Sports - What do you like?

Right, which is your favourite sport (primarily to watch, since not all that many of us are lucky enough to drive a racing car).

Baseball
Basketball
Car Racing (Which type?)
Cricket
Football/Soccer
Ice Hockey
Rugby (league or union)
Swimming
US-Football
Other

Why? What do you like about it and what don't you like about the others?

I'm a Motorsport Person myself, I like the WRC, F1, various Touring car Championships (eg the DTM). But possibly my favourites are the little series like Aussie Improved Production Cars and that kind of thing.
I also like Football (some may call it "Soccer", I don't know why), but that's not hugely popular here in Oz and so I only watch some games occasionally.
Oh, and occasionally I watch a bit of Cricket on TV, especially when some interesting players are on.

Other: Fencing. While I wish that true sword fighting was still widely spread, I find that the fluid grace of fencing to be fascinating. It takes a lot of skill to fence. I hate all other sports, really. I used to play soccer, which was fun, and some baseball, and was on a swim team but I've never liked watching them. I can't stand ("american") football. Bunch of guys running around slamming into each other to satisfy some need to look macho, imo. Same with other similar sports.

People call "football" "soccer" in the United States because we already have something called "football", but it's a lot different than rest-of-the-world football.

I chose other because I hate all sports with a passion. Except football(american, not your football), which I hate even more so.

Swordfighting would be awesome, I'd like that sport.

Swimming, soccer, and waterpolo. All great sports I love to play.

Although none of them I've extensively trained in for more than a couple weeks.

Ice Hockey I like it because it involves Ice and is a Team sport Big hits lots of action Canadians is there anything else one could want?
Oh yeah it needs CheerLeaders.

Rugby Fast paced Is a team game where everyone has to contribute all the time unlike American Football In Rugby the Forwards have to be fairly Mobile and the backs are strong theses days.
Players have to contribute on Offence and Defence.

CricketSlow but thats what makes it special you can chat away while watching it and the nsomething hapens so you can cheer!
Perfect way to waste a day basking in the sun.Two variations Test Cricket an epic contest over 5 days hopefully involving bothe teams Batting and bowling twice.
One Day International's involve Pyjamas and the White ball each team bats once and bowls once.

Cricket is Grand because of all the differnt shots you can play and as the bowler pitches(By Pitch i mean hits the wicket(By wicket i mean the turf) a different delivery it could bounce high or low the ball can spin eratically or swing late putting the batsman under pressure.

Rugby LeagueThe break away Rugby started in 1908(around then anyway) and is based around the once your tackled you must play the ball under your legs rule.
you can be ttackled 5 times before you must kick or run before handing the ball over to the other team.
The money used to be in League but Union has replaced it as the money sport. The NRL is Awesome go Sharkies(even if you did lose last night)

BasketballInvented by a Canadian because Grid iron players didnt like the cold.
America's reign as number 1 internationally is over which is good many nations are starting to play it seriously.
The NBA is awesome but would be more so if they stopped Traveling and the Team relocation.

It's gotta be field hockey. Faster and more fluid that football, more passing and more tactical teamwork than ice hockey, and anyone can play (there's clubs in nearly every town and city here).

edit: by football I mean soccer.

Baseball - It's America's past time and my favorite sport. I like watching it and I love playing it. There's a lot of history and tradition in it that makes it appealing.

Ice Hockey - I like watching it (more live then on television) and Detroit has a better hockey team then those Canadians, even when we don't.

Soccer - I like playing it almost as much as I like playing baseball. I don't really enjoy watching it, though. I guess it's more fun when all your friends are excited about it and it has all the tradition and history surrounding it, like in about every country but the United States.

US Football - Because Americans are attracted to things that kick ass. It also has the history and tradition that people to baseball. There's no better sport to watch with friends, either on television or live.

Forumla 1, Le Mans, DTM, Superbike, Nascar (when it makes left and right turns), World Rally Championship, Air Races. Assorted other racing series.

Oh and actually racing myself. 'Lucky' has nothing to do with it. You can build a decent spec race car and go racing for less than 5k.

What, only $5 grand? Why, I've got that in my sock. And of course storing a race car, transporting it, repairing and maintaining it, entry fees...thats nothin'...anyone can do it...or, maybe, not...

You have certianly earned the ability to race, good on you. But it's not 'nothing,' not everyone has or can dedicate that much resource to it, even if they wanted to because there are other factors in thier lives. But to condence all of that understanding, people will phrase it 'those lucky enough to drive a race car,' since it takes up less space and most people understand that...

I know, but my sorry life mainly revolves around marching to uni and back, occasionally working and hmmm...writing on these forums maybe?
I'm spending most of my money on my road car (bloody repayments they are). Once I finish Uni, I'll get something better and turn my old one into a race car.
It's a '99 Subaru WRX currently doing somewhere around 240bHP. It is pretty fast, but I wouldn't want to take it racing.

Sorry I didn't include cycling, I had thought of it but you can only have 10 options max in a poll.

rugby union! used to play it and love to watch it. was watching the Lions and the maoris a minute ago. Rugby League has its merits too, but its too repetitive for me.

top three-

mountaineering/climbing - not a competitive sport, but highly skilled in both respects. also they are much more exciting than any other sport i know. although sometimes it gets extremely cold.

cycling - i dont treat it as a sport, because its my method of transport, but me and my freind cycle every where together, and we are pretty damn fast.

field hockey - my old high school is a sports specialist school and had its own astroturf pitch, which was were i found my love of hockey. unfortunately i havent played since i left about two years ago.

You poor people, do you not know the glory that is Australian Rules Football?

Of course, being biased, I'd have to say that Fencing kicks ass as well, (not Sabre though, that's for lazy people).

What's the difference between Rugby League and Rugby Union?

What's the difference between Rugby League and Rugby Union?

Various working class men in england around the turn of the 20th century (possibly a bit before that) didn't like that rugby union was an ameture (and remained that way until the mid 90s) so they started up what they called 'the rugby league'. They took out the parts of union they didn't like, such as lineouts and made teams 2 players smaller by removing both the flankers. They also got rid of rucks, so when a tackle is made, everyone stops and gets up so that the tackled player can 'play the ball'. After 6 tackles, the ball is turned over (so they kick on the 5th usually).

That's a fairly basic description, and would rely on you having at least seen some rugby union. If someone refers to 'rugby' they, in most parts of the world, would be refering to Rugby Union. League has only really taken off in the UK and Australia, and to a lesser extent in New Zealand. International rugby league doesn't really properly exist.

Lefties aren't so disadvantaged. They can usually hit harder, and there's not much difference in control.

I'm into superbike racing and freestyle motocross. NASCAR truck series is pretty fun to watch...

...and GOLF.

I can't believe you put SWIMMING up there as a sport and forgot GOLF.

EDIT: I actually play golf, not just watch it. It's more fun that way. Also, I used to race 125s (motocross) in my teens.

I'm English but i just love American Football and watch all games i can even if they are not my team. One of the best things about the game is that you can watch teams you don't support and still find it interesting. My team is the Oakland Raiders. JUST WIN BABY!!
