or the other in general, if a lot of their ideas happen to be that way. But as a group? No, except in extreme, cult-like situations where they really /do/ all have the same ideas, mindset and what have you)

Even if there aren't any overmind-controlled "groups" out there, can we agree that there are such things as liberalism, conservatism, etc? These are ideologies from which people pick and choose (redundant phrase, I know) what their convictions are - even if they don't pick all of them, or if their choice is heavily influenced by upbringing or coercion.

How is that supposed to work then? You believe something, but then claim that this belief does not identify you as part of that group that believe this.

The left does exist.

It is not a homogenous group with everyone holding all the same beliefs, but it is a group defined by a belief about one aspect of life, that that the society in general is prior to the individual.

Likewise the right exists, in respect of being that group of people that believe that the individual is prior to the society. Equally they are not homogenous, except in respect to this belief.

Like it or not, we categorise the world. We do not look at a person and see that person. We see a gender, we see a race, we see tall or short, we see fat or thin. We do not see the individual, we see an intersection between many different categorisations. The same applies to the expressed beliefs of people. We see left or right, we see freedom or authoritarina, we see progressive or traditionalist. Then we define the person's beliefs by the intersection of these binary judgements. And guess what, complaining about it is not going to make people stop doing it. Even knowing it is this way and trying not to act on these lines, you still keep right on make the same type of yes no, up down, black white decisions.
