Females on the Internet?!?

I know I may sound more than a little bit naive by saying this, but it's really hard for me to picture anyone who posts on forums to be a woman.

Perhaps it's because no women in my area seem to be interested in being anywhere near computers, but it seems foreign to me that women spend much time on them.

There's nothing fundamental about women that prevents them from enjoying conversing with others over the internet.

I know that, and that's what I was trying to get across with the last part of the post. I know there's no good reason for my surprise, but I feel it anyway.

I'm mostly just wondering if anyone has the same sort of twisted perception of the users of the Internet.

Well the ratio of guys to girls is so high that it's easy to assume all posters are male, but the legend of the female computer user is true.

What is wrong with where you live?

*is a girl*
*is online*
*knows some very basic programming crap... well... I used to*

*Has a stupid number of posts and wastes too much time here*

Though to be fair, if my computer ran the sims2, I would spend most of my time playing that instead of sitting here.

I always thought it odd how so much of the regional invasion/defence community are female. It is supposed to be after all, the most dry, nerdy part of the game.

And yet...

Well part of it might be the fact that you never hear about the female internet pedophiles, rapists, and child pornographers and such.

The internet sexual offender is usually portrayed as a middle-aged white guy. They keep telling you to watch out for people like that, so you begin to suspect that people you meet are one of these people(after you get to know them, that probably goes away, but the impression is still in your mind). I guess over time people begin to link the internet user with men...

At least, that's a theory...I guess.

You must not have poster details turned on. You won't find too many guys w/ pink signatures and callsigns like 'uberspamqueen'. ;)

As for there not being too many female computer users near you, a lot of people use private computers to post stuff to the internet (home desktops, laptops) so it'd be hard to know for sure.

The men I know who wander around the internet spend a lot less time on forums then I do, they generally look at gaming/music/random flash animations/webcomics, you'll find more women then men on forums generally(not nessessarily here, but women use the internet more as a tool for communication whereas men use it for entertainment </generalisation>.

Well, that would be because women tend to be far more creative and better story tellers. However, I too know of no female in my area who I would even for a second think would post on a forum like this. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that women form tighter social circles much easier than we men and thus tend not to do much unorthodox communicating.

The Sims 2 (while I love it) is frequently considered a stereotypical girl game.

Me, I enjoy almost all video/PC games, except Barbie, Mary Kate and Ashley, and all that girlie crap plus Leisure Larry and Playboy Mansion type games. One of my favorite games of all time is Mortal Combat, which may very well be the DEFINITION of the fighter genre.

I think it's the fact that we never meet anyone like that in real life.

I'm not a gamer. I'm just broke and never have anything to do.

I have never even participated in a RPG. Well, once, kinda. I don't think it was a game so much as one of my friends invited me along for some role playing adventure thing. I don't think I'm good at it.

I think that's more society than anything else that keeps a girl from just blurting out that one of her hobbies is "browsing the forums of (insert name of site here)". However, my mom doesn't care. She makes it well known to all her friends that she spends a huge portion of her day online/on her laptop.

Amen to that one. At least, such was the case until I met my current girlfriend. She plays both Warcraft and Unreal Tournament online- something I had yet to experience on a personal level with any girl I know. Some quite possibly occasionally played a single game, often RPG's. This sort of thing nearly happened to me, actually.

There was this cute Irish girl living in my halls this year, and early on we were talking about what sort of stuff we do at a party. She was a textiles/fashion student, a type which posters in the UK would recognise as a bunch of vain air-heads. However, she said she worked in the city centre branch of Game.

Now as the name suggests, Game is a big chain of computer game stores. So I was like "Woo!" and asked her how she got into all that. She said she had worked at one for a couple of years in Ireland, and the company transferred her job when she took up studies here.

So what did I do? I asked a question about graphics card driver compatibility issues. It turned out she didn't actually know anything about games or computers, all she did was read barcodes at the till. :(

I think you can imagine what a conversation-stopper that was. Way to make a first impression. :(

In my opinion, fighting, shooters, simulations, puzzlers, and strategy games all tend to start looking like others within their genre if you've played enough. I've seen several RPGs which were different and original compared to others within the same genre. I like that, but I don't know if I actually communicated my thoughts in a way that made sense there or not. :p

I'm both an internet addict and a vagina-owner/operator. I spend my online time reading and discussing. I like some RPG and strategy games, but I usually spend my time on small puzzle games where I can burn up my superfluous mental energy while pondering concurrent spurts of vitreole.

AoE is probably my most favourite game ever. I spend way more time on the NationStates forum, though, because I find that hiding in a game can isolate me from events that are happening right now.

I used to chat heaps on paltalk in the social issues category, but I feel that it's become such a haven of racial and religious bigots that some of the rooms on there make me physically sick.

I ought to be swatting up for my exam tomorrow. Panic. Guilt.

Nice line. :) And great choice of words.

Yeah, AoE is good. Haven't played in ages though... It's yet another one of the discs that has successfully managed to disappear off the face of the earth into the void that is my room. lol :p

Well, we have the religious bouts here every now and then (seems to be that the topic periodically cycles and eventually gets back to this).

I ought to be swatting up for my exam tomorrow. Panic. Guilt.

The scary thing is, that's WAAAY too familiar. That was pretty much me a week ago. Just replace "swatting up for my exam" for "have an assignment due".

As it turned out I pulled it off and finished the assignment in one day. Then again, this was for Management of Organisations, easily the most useless and redundant TAFE module on the Australian continent.

I mean, the thing had a 25-question MULTIPLE CHOICE examination as it's "final". I mean, please. 1 hour to do it, I finished it in about half that, if not less.

I'm supposed to have a Comm law exam on Thursday, but I'm not going to bother. I've already failed the subject anyway (missed a class assessment) :p. I'll do the module next year. Properly.

I know I may sound more than a little bit naive by saying this, but it's really hard for me to picture anyone who posts on forums to be a woman.

Perhaps it's because no women in my area seem to be interested in being anywhere near computers, but it seems foreign to me that women spend much time on them.
I know what you mean. And then i get really jealous when I find out someones a woman. hahaha

You must not have poster details turned on. You won't find too many guys w/ pink signatures and callsigns like 'uberspamqueen'. ;)

My favourite title is "Semi-Pro Sp@mpig"!

Come on guys, when was the last time you asked a girl about her interests and heard "online gaming" in response? It just doesn't happen.
That's because nobody actually admits to something so nerdy as being an online gamer.

hmm..

I'm female

WTF? All this time I have thought you were male!

Everyone should be like Ashmoria and me, and just put FEMALE or MALE in the Location spot.

Part of the problem is the use of the word "female" as a noun instead of "woman". That idiom clearly marks you as someone sufficiently lacking in social skills as to be assumed to be a basement-swelling Internet junkie. There's nothing wrong with that, but you can't be expected to be taken seriously by any women you DO meet if you insist on using terminology that makes you sound like a zookeeper.

Just a thought.

wow, since when is the computer girlie a myth? I am girl, I surf online from whenever I get up to whenever I get kicked off the comp, and so do most of my friends. I like to play games online, some of them are very violent, and I enjoy them. why should the fact that chicks like me exist be such a big surprise? If you have trouble believing we exist, get off your comp for a while and see if your off-line lady friends spend time online. either you're gonna find there's a lot of us, or you live in a really weird area.

Hopefully people can tell by my nations name that I'm female. If they're too clueless to figure it out, tough luck.
