EDIT: I'm finding it rather difficult to pick a best troll...at first glance, Commando is the best - he was around the longest and trolled more prolifically than others. However, I just didn't find his trolling as enjoyable as others (such as VoteEarly, Jesussaves or HerPower. Trolling you could really get your teeth into).

VoteEarly was not a troll. How was he a troll? He had extreme views but he was always articulate and almost never flamed. He also posted as Decisive Action at an earlier time.

Trolling: Posts that are made with the aim of angering people. (like 'ALL JEWS ARE [insert vile comment here]' for example). While Trolls often make these posts strictly in an attempt to provoke negative comment, it is still trolling even if you actually hold those beliefs.

Ha, that guy was funny though for a little kid. The odd thing was he felt compelled to TG me a few times about stuff and he was a lot more likeable in that context. All polite and shit. Go figure.

I suppose some may see it that way. To me a troll is someone who goes out of their way to get a reaction from people in a negative way when they don't even believe what they are saying themselves.. like Snubis.

There has been a lot of drift in the definition of trolling over the last ten years or so. Classically, a troll can be a beautiful work of art. More recently trolling has come to be combined with flamebaiting, and as a catch-all for any dissenting view that other vocal members of a community might find offensive. But in its natural and true form, a troll truly is a thing of beauty.

A troll is a preferably concise statement espousing some viewpoint, which isn't necessarily incendiary at all, which preferably some highly accurate and precise details, but one *incredibly* (actual meaning, no contemporary use) false element. It's an invitation for people, who don't know any better, to not get the joke, and provide dinner theater for the audiance that knows better. Now some of those people will flame-on. But the troll doesn't demand that response.

It's not just a giant lie. It's a specific kind of giant lie in a specific context. It's a presentation of a claim that everyone should know is false in a context where it's impossible to believe the writter could have thought differently.

"The Holocaust was faked." : Flamebait
"The moon landing was faked." : Indeterminate, maybe troll, maybe flamebait, maybe just nuts. It would depend on the context which is missing.
"Creationists are right. Zeus made us out of clay." : Sarcasm.
"I saw a documentary about the faking of the Mars landing. Who'd believe OJ Simpson as an astronaut anyway." : Troll.

But along came September 1996, and lo and behold everything people didn't like for whatever reason became a troll. Which I find sad.

I agree. Snubis was a master at trolling. Because he was believable. I really believed him. I thought he was really a right wing bible thumping freak. The reason he was so good at trolling is because no one ever figured it out. It was him who finally after months and months who finally fessed up that he was a troll. He also never got himself deleted. He was masterful at trolling. Once he told us he was really a troll and gave us links to other sites he trolled we then knew he was telling the truth. So, I think/believe Snubis was by far the best troll NS has ever had. Was he the funniest? I'd say no. But he was the most skilled troll. IMO.
