well?
me, i live in Southampton, which is where the Titanic orginally sailed from (before stopping off at Portsmouth) and i believe its where Spitfires were made during WW2. it also has a history stretching back to being a Roman port.
and i used to live in Winchester, the ancient capital of Wessex and England, where King Alfred The Great was crowned and subsequently went on to unite the disperate kingdoms of England, and where royal coronations were held for centuries after. its also where the legendary Round Table of King Arthur hangs in the old City Hall, but it is, of course, fake ;)

I live in Telford, which is home to Ironbridge. Which they take great pride in dubbing 'Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution'. Named, imaginatively, after the iron bridge that was built over the River Severn that flows straight through the middle of it. I think it was the first iron bridge ever constructed, but it's been a long time since I learned about the place so don't quote me on that. I think some other stuff happened there too. It's a pretty big tourist attraction actually, it's got all sorts of Industrial Age museums and suchlike. Unfortunate for me, as I often drive through there. While it's wonderful to stop every five seconds for the driver in front to take some photos, it does get a bit tedious after a while...
Another interesting thing about Telford is that it has a very good infrastructure for commerce. Which means there are plenty of ways to get out...

I live in Manchester, UK, one of the centres of the Industrial Revolution and the birthplace of the idea of Free Trade (although the guys whose statues stand on the plinths outside the town hall would probably recoil at what we have done to their ideals).

I live in Trenton, NJ. It's where George Washington and his men turned the tide of the revolution and showed that there was hope for the collonies to defeat England. It's home to a pretty decent museum for such a small city. Home of the Trenton Titans, minor league hockey's Kelley Cup champions this year. We've got a nice minor league baseball stadium that occasionally hosts concerts by cool bands.
Trenton is also the capital of New Jersey, which is home to the best local legend ever, the Jersey Devil.

Glasgow, in Scotland, is about 1500 years old. At its peak, it housed over a million people - its population (along with Scotlands as a whole) has been declining for several decades. It currently sits at around 700,000. It is the largest city in Scotland, and the official city coat of arms has two fish on it. It is currently undergoing significant restoration and reconstruction after severe mismanagement by the Conservatives in the 80s. Glasgow is one of only three UK metropolitan areas that has an underground metro system; the others being London and Tyne and Wear. The Glasgow Subway was built in 1896 and substantially modernised in 1977. It has a single circular route. This, taken together with the orange-coloured paintwork of the carriages, has led to it being known as "The Clockwork Orange".

My hometown was one of the centers of the Gold Rush, it was twenty miles down the river from Sutter's Mill. It had the largest Chinese population of California for a while at 2500. The family that ran that part of town still lives there.
After the Gold Rush, the town was stripmined, leaving it almost no native dirt. Rocks became known as "Folsom Potatoes."
It is the sight of a Federal Prison made famous by 'the man in black,' Johnny Cash.
It is the site of the first hydro-electric power plant.
It was (debatably) the home of the Smokey the Bear in it's small zoo for injured animals.
It was one of the last stops on the Pony Express.

San Quentin and Alcatraz aren't too far away from Folsom Prison, so it is subjigated to the third most notable prison in the area. No one ever associates Northern California with hardcore prisons, but we have three pretty close to each other...
the most interesting thing about my habitat, East-Raumafylkí in Norway, must be that it has the highest suicide rate in the country. :p
Well, I live in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The city got international attention in 1970, when nine african americans and one white woman set fire to white-owned businesses in response to slow school desegregation and the assassination of Martin Luther King. The KKK and police came, and the people barracaded themselves in a church. 2 were eventually shot. Eventually, these people were sentenced to a combined 282 years in jail. Amnesty International got involved, and Gov. Jim Hunt pardoned them later.
http://www.lib.unc.edu/ncc/ref/nchistory/feb2005/
There were also huge race riots in 1898. It is known as the Wilmington Massacre. http://www.mith.umd.edu/courses/amvirtual/wilmington/wilmington.html
But now we are a city that is known for it's college, it's movie studio, having the first lesbian state senator in NC, and for it's large surfer and skater culture.
I love it here. How such an intolerant city became one of the most progressive in North Carolina is mindboggling.

1.)The Texas Capitol building is is bigger than the United States Capitol Building (Austin being Capitol of texas is home to this building
2.) Its widely considered the Live music Capital of the world (at any given moment within the Austin citiy limits there are no less than thirty concerts)
3.) There are more popular musicians that got there start in Austin than there are from anywhere else in the world.
4.) Austin is responsible for the creation of this website, the internet and every modern computer (The Microchip was invented here)
5.) Lance Armstrong; has won more Tour de Frances than anyother person in history AND suffered from life threatening cancer BEFORE he ever won a bike race
6.) Texas is the most recognizeable geopolitical entity in the world (More people can recognize Texas by its shape than can recognize any country and or state)

what about where you live?
I live in Antwerp, and I study history. This place, therefore, is heaven to me. A history that stretches back to the early Middle Ages. A beautiful cathedral that is a very deserved landmark for our port-town. Famous artists (Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, etc...) that either lived or worked in my city during the Modern Age. The most prosperous city during the 16th century in the whole of Europe, only equaled by the Northern Italian urban region. Old books that, from the second half of the 15th century onward, were printed and distributed here (and still remain here, for the most part, in museums).
My breathtaking moment: three weeks ago, I laid my hands on the pages of a book that was owned by Peter Paul Rubens himself. A book that is 500 (five hundred!) years old. Goosebumps, even now. Incredible.

I live 1 block north from the location of The Elizabeth II Post Office building, which is at Broadway/Montgomery Ave and Yonge Street, in Toronto.
Back in the 1830s, it that building was known as Montgomery's Tavern, which was the sight of the start of the Upper Canadian Rebellion.
In the same area, south of Broadway Ave, between the Shoppers Drug Mart and The Rose and Crown bar, there is a building that is now the location of various dentist and doctors offices. Back during the 'Nam war, draft dodgers came here and the building was the HQ where Canadians helped these people avoid persecution and gave them the means to settle here.
And this is just what I know about my neighbourhood. There a lot more to my city's history...
King Snot? Snottingham? You're kidding, right?
No its supposedly true!

The Kremlin , the Bolshoi, Red Square with St Basil's Cathedral and the Lenin Mausoleum (the chap is still there), Novodevichii, Danilovsky, and Donskoy Monasteries - I think you've heard... :)
Lubyanka Square wih the buildings of the KGB, Ostankino Tower, the second highest TV tower in the world (I like to call it 'Syringe of All the Russias' :)). The magnificent metro system. The seven art deco high-rise buidings that were erected in 1950s, the tower of the Moscow State University the tallest among them.
Kind-hearted babushkas, beautiful girls from the entire vast territory of the former Soviet Union (well, Chinese and Vietnamese are also present in significant numbers), venal traffic cops... and Mr Putin's armoured Mercedes sometimes passes by at bullet speed together with SUVs of the security service protecting the First Car. :)

Every day I drive on the road that Paul Revere took in 1775, and then up the street where Jingle Bells was written about the sleigh races there. I live in Massachusetts.
Colchester, meaning Coel's castle, is the oldest recorded town in England. It is the root of a number of things famous throughout the anglophone world. Humpty dumpty was derived from the blowing off of the top of one of our Church towers during the English Civil War. Then there's Old King Coel, of course. It was the Roman capital of Britain, too, called Camolodunum, from the Celtic God of War, Camulos. And the castle, built by William the Conqueror, was built on the foundations of a Roman temple burned down by Boudicca. What fun.

me, i live in Southampton, which is where the Titanic orginally sailed from (before stopping off at Portsmouth) and i believe its where Spitfires were made during WW2. it also has a history stretching back to being a Roman port.
and i used to live in Winchester, the ancient capital of Wessex and England, where King Alfred The Great was crowned and subsequently went on to unite the disperate kingdoms of England, and where royal coronations were held for centuries after. its also where the legendary Round Table of King Arthur hangs in the old City Hall, but it is, of course, fake ;)

I live in Dublin, home of the Guinness brewery...
There's just too much to say about this town, I would never reach the end, so I just pointed out the most important fact.
But I'm originally from Bamberg, a small town in southern Germany. It used to hold the world record for the most breweries per capita. It might still do, I don't really know. I grew up with a large variety of beers, and the pint at the moment is around 1 Euro to 1.50 Euros
Historical facts : Bamberg once was capital of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation, though not for long. The emperor who favored this town so much is burried in the cathedral, together with his wife (both are saints). Also, the only pope burried north of the Alps is burried there... funny story, really. He fled Rome because he was afraid that he was being poisoned, but unfortunately, he took the poisoner with him in his entourage.
Bamberg is also famous for the number of witches it burned. 900 between 1623-1634...

What is interesting about where I live? The question of interest is subjective. I can say that I like where I live, Pinellas Park, Florida, because I feel that I have returned to my "roots." My paternal grandparents first moved here in 1929, when it was far more rural than it is today. Going to a smaller scale, my sucker-fish (and I don't know its real name but only that it eats algae) has grown rather large. It is either fighting or playing with the other "big" fish in the aquarium, a "red-tailed black shark." Reflecting back a month or so, I guess it is interesting that the band War had a concert here recent at our annual Rib Fest.

I live in Appleton, Wisconsin...some interesting facts.
- Appleton is where Harry Houdini grew up.
- Appleton's Fox Valley Technical College began in 1917 as the first school in the United Statres exclusively devoted to vocational education.
- Senator Joseph McCarthy got his political start in this area. There is a bust of him on display at the Outagamie County Museum in downtown Appleton.( )
- Appleton's Lawrence University is the second oldest coeducational college in the United States.
- Appleton had the nation's first hydroeletric station, which opened on Sept. 30th, 1882, providing 12.5 kilowatts to light two paper mills and a home. The facility can still be seen along the riverside behind Lawrence University. The first home with hydroelectric power in the United States, the Hearthstone, is now a historical site open for regular tours.
- Appleton claims to have the nation's first enclosed shopping mall, the Valley Fair Mall.
- Mike Lowe, Editor in Chief for Madison's weekly The Onion, hails from Appleton. :D
- Appleton is home to the nation's largest Flag Day parade. (June 14th) :)

It's a beautiful town, and that in spite of the frequent rain. And there is a LOT of rain here; the city's name is derived (over some distance) from Latin "aqua" (Though actually that's because of the hot springs here, not the rain :p ).
Also, it's more than a thousand years old, and has got some nice history behind it (the Holy Roman Emperors were crowned here for some six hundred years), and it was one of the greatest cities in the country during the Middle Ages.
Incidentally, Aachen technically has the prefix "Bad" for its hot springs, but leaves it out because the double "A" is so much more effective in getting first spot in any alphabetical list. :D

I live in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Its about 1 & 1/2 and hours due west of Toronto.
In the rural areas around the area, we have very large, strong community of Old Order Mennonites Much like the Amish. they refuse to use automobiles or have elctricity in their homes. You see them all over the place, including the city, riding along in their horse drawn carriages and wagons, all of them painted black. They are a popular tourist attraction, but after living here for so long, I no longer find it remarkable seeing a horse drawn buggy travellingdown city streets.
We have 2 ubiversities, the University Of Waterloo, and Wilfred Laurier University. U of W is very well known for its computer scinces dept and as a result we have a high number of high tech and software companies based here:
RIM (makers of the famous Blackberry PDA, Sun Microstems (aka: JAVA), Adobe, Macromedia, Descartes, etc.
We also have the largest and oldest Oktoberfest outside of Munich. Thousands of American college students co-mingke with fat, balding factory workers and senior citizens all in the name of getting plastered.
Waterloo is also, despite these things, the world's biggest hick town. With a population of 200, 000 and 2 universities, people would be at least a little cosmopolitan, but it doesn't.

I'm from Honolulu, the state capital of Hawai'i. Among the many interesting things present here are:
*some of the highest gas prices in the nation (not good, but definitely of note)
*beautiful beaches
*ono grinds ("yummy food")
*the triple crown of surfing
--also, the birthplace of surfing :D
*lots of native species (75% of which, unfortunately, are either endangered
or extinct)
*cool tradewinds that make you forget the heat and humidity
The state also has a colorful history. It was "discovered" by Captain James Cook in 1778. Throughout the 1800s, Hawaii was a major whaling port. In the late 1800's the United States overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy, claiming it as a territory. In 1941, Pearl Harbor, which lies just outside of Honolulu, was attacked, providing a catalyst for U.S. participation in WWII.
Hawaii is the southernmost point in the U.S., and is the only state without a racially white majority. It also has the highest percentage of mixed race births in the nation (wOOt!).
Oh, and Hawaii is also the home of Illinois Senator Barack Obama, who gave an *amazing* speech at the DNC last fall :)

True, that they were known as the Sandwich Isles (in honour of Earl of Sandwich), but why does the word 'sandwich' first get used in England to refer to the age old dish if they were invented in Hawaii?

I live in London.
I've walked streets that were old when the Romans left. I've seen the Church of the Knights Templar. The Tower of London is built on a roman fort, which was built on an already ancient temple which was itself built on an even older sacred grove.
My city has the oldest underground railway in the world, as well as the first steam pumped sewage system. It once stood at the heart of the greatest Empire the world has known and survived the pounding of the Blitz. It's dockyards once brought the wealth of the world to the largest city of the 19th century.
There is so much to say about London I'd be here all night. It is truly Le coeur du monde and I love it.

Cuero, Texas
Cuero is a small town in south east Texas. It has a population of about 7000. It proudly boasts that it is the Wildflower Capitol of Texas. It boasts a wide array of characters, including a leprecaun dictator running the local high school, a strange woman always dressed in heavy grey sweats with a pair of headphones connected to nothing, and a special breed of human called the busy-body. It is also home to the Fightin' Gobblers, a team with has the incredible abilty to hypnotize most of Cuero's civilian population every fall. It is also the birthplace of the famous Ruby Begonia, a prize-winning turkey with the ability to resurrect itself, as every year, Ruby is given to a random family to spend some quality time over the Thanksgiving holidays. Never-the-less every year Ruby shows up at the annual Turkeyfest celebration.
Cuero is located in beautiful DeWitt County, which means something about cows. The most interesting feature of Cuero is the recently retopped divided four-lane highway, that is used by high school graduates to escape the monotony(sp?) of Cuero-life by leaving and never coming back.

Everything in Hong Kong is interesting!
But the district of Sheung Wan was among the first places where modern development took place. The British originally landed two blocks away from where I am sitting right now, and gradually this developed into a Chinese town in contrast to the European town in Central district, about 20 minutes' walk away. This place is far more interesting in terms of culture and heritage than where I used to live in North Point.

Birmingham (AL, not the one in Britain hehe)! Post-Civil War economic phenomenon, Civil Rights capital, and an overall wonderful place to live!
New York City. I think it's self-explanatory. :D
True, that they were known as the Sandwich Isles (in honour of Earl of Sandwich), but why does the word 'sandwich' first get used in England to refer to the age old dish if they were invented in Hawaii?
Hmm, maybe my information there was incorrect, anyway, I'm toolazy to re-research it, my understanding was the earl of Sandwich (while residing on the Isle of Sandwich) invented the dish, or called a different dish a sandwich, or something along those lines

He's one of the lucky escapees.
Well, my home of Norwalk, Ohio doesn't have too much to brag about... It's just your average small-town U.S.A. kind of place... The sort of town where one doesn't need to lock his doors, and would probably be alright sleeping on a bench downtown...
It is a part of the "Firelands," an area where people once relocated to when fires set by the British during the revolution destroyed towns in Connecticut... Norwalk, Ohio is named after Norwalk, Connecticut, which was one of the towns affected...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwalk%2C_Ohio
There's the Wikipedia entry for my town... As you can see, not too much to mention... I suppose the IHRA (International Hot Rod Association) might be of interest to some of you, along with Norwalk Raceway Park, which is its HQ...
However, the area around Norwalk boasts some neat things... Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, just 10 minutes or so North of here... Cedar Point (home of multiple record-winning roller coasters, and one of the best all-around amusement parks in the world) is located in Sandusky, about 20-30 minutes North of here... Mansfield, Ohio, a little over an hour South of here, is home to the prison where The Shawshank Redemption was filmed...
But Norwalk? Not much going on...
[Edit:] Oh! I forgot something... Our local VFW is the home of the largest masted U.S. flag in the country! The original tower it flew from was knocked down by a storm a couple of years ago, damaging the flag... However, it has since been repaired, and a replacement pole has been erected, and the 80'x50' flag is flying again...

One day, I was sitting at the computer and said to myself, if anyone I meet on the internet has not only heard of Cuero, but also stayed there, I will buy Satan a space heater, because hell will have frozen over.
The next day I got an email that said "I'll hold you to that." No address, nothing.
So I think it's best that I just buy a space heater....

I have a certain *ahem* person who really wants me to move up there (she lives south of Anchorage...near Homer) but I couldn't find any decent jobs on any of the job boards. (I'm a computer geek...didn't see many of them open up there.)

Seconded. Damn, does Minnesota suck. :(
Yep, pretty much. Crappy weather, moronic Governors(Jessie, the MIND, Ventura, anybody?), and possibly the worst movie ever...
I live in Detroit Lakes Minnesota, which was rated by Playboy as the Number 2 party spot during the summer.
Which is about 40 Miles away from where the craptacular movie Fargo was filmed, which was not filmed in Fargo, North Dakota, but Brainerd, Minnesota. And no we don't have those damn accents.

Cook discovered Hawaii/The Sandwich Isles in 1778. The word 'sandwich' to refer to the foodstuff was in use in the 1760s.

I live in Ottawa, which is the coldest national capital in the world, i kid you not , look it up. Also, coincidentially we have the worlds' longest skating rink; almost 7 kilometers long. Queen Victoria is supposed to have picked us as a capital by looking at a map of the country and going eenie, meenie, mo. :) As well , recently we just played host to the gay wedding of those two characters from The Amazing Race, for what its' worth.

I live in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It's one of the oldest cities in Europe with it's history stretching back to 7000 years ago. It's been controlled by all kinds of people - pre-history, Thracians, Romans, Greeks, Slavs, Bulgarians, Turks and for some time Hungarians. After the Liberation from the Turkish yoke it was made a capital of the newly-freed country, because it was supposed to be in the center of the Bulgarian lands. Unfortunately, the Great powers didn't tought so and now it's only around 50km to the border with Serbia. Still, it's a great city with almost 2 million people. It's motto is "It grows, but it doesn't get old" and the translation of the Greek word Sofia is "Wisdom".

Make that three from Sydney, Australia.
There's a lot more to Sydney if you look for it. But you really have to look hard for it. Oh, and I believe it's officially called Sydney Tower. and it's currently owned by Westfield (they seem to own everything these days...). But Centrepoint's fine, alot of people call it that too. It's had so many different names that it's not funny.
