Which of These Would Offend You Most?
The flag burning thread in combination of the "dangerous" books thread gave me an idea-this poll.

Neither. What offends me is book burning - the strongest sign that neanderthals did indeed interbreed with homo sapiens.

Probably the burning of an effigy of me.
The thing on my own poll that offends me most is burning ANY book. It kills me to think that someone would do such a thing. However, I try to respect that whoever does that has their reasons.

I must say, I wouldn't really give a toss about any of these.
Burning a particular book as a protest wouldn't bother me, so long as it was not rare or otherwise irreplaceable. But massed bookburnings whose intent is to eliminate a particular literature from an area is offensive in the extreme.
Burn a flag? Eh. It's just a scrap of fabric.
I said Other: The Burning of Myrth.
You'd have to be one sick bastard to do such a thing.

None of these offend me greatly. Plus Myrth was never a baby, therefore has no baby blanket to burn.
The written word is one of humanity's greatest achievements. To defile it IN ANY WAY would be an abomination. That's why I have a dislike of the chumps that want to ban certain books (bastards always ban "Huck Finn" and "To Kill a Mockingbird"...I loved those... :( )

Its lots of fun, you can't refuse it!

What about good ol' bra burning?
They ought to be banning the Bible. Nobody ever got killed in the name of Huck Finn.

Book burning, by far. If more people burned religious icons and fewer burned books, the world would be a better (and warmer!) place.

It depends on the context to me...like burning a cross on someone's front lawn as a method to communicating a larger message is increadibly offensive and scary

That is the most inane thing I've ever heard, bigoted and judgemental.
Just because nut jobs use a book to do evil, does not make that book evil.
Just because the TV portrays many evil things, doesn't make the TV evil. Do not blame the book for the actions of the man.
That comes back to the whole book burning thing.
If everyone burned everything that they disagreed with the world would be a lot more peaceful. Of course, that would mean a totalitarian dictatorship govt. run by who ever got rid of the other guy's stuff.

Most of the others I wouldn't care about that much, unless you physically take my religious book/symbol from me and burn it in front of me and afterwards spitting on the ashes...I'd have to beat ya down then (except that I'm probably incapable of doing something out of malice so, I'd probably just whine a lot and be righteously indignant. Gotta love righteous indignance.)
A flag, I view as a tenet of freedom of speech, as long as you don't steal the flag to burn it, or burn down a building while doing it...you know, whatever floats your boat.
If you burned my favorite books you'd probably make something akin to
The Great Chicago Fire in 1871, so, burning my favorite books is not a good idea.
Books represent knowledge. To burn them is rejecting knowledge in favor of superstition, ignorance, and stupidity. Three things that can easily lead to violence.
Who's Myrth, how'd you get his baby blanket, and is he ok with you burning it?

hey, what have you got against neanderthals?? I'm pretty sure they never burnt books :p They never had written records at all! And, on a unrelated note, the Neanderthals were actually pretty intelligent; the communication area of their brains was under evolved, however, so their speach was simple. I remember it from this old Discovery Channel documentary.

Gah, if you never get rid of ANY books in some way, then what will we do with all the excess books? That's like... book pollution O.o As long as a book is teaching no one and it's just taking up space, it's burn worthy. Or disposable in another way that's better for the environment :p

If someone were to burn a book they would insult me and everything I stand for, even if the book they burnt was an insult to me and everything I stand for. But they would do a greater offence to themselves by revealing what an ignorant scumbag they are, and hopefully anyone who heard of them would recognise this.

If you burn my flag, it deeply disturbs me, but if you burn a book you're in direct opposition to one of the primary things my flag stands for: freedom of speech. Ero, burn a book and I'll hurt ya! ;)

Burning some book is demonstrating a valid opinion against the authors and the ideas of the book.
Burning a country's flag, if that country is a nationstate important to its people, is similar to racism.

I'm not an easily-offended person, but when I see people burning books (by books, I mean actual literature, not some math or science school book) my stomach turns, especially if they are burning the book because they are offended by what is inside of it (and that's usually the case).
I just don't understand what a person thinks they would accomplish by setting fire to a pile of "objectionable" literature. It doesn't make the "threatening" ideas expressed in the book disappear, so why make the trouble?
Behavior like that makes me worry about society in general.
