Looking for European/German Nationalist Music
Dutch Antarctica

I'm looking for some new nationalist music or military marches from mainly European nations such as France, Germany, Great Britain, and basically any and all European nations. I prefer music from the WWII-era, but any time period would be good.
Specifically, any recommendations for German music pre-WWII would be especially good. I've seen much of what Nazi Germany has to offer, and I'd like to expand a bit into the past.
But, again, recommendations for music from any European nation is good.

Are you Nazi?
Well, it doesn't change anything. I wouldn't be able to recommend any nationalist music, but, as you said all european music is good, I love the Beatles  !

Correct, I am not. More of a poor-quality amateur historian.

And yet all military, nationalist music you are going to get from Germany of that time will be distributed and played by Nazis.
Stick with French or Russian stuff. It's less controversial... ;)

Are you just looking for marches or will modern nationalistic rock be ok?
Right now I'm listening to some patriotic Czech stuff.
I'm also an amateur historian of sorts :)
For specifically German (and some Russian) songs of WWII, see this site:

There are some MP3 and Midi files plus the lyrics for the songs. I have a few others but I'll have to check specifically.
Note: Almost the entire site is in German

It's not at all that I'm anti-Nazi (not that I'm pro-Nazi either), but that I already have a decent collection of Nazi-German music. Of course you're right, most German national music from the 20th century in general has been Nazi, but there are still other songs such as Ich Hatt' einen Kameraden, and Alte Kameraden (both possibly pre-1900, I don't remember) that I enjoy, as well.

Mostly marches, and nationalist, orchestral things. Like national anthems, things of that sort. Not really rock music. Something you might hear played at an official party rally.

I've been to that site before. I like it. I'm a little put off that there are so few MP3s compared to total number of listings, but I just visited a minute ago, and I'm sure I can find some stuff. Thanks!

I've had this CD set for years. It's high quality, and the Radedtzky March is incredibly well done.

Why ? Should we despise something just because some despicable people also liked it ? I quite like a little Wagner...

Well, before the Nazis claimed it, Wagner was very, very German. Steeped in Teutonic and Germanic mythology, his operas were basically a shout out to everything German. Typical Germans on the street (of a certain age) will recognize snippets of Wagner like a typical USan will know Bruce Springsteen (or insert your US rocker anthem crafter here).
German secular songs from before WWII are numerous. "Veronika, da Lenz ist da" is one, as is the Uhland Folk Song collection, which includes "Sonntag", a German classic. One particularly ironic twist is that the "American" song "Happy Days Are Here Again" was originally a German ditty called "Wochenend und Sonnenschein" (Weekend and sunshine). Most of my knowledge of German salon music comes from a wildly popular (EDIT: in their day) German singing group called The Comedian Harmonists. Do a Google search on them, and lists of songs from their recordings and possibly some re-issues will pop up. Failing that, the English vocal sextet The King's Singers did a tribute album to the Comedian Harmonists that was recently re-issued on CD. Check that one out on Amazon or some other retail/auction site.
I've sung a lot of German art songs and choral music in my time, so as far as a list of composers goes, look for:
Schubert
Schumann
Hugo Wolf
Wagner
Richard Strauss (not that Johann Strauss waltz horseshit)
Mendelssohn
Karl Maria von Weber
Farther back, you get the greats, but fewer actual songs as opposed to choral melodies that might still be familiar:
Beethoven (His work with Goethe texts is rare but interesting)
Brahms
Mozart
Schutz
Scheidt
Schein
Hope that helps!

Thanks! I might buy that, if I can find it someplace like eBay.

Precisely! I'm really not concerned about "controversy" at all.
I recently purchased a CD set of Die Gotterdammerung (not sure on umlaut placement), and I do quite enjoy it. Do you have that?
Hope that helps!

It most certainly does! Thanks.
German nationalism can only mean Wagner. Hitler loved his work, and he loved Hitlers...er..."work"
Berlioz is good for the French
Aaron (or is it Erin?) Copland is pure American (if you are interested in contrast to European style...Just listen to Fanfare for the Common Man)
Glinka, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky are good for Russian
Puccini and Vivaldi are good for the Italians
and if you want some just plain weird stuff, go for some Schoenberg. Weird weird man
Beethoven and any of the Bachs make a good addition to german, but Wagner is by far the best at that entire nationalism thing. Any German opera will make you want to go take over Poland.
Oh, and Chopin...he was born in Poland, lived in France, but wrote alot of Mazurkas (a polish folk dance) and Polonaises (a military style)
I don't know much about nationalistic music beyond the classical stuff mostly because so few modern European groups makes it across the pond, but I hope these help

That is such a terrible list, you didn't even make it out of the Hatecore genre. You even left out Skrewdriver...
