the PIRA and the American patriots? They both were/are fighting for freedom from the oppressive British, both had members do bad things but in the end both were good organizations, ect. What is the difference?

The American patriots wore uniforms and fought as a standing army using standard military tactics of the day. They did not, as a rule, attack civilians, or set off bombs in crowded civilian areas with an eye to causing civilian casualties.

The American patriots also won. The PIRA is an organization of losers. They are represented by people who like to talk a lot, and raise money here in the States by talking a lot in beer halls, then keeping that money for themselves and their fancy haircuts and fine women.

Meanwhile, back in Northern Ireland, the rebels think that putting a wad of explosives under a random car and killing the first handful of people that comes by is heroic stuff, and they laugh about the children killed. That's why they're losing. The few times that they've actually fought with firearms against British troops, they had their asses handed to them.

The American patriots distinguished between civilians and military targets. While they did fight british redcoats, they didn't kill pro-British Americans or burn their homes or anything.

The main difference between patriots and terrorists is that terrorists see everybody who opposes them as their target, while patriots aren't as simplistic. While I don't know much about PIRA, or the IRA for that matter, I generally assume that they are both terrorist groups.

When you talk about blowing up a car that sounds like what the UVF do. And the IRA never laughed about killing kids they issued a public apology unlike the British/loyalists.

2 words. Robert McCartney.

Not only is it probable that IRA 'old boys' killed him but the IRA offered to shoot them. Admittedly it kept the Now Show in IRA jokes but otherwise, possibly the least sensetive bit of PR since GWB talked about crusades.

If the PIRA were men, and actually felt like winners, they would wear uniforms and fight as an army.

If the Americans had fought their Revolutionary War the way the PIRA has, there would be a fancy foppish man in Paris trying to raise money by visiting beer halls and making supercilious remarks about freedom.

Meanwhile, back in the US, his henchmen would be blowing up people at random, mostly his own people. His group would be divided into factions that would be killing each other on a regular basis, when they were not out committing robberies and running gambling, prostitution, and drug smuggling. We would still be under the British thumb, and only occasionally would an actual UK soldier be a casualty.

funny, sounds awfly like the many car bombs the IRA detonated over the years

have you heard of Bloody Friday? or the 1994 bombing of the forensic labs that destroyed a housing estate and forced the closure for some while of the school located in it?

and thats just two examples.

And the IRA never laughed about killing kids they issued a public apology unlike the British/loyalists.
wheres the public apology to the families of the disappeared? Theyve apologiesed for the fact that the families suffered, but not for kidnapping those people. Like Jean McConville, abducted for helping a wounded soldier who was on her doorstep

There's been an awful lot of useless hate over the years, and I would bet that most people who live in N. Ireland just want it all to be over.

I have a great idea.

We can take all the hatemongers (whether they're Catholic or Protestant hatemongers, it doesn't matter) and ship them to Iraq, where they'll be in fine company, and can kill and blow things up to their hearts' content - very far away from the body of sane Irish who have had it with this crap.

We can make sure that IRA Operatives is on the first plane.
