Colin vs Marvin (Hitch-Hiker's discussion)

This one's for all the Hitchhiker's Guide fans out there:

I had a though a couple of days ago: Marvin and Colin seem to be opposite characters, one depressive and one uncannily happy. Does one outway the other? Does Marvin's depressiveness neutralise, exceede or fall short of Colin's happiness?

Without a shadow of a doubt, Marvin's depression way exceeds every single happy character in any book/play/film. Ever.

I'm inclined to agree, though Marvin's last words seem to reduce his aura of infallibale depressiveness...

Who is Colin? One of the doors on the Heart of Gold?

Maybe he's kinda happy (that's really not the right word, but you try to find a word for someone with terminal depression who's infinitesimally glad about one small thing) that his depression is finally going to end.
Mind you, I think he'd have been a lot happier had someone fixed them diodes down his left side.

Definitely Marvin. There's just no way to overcome someone so utterly bleak.

Fullfilled is what Marvin would have been.

A Robot from the Hitch-Hikers building that Ford wires to be permenantly happy. He's in the fourth or fifth book, I'm not sure which...

I like Colin, for the short amount of time that he's actually there, but Marvin most certainly takes the gold.

Must be five, because I just finished Four.

The Heart of Gold navigation computer did have a name though, he says something like 'please call me X if you would like' though I forget what it was.

The mattress swamp scene in 3 basically sums up Marvin. And I would like to hug him and see him and Zem get married but there you go.

I think it was called Eddie.

And you'd be right to think that.
