Zotona's Music Appreciation Awards

Zotona
11-06-2005, 22:30
There were some music awards a little while back, but now I wanna host my own. So, basically, there can only be up to 10 nominees in any one category, 'cuz there are only 10 poll options! Once we get 10 nominations in a category, I'll construct the poll. I reserve the right to nominate as much as I want, but everyone else gets just 1 nomination per category. I know, totally unfair. It's my thread, I can do what I want. :p There are already 31 categories. If you can get 2 other people to second your nomination for a new category, I'll add it.

Unless otherwise stated, these are "of all time" as opposed to "this year". Nominations in bold are my own.

How about adding jazz and/or blues as a genre? Hope this doesn't violate the one nomination rule!

No, you're right, I should add that. I was just waiting to see if someone would ask about it.

Most Annoying - Overprotected-Britney Spears(I like some of her stuff, but this one was a little ridiculous

Worst Artist-Hilary Duff..Lindsay Lohan..Hilary Duff...Lindsay Lohan(she did that movie where she sang, it pushed her over the top to me

Does Disney music count as a genre?(music you find on the Disney Channel, by people who work almost exclusively with Disney...coughRaven SymoneHilaryDuffcough) cuz that could be a nomination for genre best avoided.

For best country artist: Faith Hill

Most Annoying Song: "Overprotected"-Britney Spears. Okay, I'll add it.

You know, you're only supposed to nominate one per category. I'll add Hilary Duff because that's the one you said first (and, honestly, the one that annoys me most of the two!). If anyone else is motivated to nominate Lindsay Lohan for Worst Artist, then I'll add her.

Disney music, for the most part, fits under the "bubblegum/teen pop" genre.

Best Country Artist: Faith Hill. Okay, I'll add that one, too.

Gonna second the Jazz nomination for genre.

Genre avoided would be 'adult contemporary,' that Sade/Micheal Bolton/Kenny G/Shadowfax riddled radio play format. If thats too vague, New Age.

Best Decade I'll say 50s because of what changed then allowed the changes that come.

Best song is a doozy...Girl from Impania, and heres why: Hardly anyone listens to that kind of music, and yet everyone knows that song. That's gotta say something.

Best Instrumental, I'm not likely to agree with any choice...Giant Steps by John Coltrane. Thats what I'll hit off the top of my head. If it has to be 'rock' then I'll say Miserlu by Dick Dale, almost arbitrarily...

Most annoying...Anything 'sung' by sampled cats or dogs...

Most inspiring...Stand Sly and the Family Stone

Best Lyrics...Time Pink Floyd

Worst Lyrics...Ironic Allanis

Best Album...Some one will mention Dark Side.. so I don't have to. I'm going to go with Kind of Blue Miles Davis

Best artist...personal bias is going to have to nominate someone that won't get voted for much, but Eric Dolphy (free jazz sax player)

Worst Artist...too many to sort out...

Best Country Album...not qualified to judge, but I'll say American III by Johnny Cash

Best Pop...it's all white noise to me...

Best R&B Album...Soul and funk don't have their own catagories, so I'm going to give Stand (the album this time) another shout. (Sly and the Family Stone)

Best Hip Hop...36 Chambers Wu Tang Clan

Best Rock...alright, Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd

Best Country Artist...Johnny Cash, unless someone nominated him while I was doing this, then Willie Nelson.

Best Pop artist...I feel that this would only encourage them...

Best R&B...James Brown

Best Rap & Hip Hop...Grandmaster Flash. Gotta give it up.

Best Rock song...don't know

I'm gonna bow out of the song nominations for now...

so many damn catagories...

Genre Best Avoided: I almost nominated New Age myself but decided not to. I'll add it now.

Best Decade: 50's. Okay, I'll add it.

Did you happen to mean "Girl from Ipanema"? I've never actually heard it, myself, that I know of, which shows how much I know. Anyway, I'll add it.

Most Inspiring: "Stand!"-Sly and the Family Stone. I'll add it.

Best Lyrics: "Time"-Pink Floyd. I'll add it.

Best Album: Kind of Blue-Miles Davis. I think I'll wait on this one, see if anyone else likes it. I'm thinking there might be slightly more mainstream albums nominated.

Best Artist: Eric Dolphy. I think I'll wait on this one, see if anyone else likes it. I'm thinking there are some more mainstream artists about to be nominated.

Best Country Album: I'm gonna hold out on this one, since you just said you're "not fit to judge" and you're nominating Johnny Cash for "Best Country Artist". If anyone seconds it, I'll add it.

Best R&B Album: Stand!-Sly and the Family Stone. I'm gonna hold out on this one, since you've already nominated the song. If someone else seconds it, sure.

Best Rap & Hip Hop Album: 36 Chambers-Wu Tang Clan. I'll add it.

Best Rock Album: Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd. I was raised on albums such as these. I'll add it.

Best Country Artist: Johnny Cash. I'll add it.

Best R&B Artist: James Brown. I'll definitely add it.

Best Rap & Hip Hop Artist: I'm gonna hold out on this one, because I think there'll be more mainstream artists nominated in this category.

NorCal, and I watch a lot of tv. Just lucky I guess.

You lucky NorCalians!

Also, for a catergory, how about "Catchiest Song", as in the song you are most likely to find someone humming after hearing it.

I nominate "Olivers' Army" by Elvis Costello.

Just because it's catchy doesn't mean I have to like it.

But I do.

Best Genre: Heavy Metal is a subgenre of Rock. If I added all the subgenres of Rock which are popular, I wouldn't have room for anything else. Deal with it. :D

Genre Best Avoided: Okay, I guess I'll switch "Christian Rock" to "Religious". ;)

Best Decade: 20s. I'll add that.

Best Instrumental Song: I can't believe I added this category. How often do I listen to all-instrumental songs, anyway? Once every 2 or 3 YEARS? Um... anyway... "Summer" by Jerome Summers. I'll add it.

Most Inspiring Song: "Dreaming of You"-Selena. I'll add it.

Best Song: "Lean on Me"-Al Green. I'll definitely add it.

Best Lyrics: "Kiss Me"- Sixpence None the Richer. Okay, I don't really like those lyrics, but I'll add it anyway.

Worst Lyrics: "Stupid Girl"-Garbage. Cannot be done. I like those lyrics, I like that song, and I like that artist. Sorry, it's my thread, make your own if you have problems. :) I will add "Ass Like That"-Eminem.

Best Artist: The first one you said was the Beatles. If someone else wants to nominate U2, then I can add 'em then.

Worst Artist: Michael Jackson. Sorry, the King of Pop, molestor or not, is exempt from this category.

Best Pop Album: X & Y-Coldplay. Okay, I'll add it.

Best Pop Artist: You already nominated Coldplay for Best Pop Album. If someone else seconds your nomination, I'll add it.

You lucky NorCalians!

Also, for a catergory, how about "Catchiest Song", as in the song you are most likely to find someone humming after hearing it.

I nominate "Olivers' Army" by Elvis Costello.

Just because it's catchy doesn't mean I have to like it.

But I do.
Okay. I'll add that category.

(04) New Wave (Cannot think of a name)

I actually nominated New Age, which is the realm of Yanni and John Tesh and some others that I've scared over.

Not that New Wave doesn't chaff, but I might find something I could handle in New Wave, not so much New Age, that's a dry well.

When does an artist become "overplayed"?

Maybe Artist was wrong, how about Most Overplayed SOng?
A song that's not really new anymore that you still hear every time you turn on a radio or music tv station.

I hear "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson, along with Maroon 5's "This Love", and Avril's "complcated" so often it's not even funny.

EDIT:Nevermind, if we already have too many categories.

Okay, somebody has to second Grandmaster Flash as greatest hip-hop artist-along with people like Afrika Bambata he is the father of hip-hop, the legend (who I finally saw live a few years ago, woo hoo!).

C'mon people Grandmaster Flash-second it.

He's in that comic book basketball add where they are trying to get a player a knickname and it ends with 'Flash is already taken.' He's mentioned in the Blondie rap song.

Grandmaster Flash

Also, I'm going to re-campaign for Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, with Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane, Bill Evans...it's like if Hendrix, Clapton and Getty Lee where all in a band.

Kind of Blue second it!

It's the album even non-jazz fans have. (Amazon blurb). It really is the greatest album, and you all know it. Second it.
