why do you all feel the need to polarise into just two political camps?

Just blame it on the Jews, that always seems to work.
Seriously, because people find it easy to accept labels. By acceptig labels you then cause polarisation. It has to do with belonging. Politics is also even more of a power struggle that way.

1. We don't have a parlimentary system.
2. Network effect
3. We have many political parties, only two of which wield significant power.
4. Most people cherry pick what they like, and for convience of explaination describe themselves in terms of a party affiliation in order to provide a context.

For instance, I, by way of recent voting record, am democrat. I'm not a registered member of the party. There are republicans I will vote for, there are democrats I would never vote for. And there are elements from each party that find some resonance with my personal ideology, principally democratic and small 'L' libertarian. Another example is Bob Barr. Pretty right wing by many measures, but he's a card carrying member of the ACLU.
