Left Handed?

It's a well known fact that left handed people are awesome and it's documented throughout history (http://www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk/famous.html). So who here is a lefty?

:D

And if you are, what are some of the things that annoy you about it? For instance, I hate ring-binder folders, because when trying to write, the rings get in the road of my arm. I have to use them upside down or write on the back of the paper...which is...weird, and several of my teachers when I was in school whinged about it. Nuts to them. Being a left handed guitarist also sucks, because try walking into a music store, seeing all of these nice guitars at reasonable prices, but they only have one lefty that is twice as expensive as everything else. Oh, and the checkouts at the supermarket where I work are laid out for right-handed people, which is annoying when I have to lift something heavy or awkward. Bah. A small price to pay for awesomeness.

My dad's a left-handed guitarist, and his dad's left-handed too, and hates his music. Funnily enough, I'm right-handed, proving (Perhaps) that hand-usingness is not genetic.

I am right handed, and FAR from boring! I am however, left eyed. I just found this out when I started pistol shooting lessons. I can't see the target straight unless my left eye is covered because I'm right handed. It isn't that common... Right handed, left eye dominant. They call it "cross eyed dominant". (It doesn't mean I'm cross eyed!) In my case, now that I think about it, it makes sense... snickers to self.

Can you change your handedness?

I tried playing guitar right-handed...and it just didn't work. No rhythm in my right hand. I could probably train myself to write right-handed, but my natural preference would always be my left...so I guess the answer is no. Then again, I prefer to use a joystick and a mouse in my right hand over the left, but that could be because i've grown up with right-handed models and come to think of them as normal. If i'd had a choice when I was younger, I probably would have begun to use them with my left hand.

I'm lefthanded and proud of it!

When I was still going to school and university in Germany, you could buy ring-binder folders for lefthanded. They just had the rings on the other side... but it still freacked out some teachers.

What I really hate though are some kitchen appliances. Can-openers, vegetable-peelers, some knifes... I always end up using them in a strange way and completely croocked to make them work, and nobody can watch me doing that without freaking out.
Oh, and fountain-pens. I spent halt my childhood trying to scrub ink of my fingers. In German schools, many teacher will make you use fountain-pens rather than ball-pens or pencils, and when you are left handed, you don't trail script behind, you rub right across it with your hand. And that stuff never dried fast enough!

I didnt say that all leftys were like that, jsut a lot.

In a sense, leftys are more stable than rightys, cause they can suffer left lobe damage (which is thought to control the more primitive human functions) and still have use of their dominant hand, whereas rightys have to get used to using the other one.
Of course, right lobe damage is often more serious than just messing up your hands....

in the world in general there are more rightys, but i think this post is a bit biased by the 'Boring' or 'Awesome' labels...

I was left-handed as a wee lad until I started school, where left-handedness was essentially beat out of me by teachers. I still remember the mantra being drilled into me: "We write with the right!" followed usually by having the writing implement forcibly taken from my left and placed in the right while my left wrist was slapped.

As an adult, I still write mostly right-handed, although I can do a passable job with my left (it's fun when I'm doing a presentation with an overhead projector to write from both sides :) ). I golf left, and my fishing rods are flipped for left-handed use... In baseball I mostly bat right and I play hockey right. I'm left-eye dominant for shooting.

So I guess I'm pretty ambidextrous now, but if it hadn't been for some Cro Magnon teachers, I'd be a leftie.

Personally, I'm a leftie all the way. I play guitar left handed, people complain they don't know how I can do it, but I pick up their guitars and can't imagine using them the other way up.

I've heard about the thing with lefty's being evil. In the middle ages, left handedness was a sign of being in league with the devil. I think that shows us as more awesome rather than less so.

Yes, you can change your handedness but its not really something that's recommended. My husband and his sister were born lefties. Their parents tried to correct that. Back then that was the thing to do. My husband never changed but his sister instead is ambidextrous because of that. As you see though, she never became fully right handed. The only problem with left handedness is really tools etc. that are all made with right handed people in mind. Lefties tend to injury themselves more because of that but to me thats the only drawback I can see. Love the lefties! My brother is also left handed and he's the best! Plays some great guitar :)

Same with me, but I had it explained differently.

The theory that I heard (although I've never researched it) is that we "cross eyed dominant" shooters were born left handed (if we're right handed) but were taught how to do everything right handed at a very young age, so we grew up thinking we were right handed.

Actually, I'm pretty ambidextrous as a result. (I have to be -- I'm a drummer. :D) When shooting, I'm more accurate with pistols and shotguns when shooting right handed, but more accurate with rifles when shooting left handed.

Yep. I still have a pair of left handed scissors...but you can work around it...if you put the pressure on a right handed pair the correct way while using it left handed so that the blades meet together instead of coming apart at the joint, they work fine. :)

With the guitar playing, is that what feels right, or was that how you were shown how to play it? Originally, I took lessons, and was advised by the owners of the college to play right-handed...did so for a few months until my teacher (who is also a lefty) found out I was actually left handed and advised me to switch and see if it was more comfortable...

Originally I was handed down a right-handed guitar, so that's what I started mucking around on. Hmm. I think in my case I was lucky to find out so early and make the switch. I can still play basic things right handed, though...which helps when visiting music stores and testing out pedals, etc. The whole problem was, my right hand was so tense and rigid...there's no rhythm in it whatsoever. And forget fingerpicking with it :p Playing left handed feels very right. Though, i'll never be able to own a vintage guitar unless I want to pay thousands of dollars...ah well. I'm ambidextrous. I use both left an right for sculpting, drawing, painting, welding. I fence left handed and play hockey left handed...because all you righties are so dumbfounded by left handed players...makes things a little easier. I can write beautiful cursiove with my right hand, but with my left I can only print. I've had a lot more practice writing with my right hand. Being Ambi doesn't mean one can do all things equally with each hand. Things like writing, etc. require practice to do well...so to be able to do copperplate script with my left as well as my right hand, I'd have to practice just as much with my left as I have done with my right.

I can however break noses equally well with either hand...for some reason that doesn't take much practice.....just provocation

Well, everything is built for right handers, and we're supposed to just adapt- or pay a lot more for a left-handed version (not possible at times, particularly with machinery in some workplaces). It's a form of oppression. Not brutal oppression, admittedly, but it can be a downright pain in the arse at times.

And that was taking an adult test at the age of 13.

Well, everything is built for right handers, and we're supposed to just adapt- or pay a lot more for a left-handed version (not possible at times, particularly with machinery in some workplaces). It's a form of oppression. Not brutal oppression, admittedly, but it can be a downright pain in the arse at times.

I wouldn't say it's oppression, since that is termed as a deliberate act.

It's more a lack of care.

Well, to this day, children are forced to write left-handed by parents and other people who think it isn't the norm....there is a religious belief among Judaism (and possibly carried over into some sects of modern Christianity) that the left hand is unclean...

There's oppression there. But it's worth the tradeoff ;)

Ambidextrous.

I can write with both although I mostly (like 99% of the time) write with my right hand.

I see better with my left eye but kick better with my right foot.

I play guitar right-handed though. That's about the only thing I can't do with both hands.

I'm not weird now am I? :(

I was born a leftie, but my dad forced me to use my right hand for a few years. I'm pretty much ambidextrous, though I'm still better at some things with my right hand (writing, namely).

Left-handed people are quite sinister! :D

Ah, shucks. You beat me to it.

And they are!! Here (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=sinister&x=19&y=13) is proof. :D

I'm right handed, but have tried to use scissors left handed many times. They don't cut right! If I recall, there were left handed and right handed scissors when we were in grade school.

There were never any left handed scissors or desks when I was in school, but then that was in the "ancient times." :D

Sinister: 4 a : of, relating to, or situated to the left or on the left side of something; especially : being or relating to the side of a heraldic shield at the left of the person bearing it b : of ill omen by reason of being on the left

I always knew there was something wrong with that political party. :D
