I played the demo, and to be honest, I wasn't impressed. IMHO, in a good FPS you should know which direction the shots are coming from. You should catch something from the corner of your eye (something on the HUD etc) and be able to narrow it down.

In that game, I couldn't. I was frequently killed because it's dark, and my idiot marine couldn't work out where the bullets/plasma bolts were coming from.

I've got Timesplitters: Future Perfect. That'll do me.

Funny, because in real life, that's how it works. Bullets come out of nowhere and zap you.

If a game doesn't work that way, I don't like it.

That's not what I mean. What I mean is that if I was a soldier, was shot, and didn't die, I'd probably have a rough idea where-abouts I had a hole (back, front, left, right). Hence, I should be able to get that data in a game.

Unless the enemy is using a lot of tracer, it's hard to get an idea of where shots are coming from, as the snap of the bullet echoes from treelines and building surfaces to cause deceptive shot echoes. A lot of times, especially in built-up areas, it's nearly impossible to tell where firing is coming from unless you're looking right at them and happen to spot the muzzle flash.

Also, holes are through and through (generally) and it's often deceptive as to which direction you were hit from - especially if you're hit by plunging fire (machinegun fire from over 400 yards away falls into this category).

The worst part about spotting someone is that it takes time - even if you know the direction, you now have to find out the range - just sending bullets up that way does no good at all unless you really know where someone is.

Case in point: your odds of spotting a man standing in the open drops rapidly to zero as the range goes from 100 to 400 yards. That's if you're walking in an unfamiliar area (as you often are).

The defender, on the other hand, is watching specific transit points - and if you cross through one of them, they have a great chance to spot you. If they are in the prone, you have even less chance to spot them, unless they're using tracer at night.

So they're happily filling you with lead while you're trying to figure out where the bullets are coming from.

Maybe it's just a 'demo' issue.

I have played the full game, and your HUD flashes little red sector markers that give you a rough idea of which side the incoming fire is hitting you... although it gives no identification of elevation or range - which, to be honest - seems pretty fair and realistic. I spent several minutes pinned under a catwalk while someone peppered it with shells, and the occasional stray hit me... In the end, you just have to accept that (as I would suspect real-life) you have to change vantage points. <Cue mad dash to next cover>

Also - not having played the demo, I can't comment... but, in the full game, I used my flashlight in the dark places...

Well, fair enough. I bow to your experience. Having said that, it's not the most realistic of games from the off, is it? If I wanted that level of realism, I'd go play Rainbox Six. No matter.

Maybe it's just a 'demo' issue.

It's entirely possible. I don't judge every little thing on demos anyway; I didn't like the game enough to buy it, with or without a few of my perceived flaws.

It's actually a pretty fun game, a little tongue in cheek in places, obviously... and there's more 'to it' than you might suspect.

I'd say it's definitely worth a rental.

I've read good reviews...then again, everyone likes Pro Evolution Soccer 4 and I don't, so...

I might rent it. If the fancy takes me. I've got a bit of a backlog of games that I should really be playing. Unfortunately, NS is extending its tendrils...
