The Tony Awards; Anyone Watch Them?

The Tony's were pretty good this year. I've just recently got into musicals and things like that, so this was actually the first time I've watched them. The two things I hated about the Tony's was the performance with Hugh and Aretha Franklin; and the fact that the last two award recipients only received about 1 minute to thank everyone, and were cut off with absolutely no warning that it was going to happen, when the people earlier in the Tonys got about 2-3 minutes. In my opinion, the more prestigious the award, the more time you should get...

My favorite moment was when Rev. Al Sharpton came on the stage for the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It was absolutely hilarious! I really think that this musical should have won more than 2 Tonys, but alas, there was a lot of good talent out there. A Light in the Piazza stole the Tonys. I don't know how many awards they won, but they crushed the rest of the competition, especially Spamalot. I didn't particularly think that the performance from Spamalot was amazing. It was mediocre... but the Lady of the Lake is amazing.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
This is probably one of the best musicals I've ever graced my ears with. Just wondering if anyone else out there has had the luck of listening to this musical. The entire concept of a spelling bee as a musical is simply amazing, as well as the originality of it all. This was in development for three years, so they had the time to find the perfect singers to fit each roll.

The Magic Foot guy actually won a Tony last night, while the runner-up in the Spelling Bee was nominated. The runner-up is from Detroit, so it'd be amazing to meet her.

They're performance in the Tony Awards was awesome. They performed the opening song.

The Light in the Piazza
I'm very happy for everyone in this musical. The story is so touching, and just so deep. It's really hard to explain it. They deserved every award that they won, though it was mostly technical stuff.

What did you think of the performances and the awards?

I didn't watch the Tonys, but I did see Guilt (which one best play, best actor, and best actress) and it deserved all of them.

Goodness, I can't believe I forgot about that. Doubt definitely was one of the most successful musicals, award-wise, winning almost everything it was nominated for.

I'm a playwright and I don't watch that.*

It is hard to get into a set of awards for something only one city can watch.

*attitude subject to change upon nomination
