Favorite Strategy Games?

The Noble Men

Simple really, what is your favorite Real Time and Turn Based Strategy Games?

Also, what's the ones you don't really like?

Favorite RTS: Empire Earth; The Art of Conquest. Just for it's sheer timescale. It's also the best for a defensieve player, like me.

Favorite TBS: Advance Wars. Purely because it's fun.

Least Favorite RTS: Alexander. A poor imitation of Cossacks. Which I've never really liked

Least Favorite TBS: Pawn. A freeware chess game that was pretty boring, and done nothing to improve the game of a begginer.

Favourite RTS-Dawn Of War. Not least because I am a huge 40K fan, but also due to the great graphics and quick, furious gameplay.

Favourite TBS-Civilisation3. Sorry to be so boring, but still, what a game.

Other good ones include the C&C series, the Age of Empires Series (excluding "Age of Mythology") and Crusader Kings.

But both types are eqaully good at waht they do. I find RTS more strategic-you need to think quickly.

Turn based.
Risk! Yay!
Seriously though - I do prefer turn based, Civ 2 probably being my favourite.

favourite RTS: Red Alert series (1 & 2), Starcraft

favourite TBS: the Total War series (edit: i play more & am more of a master at the map-screen strategy than the battles themselves (usually just auto em ;)) so its more of a TBS to me)

both types rock

Favorite RTS: The Command & Conquer series (when done by Westwood) Story, strategy, poor acting.

Favorite TBS: The Civilization series

You aren't boring. Civ 3 is a very good game, from what I've heard.

Never actually bought it, I'm content with Civ 2 for now.

RTS are my favorites because they're more realistic. They don't give you "turns" in the middle of a battle. :p

Fave RTS: Starcraft

The only real TBS I've ever played was the Civilization series. Quite fun but nothing compared to Starcraft.

What's wrong with that? At least it means that you've got a chance to defend yourself against the massive enemy onslaught. RTS, however, takes you by surprise.

Isn't Rise of Nations the RTS equivalent of Civilization?

And timing when you take a shit, holding or answering your calls one-handed, never sleeping, etc whoever wins is whoever can keep that little thing called "real life" from intruding.

Which is why RTS games have a "save" or "pause" feature.

I prefer the classic grand-daddy - Go (aka Igo, Wei Chi, or Paduk).

Elegant strategy in black and white.

I can like Cossacks... I mainly just don't get it.
Cossacks two was pretty damned appalling though.

My favourite RTS is the Total realism mod for Rome: Total war. Complete improvement in every way. It's the best, no argument.

As for Turn based games, I'm really bad at them, so I'll go with the one I can win. MONOPOLY.
The Noble Men

Monopoly kicks some serious arse!

I've always wanted to play it with real money, like everyone else.

I'm not a fan of RTS, I play them but they don't impress me as much.

Except for the Total War series, I have never played a RTS game that didn't devolve into a click-fest.

The thing about RTS being realistic though... I'm not so sure. You can send out commands and have them carried out a lot faster than real-life would allow.

Unless the Romans had two-way radios. You never know though, they were trixy bastards.

True, but it balances out by allowing EVERYONE to have it. So there's no real advantage. and the battles would be boring if you needed to plan it all beforehand and could only make tiny changes mid battle.

Favorite RTS: Command & Conquer (both the original and Red Alert series, as well as the sequels such as Tiberian Sun), Star Craft

I don't play enough computer games to have a least favorite RTS, and I'm not familiar with any TBS.

Except Risk, which I love even though I get pwned every time I play.

Hmm...are we talking exclusively "strategy" where you build an empire/economy, or does the definition include squad level games like the X-com series and military strategy games like Panzer General and Steel Panthers? If we're talking exclusively the former...

RTS- Warcraft 2 (still the classic), Starcraft and the Total War series.

TBS- Civilization. Nothing can ever match it. :) Warhammer 40k: Final Liberation was pretty fun though.

But...Hearts of Iron, Victoria and Europa Universalis deserve mention and much praise. They are absolutely brilliant games that have the strategic scope of a traditional TBS title...but they're actually real-time (though the clock can be slowed and this is essential). I think the TBS genre will be phased out and replaced with this model.

As for worst...I remember playing many atrocious RTS games back in the day...I can't remember any specifics as they were unbelievably numerous.

i mean the campaign & map is the game. the battles are just tools... awesome, great looking tools and brilliant RTS skirmishes of course, but the main game is TBS damnit

That's the whole point. Gives you more reason to get your ass in gear right off the bat and make sure you don't get overwhelmed when the hordes come at you. :)

Also, I'm DEFINITELY not awake this morning. When people were talking about TBS, I forgot about board games.

Fave TBS: Chess and Risk

Fav RTS has to be Dawn of War.

Fair point, but I spend more time in the battle segments. I like carefully calculated attacks. :D

Rts: Total War Series, Stronghold 1&2, Blizzard strat games.

Tbs: Civ & other Sid Meier's (Like Alpha Centauri).

I kinda like both, but has it's advantages, of course Real Time is more fun, because you get to enjoy the chaos of battle, thousands of soldiers marching down the hill attacking all at the same time, and people dropping like flies.

Time Based, mostly fun for building economies, seeing things grow.Slowly planning things out to defeat the enemy.

RTS faves are Dawn of War, Homeworld and Rome Total War. All of them own

TBS I like Fire Emblem and (I know someone will hammer me for this) Rites of War.

Rome is something of a fusion of styles which makes it really good to play.

I agree with Kanabia... the RTS section is the real part of Rome. The turn based is cool and all, but it just isn't as in-depth as most other turn based. It's like 70/30 RTS/turn based.

fair enough. i play far more in the map mode... like a big ol' game of chess & strategy. i usually can't be bothered with the battles and just auto-calculate em cos it detracts from my thinking on the campaign map ;)

Dawn of War is great. Am I the only one who doesn't like Total War? Although actually I haven't played most of them, I was kind of put off by Shogun. And AofE 3 looks sweet.

TBS? Advance Wars all the way. Last level is bloody hard, though. It took me ages to win. And Alpha Centauri is always fun.

RTS’s are nothing but clicking contests.

TBSs are for the true fan of strategy and the Civilization series is the king of TBS.

By the way, for all you civ addicts I suggest you go here (http://www.civanon.org/). Its flipping hilarious.
