Internet access
What kind of internet access do you have and how much do you pay per month?
(in $ or €).
My family at the moment has ISDN (right now about 45€ p.m.) but we'll have DSL soon (30€ p.m.).

I have 2mbps Pipex ADSL with no limit. Costs me somewhere between £25 - £30 per month. It was fitted free as 1mbps, and when they upgraded all their products they upgraded it for free to 2mbps, which I wasn't too upset with :D.
I only got it a year and a half ago, though. There was no broadband whatsoever available in my area until December 2003, which I find disgusting considering I live right in the middle of a fairly large town. I understand that it is similar in other parts of the UK. And 2mbps is the fastest the lines here will allow at the moment, also. I've checked whether I can get faster, and I can't. Telewest have broadband cables in this area, but for some reason they refuse to hook any of them up to any houses, despite listing our postcode as 'ready for broadband', which pissed me off no end.

Not really his though, so he's cheating :D.

That’s bandwidth ON a t1 not a dedicated t1
A t1 like operates at 1.45 Mbps (can push the actual transfer rate if you go ATM)

A T1 service does NOT carry 100 Mbps … only 1.45 (roughly)
Your univ probably has several backbones … probably a Few T3’s (unless in Europe they can be E3 or DC’s )

Well, I don't envy you the 10 GB monthly limit. That's one third of my average use.
I pay $85 for 2Mbps ADSL (which currently is the most I can get; unlimited monthly). Upgrading to 4Mbps at the same price, in two weeks.
The upload speed sucks, though. 256kpbs now, 400kbps when it's upgraded.

You're missing the "direct connect to backbone" option. That'd be 65 Mbps for the entire line, though 4 Mbps is the record speed I've seen.

Well you still got a large service but “backbone” is a relative term … I would not consider anything but a SONET connection to be a “true” backbone

Get a router that does bandwidth handling / throughput limit :)

It's not a question of bandwidth, it's a question of bandwidth quota (that is, 65 Mbps).

*weeping over everyone else having fast service*
i have dial-up that comes through on an honest-to-god phone line strung from fence pole to fence pole for 1/2 mile. on a good day i get 24kbps. it costs me $21/month + the phone line.
i could get wireless from town but it requires a 40 ft tower with some bigass reciever on it. (to get higher than the trees for line of sight) but im worried that as soon as i do the compay will go out of business and leave me receiving nothing.

What about satellite? You'd still need the phone, but downloads would be much faster.

Time Warner Cable, aka Roadrunner, for $34.95 a month. I get about 3Mbps, even when they claim they can get me 5Mbps...I don't really care, though; it beats the hell out of anything else out there. Plus I don't have to have a phone line.

i do have satellite tv but its in a fairly iffy spot due to the trees. plus there are no local guys doing the install work here. i thnk they would have to come down from albuquerque every time i had a problem (75miles)
one of these days im just gonna take the risk and put up the 40 ft tower. im thinking i can get someones old ham tower and adapt it.
I get 2.5Mbit down 256kb up for DKk 430 ($69.85 €57.76 £38.59)
Denmark is one of the most expensive country to get internet service in in Europe. But funnily enough also in top three for persentage of the population online, IIRC.

There are other types of internet connections than DSL and cable you know.
I have 10mbit ethernet.
Time Warner Cable, aka Roadrunner, for $34.95 a month. I get about 3Mbps, even when they claim they can get me 5Mbps...I don't really care, though; it beats the hell out of anything else out there. Plus I don't have to have a phone line.
I have the same thing, though I get 4mbps for $45 a month.
Depending on your service plan, you can get Road Runner at 9mbps, though it's about $90 a month. The best thing about Time Warner, though, is the fact that you get unlimited monthly transfer rates, and the lines are never bogged down.
It's a hell of a lot better than that ComCast shit.
