I'd like to shake the hands of the 86 Congressmen who voted against this, despite the massive show of support by another 338. Oh well, maybe when this is up for review again in five years Congress will be all the smarter.

I will NOT be assimilated. Resistance is NOT futile!
But ironically enough, this bill was introduced by I-VT Bernie Sanders, one of the few self-described socialists in our Congress.

Oh please. Globalisation brought you prosperity, and now it's unpatriotic?

Supporting participation in an organization that undermines your country's sovereignty is unpatriotic.

You should have realised by now that trade negotiations are give-and-take. You get something, and They get something.

Some people on this forum have in the past gone as far as saying that opposition to WTO, IMF, World Bank and other institutions associated with globalisation is communist. So HA! Or something. :p

How do you define sovereignty?
Other than the right to declare war on anyone you like?

Business rules this planet now. Economic Growth is more important than it ever was. All a Government can do is accomodate Business with business-friendly policies, otherwise companies will leave for a place with more business-friendly policies, leaving unemployment and societal turmoil.
Sovereignty in domestic issues does no longer exist in that sense. You just haven't seen that yet because your Government is being so business-friendly.
What do you think will happen if that changed?

I support free trade as much as the next guy, I just don't see why we need to join an international organization just to have free trade.

Not to mention that a lot of these organizations end up restricting free trade...

I would imagine that those congressmen who oppose the WTO are those with districts that have suffered dislocations because of trade liberalization. Steel towns and whatnot.

Well that is a pig for US industry, but it is great news for us where I live.

Well, you know, it's a mixed bag. Though in general it actually has worked well for US industry. Exports are up. They just haven't kept up with the growth in imports, but that is more a function of domestic demand because the money supply is too loose.

Of course, whenever you liberalize trade, there will be local dislocations, but frankly I tend to see it as those who can't compete have been ripping the rest of us off for years in any case; so I have scant sympathy.

Well, you CAN write to your represenatives. I'd get info to show its bad for our country and provide it to them. They have aids that look this stuff up and take letters.

1. Make sure it is intelligenly written, isn't extremist oriented.

2. Make sure it takes the best intrest of the countrymen at priority, AND present examples.
