Taking the law into your own hands

Everybody on earth has been wronged by someone at one point or another. Everybody's thought about revenge. Under what circumstances would you take the law into your own hands if ever? Where would you draw the line on the type of punishment?
I personally would take the law into my own hands if
1 My family/friends were threatened by someone I thought was likely to carry his threat out. The police are usually only helpfull after someone's been beaten/shot/stabbed.
2 A credible threat to my life.
3 If I know someone has raped a woman or child and the law can't/won't get involved for whatever reason. ( I have to be sure. False allegations do exist.)
I would draw the line at torture. If someone needs to die to protect me or my people, so be it. I won't tie him up and make him scream for days though.

I wish I had taken the law into my own hands and killed my biological father; I never stood up to him, and he died of cancer at 38. I will always hate him, and now I'll never be able to let go of it. I was 8 at the time, but I still wish I had done something.
I wish I had taken the law into my own hands and killed the kid who sexually harrassed me when I was 5. Perhaps then I would be able to rest easy knowing that he would never repeat that behavior with anyone ever again.
Obviously, I feel that there are many times when it would not cross the line to take the law into one's own hands. I am a potential vigilante just looking for an excuse. I only hope those who offend me by their very existance have the sense to tread lightly around me-there's no telling when I might explode.

I would prefer to avoid it wherever possible, but if I really thought it was necessary, I would "take the law into my own hands". I wouldn't torture anybody - I wouldn't be "punishing" as such, merely removing a threat.

I considered killing my father a number of times... but being the person I am I rather tried to kill myself. Failed though.
My father is still alive and frankly, I don't care. I haven't seen him nor spoken to him in ten years now, so it makes little difference to me if he's alive or dead.
I would never ever kill another person, sorry, I know I can't do that. I might think of other forms of punishment, though.
