Guilty Pleasure Music?

Everyone has their prefered tastes in music.

But everyone also has a dark side. A band, or a genre, or a song, that completely and totally contradicts all of their stated musical tastes.

I call it "guilty pleasure music"

I myself could be considered a "metalhead"...but even I have my deep dark secrets.

While I hate techno in general, I LOVE The Prodigy (or just Prodigy, whichever :p )...it's not really as techno-y as most techno...but man, I just love throwing that stuff on sometimes.

I also adore the cheesy 80's rock of the "Transformer's: The Movie" soundtrack...I don't think I could ever get tired of it.

So...what is your "guilty pleasure"? :)

Cool. But it might help to state, in general, your prefered musical tastes...otherwise we have no frame of reference. ;)

I like metal too, mostly.. but I also like Pinback.. that's a guilty thing I guess, but they're great. I first heard them on the deftones side-project album "team sleep" which came out like a month ago, so I got their self-titled album, which is really great.

edit - I also like bluegrass. :D

Johnny Cash and other OLD country music.

I'd hardly call Johnny Cash a guilty pleasure, the man's a dead-set legend.

Mine's probably cheesy 70s music.

My normal listening tastes are very hard to define though.

I usually listen to sort of a sort of eclectic jazzy electro-funk mix. It's not what you'd call mainstream, and it's often very obscure.

But sometimes, just sometimes, I listen to Soft Cell's Tainted Love, and I put Abba on when I think nobody's around.

Im usually a prog acoustic or hard rock fan, the older the better, so thats stuff like U2, Van Halen etc, and then you're thrash guitar players, like Steve Vai, Joe SAtriani and Eric Johnson. And you're totally right about the dark side.

I secretly like early ninety's acid house and 80s powerballads.

I have no 'guilty pleasure music' because my musical tastes range from Opera to Trance to Classical to Country to Rock to Rap to the Blues. Bad Religion and Bach are often on the same playlist one after the other.

If I had a 'guilty pleasure' music it would probably be rap because that is the musical category I have the least of.

I listen to a lot of free jazz and 20th century, indigenous music, folk musics (I had entertained being an ethno-musicologist because I had become obsessed with disecting elements of influence, going back through hybrid genres.) The conditions and function of the music is sometimes as important to me as how it sounds.

Guilty pleasure would have to be surf guitar, ska, and The Cherry Poppin' Daddies (they did Zoot Suit Riot which was the last irratating nail in the coffin of the 'swing craze,' but that is not a good example of that band and is really late in a very....you know what? I like them...dammit....) I also like Soul Coughing and They Might Be Giants, but I think those are actually consistant with my tastes. (Ska, technically too. I really enjoy second line music, which is the same kind of party oriented music. Not that they sound the same, but going back to conditions and function...)

Austin Lounge Lizards. Big week spot for those guys. It's like country folk with lyrics (gasp) that I can get into.

And lounge, for some reason. One of my favorite CDs is my lounge version of the Star Wars themes. Fantastic, especially the emperors march....

My taste in music is slightly infamous for its eclecticity... I usually go for pop (I prefer European stuff to North American; I listen to a lot of Nena, Pur, Tarkan, and Mustafa Sandal), dance, classical, oldies, techno, Latin, swing, jazz, hymns, Christian pop, crooner/standards, songs from musicals, and game music.

As for guilty pleasures... Well, I always picked on my siblings for liking Prozzak, but some of their songs are not so bad (if one just ignores that voice). Ditto for Danny Kuebelboeck.
Another guilty pleasure would be a few songs that really do not meet my moral standards (overtly sexy tunes that are irresistable for dancing).

P.S.: I have a songlist or two up at http://spaces.msn.com/members/kies/ if you doubt the wide variety of music I purport to love.

Guilty pleasures: I don't think I have any! I have a great library of eclectic music. (Aside from country... I only like Clint Black.)

I guess I'm proud to say that I also have no 'guilty pleasure music'.

That's not really that strange, I know people into genres as varied as metal, punk, ska, pop, industrial, even classical, who like the Prodigy. I generally can't stand any of the sub-genres of dance (and Prodigy must come in there somewhere), but Experience is a great album.

I'm mostly into punk, ska, hardcore, industrial and metal, but I do like a bit of guitar pop sometimes - Michelle Branch especially. Also, artists like Tom McRae, Damien Rice, Ed Harcourt, Tom Waits, Nerina Pallot, Tori Amos. Can't beat them if you just want to chill out a little bit. Wouldn't really say that they're guilty pleasures, as I don't feel guilty for it at all.

Pink Floyd, Bjork, Radiohead, Muse, TCTC, Kasabian, RHCPs, REM, KT Tunstall, etc.
Another guilty pleasure would probably be Dire Straits. I tend to tap my foot to anything with a drum beat...and i genuinely like just about anything within my definition of good until somebody (e.g. a freind who is 'good music'ally inclined) says that it is the worst-thing-ev-er. I also like the B-52s and the Prodigy. (i keep saying this, and surely someone will get sick of it soon but) I saw the Prodigy live when i was 6 years old. at a music festival in Reading(?) called WOMAD. it's actually a pretty good festival.

really depends completely what type of music you listen to the most. If its pop then the beach boys and the beatles are your men. If you're a rock man, which, and excuse me if I'm wrong, you seem to be, then the Stones are your guys.
