Taiwan Test fires that can hit Mainland China (http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/ns/news/story.jsp?idq=/ff/story/0001%2F20050605%2F1022983177.htm&sc=1104&ewp=ewp_news_0305china_taiwan&floc=NW_1-T)

As if things aren't hot enough now both sides can wack eachother with missiles.

Kudos for them. I think you have to draw a line in the sand as to what you consider acceptable and what you don't. This is probably in response to the law that China passed 2-3 months ago stating any moves towards formal independence by Taiwan will be confronted with military action. I am also happy that the US has pledged to help Taiwan should China attack.

Kudos? they've escalated a situation which in the result of a relatively small invasion by China, could mean complete destruction of Taiwan's population. Do you think a few missles, a few hundred even, a few thousand even, will stop China?

Good, now if Taiwan can get nukes the human rights abusers in the PRC will think twice before fucking with a free democracy.

This is due to several arms treaties with China, I believe that the US attempted to sell AGEIS Cruisers to Taiwan, but they were stopped because China threatened to invade.

No. What they are doing is preparing to defend their freedom. I would too if I were them because I sure as hell would not want to become a part of a communist regime.

China has shit for a Navy. Their air force isn't much better. What are their soldiers going to do? Swim across the Taiwan Straights? I see a lot of missile exchanges that has a great potential to hurt Taiwan but hopefully Taiwan's new missiles will act as a deterent.

This worries me. I think its good, but come on. Machine guns and dynamite were both designed and the designers thought no human would ever use them against enemies. I don't think it will lead to anything immediatly, but that potential can be very dangerous.

Interesting debate going on here.

This is a smart move by Taiwan. It'll give them a chance to defend their freedoms as someone said earlier.

As to the naval situation of China, they are better than people think they are. I do believe they can land in Taiwan and take them out but they'll have to get through the United States AS WELL AS Japan. I'm sure the Philippines will probably jump in too.

Hopefully it doesn't turn into a shooting war because if it does, we're looking at a brand new War in the Pacific.

This could be a good idea. If Taiwan had missiles capable of destroying their new Three Gorges Dam for example, then the economic costs could be too crippling for China to try and invade. Though I heard that any war could take the form of a Chinese naval blockade. Though I suppose that those firgates could be valuble for that. Also I think they could be sensible to build up a submarine fleet.

The second a soldier got into one of China's troop transports, the American Pacific SSN fleet would show up 15 minutes later for some target practice.

If we were feeling really extravagant and wanted to shoot down some of their airplanes, we could probably send a carrier group over there in rather short notice as well.

One minor problem! We really don't have a carrier group available at this junction in time.

All things considered, we don't really need a carrier group available to sink ships. Our submarines are perfectly capable of that on their own. If planes got involved, I'm pretty sure the higher ups would consider diverting one of the carrier groups at sea at that point in time to Taiwan to (at the least) deter the Chinese from attempting to launch planes.

That's were the planes on Okinawa come into play as well as the bombers on Guam and Saipan. Frankly, I don't think China will launch one. The world's democracies will gang up on China. Well...Maybe not the French. They'll surrender before the 1st shots are fired! LOL
