I'm a little bit over halfway through the book. I'm at Book IV, about 30 pages until Book V.
I'm curious to know, how close is the movie to the book? Is it better? Worse? Is it worth getting after I finish this book?
And I know that the movies are split in 3. Is this the book split into thirds, or added on portions?

You don't want spoilers. All I can say is the book is much better. And the movies are not the book 'just split into three'. Indeed the movies add bits (the third one entirely) that just aren't in the book. Meanwhile, as usual, they miss all the really good bits out - the nuance of the characters &c.
Good movies don't make good books, and vice versa.
However, the first two movies aren't bad. And well worth watching. Just if you have read the books, they are a little lacking.
That said, it's a fucking awesome book. And if you like it, I recommend that you should read the Last Don, also by Puzo.
