im in a flamey mood recently - things are pretty shite in RL right now. and i don't much like it when people can't just accept something amusing, even if it wasn't expressely their idea (shock horror! )

You do realise that the current economic stability was started and brought about by the Tories before Labour came to power, and that yes ERM screwed the economy, but at least we left it, after all, it was europhiles who wanted us to enter. Plus the economy in 1979 was a damned lot worse than it was in the 90's. What with three day weeks and strikes all the time.

EDIT: Also, does anyone remember the slogans that were around when the French Presidency was a run off between Chirac and Le Pen, was it vote for the crook not the... or something similar.

its an issue for wider debate than this thread i think. the economy of the 1970s was blighted by the two (OPEC) oil crises, and militant trade union action. i think thatcher was right to restrict their power in the climate of the time, but wrong to go as far as she did.
however lets not also forget the boom and bust policies that lead to no less than two distinct economic recessions, the one in 1992 almost spiralling out of control. the first fall in the housing market in roughly 40 years under tory rule at that time. inflation in double figures AND 11 million unemployed... and unemployment is supposed to curb inflation under monetary policy!
Thatcher reduced the progressiveness of the tax system and chronically underfunded public services, the effects of which are still being sorted out today. yes there may have been world economic growth in the period of tory rule, but at what cost?

and i know economic decisions usually have a rough 2 year lag time to take effect, so the stable economy Blair inherited in 1997 was the result of tory action in 95, but the fact is Brown and the Labour Government have managed to keep hold of this steady, sustained positive growth even in the face of world economic slump.

oh and hello, lazy pothead here :p
Wegason
06-06-2005, 16:55
To be honest, the progressive taxation as it was before thatcher was extreme, what with 97%? tax on unearned income and 70%? highest income tax band?

40% is more reasonable. For me, i think it is time we went to a flat tax system, a £12000 threshold so the poor pay minimum tax if any and then 25% on all income above £12000. The Adam Smith institute recommends 23% i believe but i think 25% would be better.

Are you sure it was 11 million unemployed? That's almost a fifth of the population of the UK. I thought it was more like 3 million.
